Golden Lotus (and to a lesser extent Enrage and the Rack) brought to mind the idea of building up a "collection" of inaccurately spoiled cards (like the 4/3 Giant Solifuge) and fake cards that were accepted for a time (like Golden Lotus)
So, what are some of the Rumor Mill's busts, both in this and previous spoiler seasons?
Moonlight Bargain was first spoiled at 2BB and people were expecting it to be played everywhere to the point of going on ebay for a bit; then it got changed to 3BB and everyone lost interest.
Let's see, I think Predatory Advantage originally only cost like, 3-4 and seems like it was at the end of each turn. I could be wrong. I just remember it being a lot better when it was first spoiled.
Also, Eyes of the Wisent was "whenever a player plays A spell" not "a BLUE spell", I think.
It was a real shame with Wreak Havoc; that card had so much potential and power if it had just costed 3. At 3 mana it would have been absolutely amazing with 4 Stone Rains, 4 Birds, 4 Llanowar Elves, and 4 Rumbling Slums. That extra mana made all the difference in taking Wreak Havoc completely out of constructed
What makes me smile about Giant Solifuge was that there were people that thought the card wasn't any good as a 4/3- and then they spent eons of time raving about how crappy it was when it turned out to be a 4/1.
I'm pretty sure we'd all have nightmares of it had it been a 4/3...

I agree 100%. Solifuge at 4/3 would have been FAR too overwhelming. He would have utterly dominated T2 as his beefy body would crush almost every creature in combat, and trampling through chump blocks.
Shroud would have been the worst part though. Since many decks loaded up on tons of cheap and efficient removal like Putrefy, Mortify, and Faith's Fetters, Solifuge makes all those cards essentially blank. Your only real out against him is something with 3 power and enough toughness to not get burned out, or Wrath. Yeah, I'm glad Solifuge wasn't a 4/3. It's still a good card as a 4/1 though. The triple combo of haste, trample, and shroud is too good with the 4 power.
Solifuge was never spoiled as 4/3 - common misconception. Someone posted a bad scan, and everybody made their mind up. Some thought 4/2, some thought 4/1, some thought 4/3. I think someone even suggested 4/8
But no, it was never spoiled wrong, there was just a crappy scan.
The fake "power nine" scan from 9th edition. I think that's the thread with most replies in the entire forum lol. People thought cards like Mox Diamond and Cataclysm were getting reprinted.
When the shieldmage didn't say "artifact" and just prevented all damage to creatures. Or was it just all damage period. But either way, a lot better before corrected.

IIRC Spectral Lynx had a snafu as well. Can anyone confirm?
I remember that, but it was minor and the card still saw plenty of sales.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
Throat Wolf (scroll down to the name here ) it was probably the oldest fake rumour in Magic, and got spread over Usenet pretty quick.
After Apocalypse came out, people started speculating heavily about Ody block being a hardcore return to mono color land. Among the rumours was a fake Armageddon and a reprint of Price of Progress. The reprint turned out to be a pretty crappy attempt ( Price of Glory )
Blowback spells that were supposed to be coming out in Mirrodin block and work like Chain Lightning
@Ideas Unbound: at the time it was supposed to be a rare, and people won playsets at auction for over $40 and had to pay that...for a common

After a few posts it was confirmed to be 2G and everyone went from "Wow!" to "It sucks!".
I still made a casual deck for it though.
Brings back lots of memories.
/ MTGNews probably has some too

Wasn't that spoiled wrongly with wording like, 'whenever an opponent plays a spell (not just blue spells) during your turn, put a 4/4 into play'.
edit: and of course someone beat me to it
