Returning player here, played magic in the mid 90's with basically a collection of cards given to me... Now returning with virtually nothing. Back then seemed like nothing now, no judges in our casual games , no tourn or FNM... Heck the nearest card shop was out local grocery store with a few boosters or something. I think magic to my parents seemed like some form of witchcraft, lol.
This is not trying to be a thread of what deck should I build or what should I buy or net decking vs rogue. I just merely want opinions about starting this hobby, and gaining the most learning and overall rewarding experience.
To me: learning is falling down and trying again, and success is measured by both talent and effort, w/ some luck.
I recently went to the store to buy a deck builders toolkit, and made mono 30 card decks and just sparred against myself trying to learn the new mechanics and rules, mainly why I browse this forum.
I toyed with the idea of going to local FNM and looked at net decking , buying singles , or even buying an event deck. But in a way I would rather just build a standard deck with what little selection I have , even with 3-4 colors and just play. Then from there learn , have a budget , buy boosters now and then and try new things and improve gradually. I know I'm going to lose badly and often, even may be criticized badly. But somehow i feel this is where and how the best players started out at one time.
By all means do what your thinking about. Tell people that your just comming back to the game and have nothing. They still will likely slaughter you but a lot of people will take the time and explain the rules/mechanics to you. Some will likely even give you some extra cards (usually commons and uncommons)
If you have some extra money and free time this weekend. Go to the avacyn restored prerelease. Most cost about $25 us and you get six packs of the new set plus a promo card. You'll have to build a deck out of those six packs (ask around someone may help you) and basic lands provided by the store

This game is great, and popularity is at an all-time high. There are so many ways to play outside of just the tournament formats, and event then there are tons of tournament formats. You'll not bore too easily, and when you do you can always pick it up again in 6 months or whatever.
If you aren't looking to do tournaments, check out the casual section. Otherwise we also have Standard, Legacy, Limited, ect. forums. We also have forums dedicated to variant formats like Cube and EDH.

I did the same thing, though I had to drive 38 miles one way to buy boosters (no joke). I came back to the game in Ravnica having "left" during Ice Age.
A lot has changed, so be sure to ask questions if you don't know what's going on or how something works. The rules forum here is a great resource. I used the Search function to a great extent when I started playing at FNM events.
If you're just looking for a deck just to get playiing, the event decks are not horrible. I saw a guy go 2-2 with one a few weeks ago.
