So, sure, Kithkin's were M:tG's version of Halflings (which are an alternate version of hobbits).
I was watching National Lampoons "Christmas Vacation" ("NLCV"). Clark W. Griswold, at the 8:45 minute mark mentions something about spending quality Holiday time with Kith and Kin.
Now, outside of the game, this is the ONLY time I have heard "Kithkin" used.
I am guessing that the original Amrou Kithkin is homage to the movie "NLCV."
"Kith and kin" is archaic slang for "friends and family". The National Lampoon guys did not invent the words. Kin still sees a bit of usage, kith has fallen out of sight though.

"kith" comes from Middle English, meaning one's friends and acquaintances.
"kin" comes from Middle English, meaning one's family. (See also: "kindred")
Also, in Tolkien's work, "halfling" and "hobbit" were synonymous. "Hobbit" is trademarked by the Tolkien estate, while "halfling" is not, hence the usage of "halfling" in other fiction.

Does this sound accurate?

One of the more common uses today is when you list your 'next of kin' on various forms and such.
But yeah, that's most likely where they got the name from.
