The closest we have to an idea of what's next is Phyrexia. Other than that there are some loose threads that could be tugged. Emrakul is just in the moon but not gone, and Sorin or Nahiri may start up trouble possibly. Ugin also hints at the importance of the Eldrazi so they could tie in some drama there. They could also have some sort of new villain who hasn't even been mentioned. Outside of the Phyrexians/Eldrazi some sort of evil Planeswalker group seems the most sensible, there are certainly enough to justify it. But it's kind of hard to tell.
My best guess is the next couple blocks will be kind of unwinding blocks to then get us to whatever is in the future. As well I could see someone like Aminatou given they're bringing in side Planeswalkers could be someone of note. Garruk is also supposed to have a role in doing something.
Personally I'm hoping we get an expansion on the Entities and the Wielders( Their walkers ?) that have been hinted to be coming for Davriel.
They're interplanar (seemingly) and can easily be slotted into various settings, could lead to an eventual return for Tacenda and it gives us more screentime for Davriel which is by far the biggest bonus.
After Bolas, Karn intends to take on New Phyrexia. And Tezzeret has an interplanar bridge, which he could use to transport Phyrexians. Hmm...but since we'll have just got done with an interplanar army invasion, I hope the story takes a breather for a while and focuses more on small, personal arcs. The next plane's going to be new, but I wouldn't mind a "homecoming" arc depicting our Gatewatchers simply checking up on friends and family, and maybe dealing with more domestic threats.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

A set based on rebuilding a plane (such as a return to Zendikar or Amonkhet) would be much more interesting to me than another "The world is in grave peril" story. If every story is a high stakes the world will end story, then they start to get boring and stale after a while. Which is one of the reasons I enjoyed Ixalan so much, it felt more like an adventure, the world wasn't in peril, and everyone was looking for the ultimate treasure.
I also miss the sets of old, where the focus was on a conflict, but the world was not really in danger. Such as the Mirage War. A good old fashioned adventure or smaller scale conflict would be quite enjoyable as the backdrop for a set or fifteen.

It's about time for the reserved list to die, for the sake of Vintage and Legacy (And Commander).
That said, I think we are going to get something new, after a small breather.
I feel Marit Lage has basically reached joke status like Tibalt.
Nah, Marit Lage is the OG named Eldritch horror of MTG, the Eldrazi are ursurpers. And she is still the largest creature in black border MTG, coming in at a whopping 20/20

That is mechanical, not community perception related. Rise of the Eldrazi, Battle for Zendikar, Gatewatch, Shadows Over Innistrad, and Eldritch Moon were all times when the speculation was about the possibility of Marit Lage. Its like that joke from that show House with Dr House saying "Its never Lupus", replace "Lupus" with "Marit Lage". Even this time around with War for the Spark there has been rampant discussion about the identity of The Wanderer like if they are Ugin, Emrakul, Elspeth, Mu Yanling, even Marit Lage, or just someone entirely new we never met before.
Essentially Marit Lage is just an untapped storyline they could tap into but don't and opt for anything else even if Marit Lage would make more sense.

All the original speculation that turned out to be the Eldrazi was because at the time, the only Eldritch Abomination we knew of was Marit Lage. Whom is a creature that could not be killed even by old walkers. At all. The Eldrazi, as we have learned, not only could be killed by oldwalkers, they could be killed by Neowalkers (except possibly Emmy). As for the Wanderer, that's just silly, it can't be Ugin or Mu Yanling because her spark works differently from the others, and it can't be Emmy or Marit Lage because it is a planeswalker, and it can't be Elspeth, because she is DEAD and in the Therosian Underworld. So those people are just being silly.
We know very little about Marit Lage except that she is immensely powerful to the level that she couldn't be killed by Oldwalkers, that she like the Eldrazi are capable of traversing the blind eternities without being a planeswalker, that she can be trapped by relatively mundane means (such as by being encased in ice), that she most definitely is not an Eldrazi, and that by the end of Coldsnap she was no longer imprisoned in the Ronom Glacier. Also, unlike the Eldrazi, she is colored and not colorless.
She, like a handful of other MTG villains such as Baron Sengir, is an immensely cool character that is sadly underused.

Honestly, it's going to involve the Weatherlight II to some extent, particularly if Karn becomes a fixture in the crew going forward. It's too soon to omit it especially after introducing new cast members (Raff, Arvad et al) and having a rather prolific secondary character being thrust into a primary role (Jhoira) to the community right before a big finale of a long arc like the Gatewatch one.
My bets are on the pursuits of the Weatherlight II crew in some capacity.

We know the next plane we're visiting in the fall is a brand new plane. My bet is that whatever plane we see will get invaded by Phyrexia, kicking off a Phyrexian storyline that can tie in NPH, Elspeth's Homeworld, Theros (to rescue Elspeth from the Underworld), Dominaria, etc.

WeatherlightII is incapable of moving between planes though, and we know the fall set takes place on a brand new plane.

I think I have picked up in random conversations/online discussions about a return to Lorwyn. Going back to classic tribal themes will feel refreshing, in my perspective. Maybe they could have some story arc around the lesser built tribes in Lorwyn, like Assassin, Archer, Druid, Cleric, etc... I know each of those lesser tribes have a color identity so build arounds can happen, as well as color bleed.
You know who does have a working plane hopping skyship post-mending that could safely transport people but never got a chance to be used? Venser. Its probably a good thing Tezzeret and Bolas were unaware of this technology otherwise they wouldn't have to go with the planar gate which is technically inferior technology.

A return to Lorwyn/Shadowmoor is unlikely. The block was not a success (Partially because the Kithkin of the plane took a nosedive into the uncanny valley, partially because Faeries were degenerate).

that's a shame. in those blocks the art was enchanting and the cards were interesting. I could really use a break from repeatedly seeing the same few characters dominate the art and a human-less plane would really help that happen.
ps, I didn't think the kithkin looked bad in particular.

The Lorwyn/Shadowmoor Kithkin were horrendous. Had they looked like the Dominaria ones people probably wouldn't have had an issue with them. It didn't help that short of one legendary card, all of them were bad.
Faeries were just overpowered from the get-go, while the rest of the tribes were mostly underpowered.

I think theres a huuuuge reason we didnt see Garruk in WAR. We're going to be seeing him soon and often after this set. Also the Phyrexians are ripe for reintroduction. Maybe a year or so away since we just did a huge artifact based set with Kaladesh. I could also see some story development around Aminatou.

Remember, different groups of phyrexians exist on different planes, such as Elspeth's home plane, and yes, even on Dominaria. We need not go back to New Phyrexia for them to return as a threat.
As for New Phyrexia itself, the reason they could take over as fast as they did (only a few hundred years after the creation of the plane), is because the entire plane was made of metal, giving them ample ground to spread. They'd be much less of a direct threat on a plane with more dirt and rock.

Faeries were the best, yes, but every other tribe was tier 2. There is a reason that Thoughtweft Trio in its hayday commanded a $15 price tag.
