I've gone to a handful of sealed and draft events and done average, so I have a small stack of cards, but nothing to really put together a deck that doesn't suck without a lot of trading or buying. And trading isn't too much of an option since, like I said, I have a small number of rares and even fewer $2+ rares.
So an event deck seems like a good place to start. I have a enough cards I think to modify one of them a little, but I don't know if they're worthwhile or a rip off.
So, is getting one a good idea as a place to start, or are they waste of money and I should just buy singles?
It comes with the cards you need, and then you can trade up or buy whatever you need to "complete" the Event Deck. I think the Birthing Pod one is a really good investment right now, because, even though you have to replace a few things, Birthing Pod runs a lot of one-ofs.

Event decks are great even from a value perspective. You almost always get more than what you pay for in singles. I remember getting the War of Attrition event deck just to finish up my playset of Stoneforge Mystic + get other good cards like Mirran Crusader.
My only gripe is that Event deck cards are printed differently, but that isn't a major problem.

I think the event decks are great if you can get them at the right price. I bought the new phyrexia ones as well as the vampire m12 ones. I did not play as is but took piece out of those decks to use.

With minimal investment, the Hold the Line event deck can be very competitive. Both of the Dark Ascension decks look like they wouldn't embarrass you either. My first deck on returning to Magic after a decade layoff was a modded Hold the Line deck. I won a FNM with it (not the first time out, but still).

What would be a good price for them?
It looks like Hold the Line is very popular and can't be gotten cheaply anywhere I've found, and the LGS around me don't have any in stock. Starcitygames has the Event Deck dual pack for for $40, which might not be too bad since it would at least give me a Birds of Paradise, Green Sun's Zenith, and Ratchet Bomb as things that I might actually be able to trade from the other deck.
The only event deck that seems not-so-good is the goblin DA deck. Doesn't look too horrible, but just in comparison to the other 3 decks, not as good. I would take that one and just turn it into Goblins, and the deck doesn't come with any rare goblins.
So I think the Event Deck dual pack is the way to go, unless the Birthing Pod deck is a lot stronger. I really don't have much experience with it, but I think I get the general idea, especially with undying.
They are a good way to get started, they are not a good thing to buy if you want an actual serious deck. They are decent enough, but they are far from competitive or tuned. They are great to have and modify if you are a new player though.
I actually won a standard tournament with a near copy of the green infect deck before it was released. It certainly has some weaknesses, but it can jump up and bite an unprepared meta in the ass.
The Deathfed deck from Innistrad is actually pretty fun, but you have to add a couple key cards from Dark Ascension that weren't available yet (Tracker's Instincts, Ghoultree, for example), fill up to the maximum number of copies of Splinterfright, and jam in as many Birds of Paradise/Hinterland Harbors as you can find to get something fairly playable.
I'm just wondering: Do these thing's price go down once their set has rotated? I'm thinking of making Illusion tribal once they rotate out, so if I can pick up the event decks for cheap that would be amazing.

Just placed my order for the Dual pack of Event Decks (Hold the Line + Deathfed) for $40, so we'll see how it goes. I like Green/Blue combination, and I'll trade from there. Though the white aggro looks like it's gonna be brutal with all the angels in AVR.
I've bought the event decks when I don't feel like getting something together for FNM, and they usually fare pretty well.
Granted, my local play scene is a bit more relaxed than it probably should be, so maybe the event decks do better here in my part of Hawaii than they would in other places.
