How about because they don't want to reprint Blood Moon in standard set releases? Its like asking why they ever made Burning Earth a card when they could have just reprinted Manabarbs.
They don't always want super strong modern cards in standard. There are also validly sometimes reasons to have a variant of a card. In modern Blood Sun would disable fetchlands where as Blood Moon would turn them into mountains. It is not the same card and it is not intended to be the same card.

I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.
Why would they make something strictly worse than blood moon in a standard set?
Maybe they are printing something like this to ban blood moon in modern perhaps?
So they can use this replacement?
Do you know what "Strictly Worse" means? Because Blood Sun is on a completely different scale than Blood Moon is. They can't be compared with those terms.
Blood Sun draws a card. Blood Moon does not.
Blood Sun makes Fetchlands (and several others) completely blank, whereas Blood Moon turns them into Mountains.
Blood Sun does not disable certain of your own lands' abilities, like Grove of the Burnwillows, which can be used to return Punishing Fire under the Sun but not the Moon.
The two cards look comparable, but they're really not. And banning Blood Moon without providing something that can handle Tron as well seems like an immensely bad idea.

Moon makes the unfair decks more reasonable. I dont think they could ban it with a straight face without also hitting one of the tron lands and E temple. So no, I dont think we have to worry about a Moon ban any time soon. Arguably this could be leaning more towards Frontier where moon would be absent but fetchlands are present.

Let's not forget that they also just reprinted Blood Moon in Modern Masters, which is all but a seal of approval from Wizards that the card is appropriate for the format.
While I disagree that a similar card being printed has any bearing any cards being banned, being printed in Modern Masters does not guarantee it is safe either. They printed Splinter Twin in MM15 and then banned it 6 months later.
Blood Sun is much closer to Tsabo's Web than Blood Moon if you ask me. It doesn't fill a void that Blood Moon would leave just because it has Blood in the name.
It is also possible that they're printing a safety valve for a future set. Maybe there will be a new cycle of manlands in the near future. It could also be a way to deal with ramunap ruins, ixalan transform lands, etc......

That's ridiculous. Wizards doesn't ban hate in Modern unless it has serious problems, such as Punishing Fire's reusability and Mental Misstep mostly being used to counter itself. Blood Moon is a fair card that in that it is strongest against the format's greediest manabases and harmless against others. I mean, what would their actual reasoning for the ban be? That the best decks aren't good enough? Splinter Twin, for all the hubbub about the combo "policing" the format, at least actually held the status of being one of the format's greatest threats as well.
The only way I see Wizard banning Blood moon is if they change the deck building rules to limits the total number of non-basic lands you can put in a 60 cards deck e.g. "you cannot have more non-basic lands than basic lands in your deck".
