Depending on how successful Explore is, Wizards may expand it to have one for several other card types. Recruit a creature. Invent an artifact. Weave an enchantment. Research a Sorcery/Instant. Encounter a Planeswalker.
Explore works best, IMO, because every* deck is approximately 30-40% land, so you've always got a solid chance of hitting the card despite deck composition. Lands are also frequently worth less than other cards, so it makes the card advantage mode on it less oppressive.
*: There's obvious exceptions like Oops all Spells, Manaless Dredge, Belcher, 10-land Stompy, etc, but none of those decks are even going to look at these cards so that's irrelevant.

What you're talking about really only applies to Modern and Legacy.
There could easily be Standard environments where other card types could make up a similarly high percentage of a deck.
This is almost always true of Creatures, and it could easily be true of Artifacts, as well.
Enchantments, Instants, and Sorceries are a bit trickier, but still possible.
Planeswalkers are probably too "rare" for that to be worthwhile.

We could feasibly see 24+-creature or instant/sorcery decks, we have before. But they're extremely few and far between, and it makes the mechanic considerably swingier. I can't see them wanting to print 10+ cards in one set with Instant/sorcery "Explore"

I could see the Simic getting a creature-exploring mechanic called Study. "When Simic Biologist enters the battlefield, it studies. (Reveal the top card of your library. Put that card into your hand if it's a creature. Otherwise, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature, then put the card back on top or into your graveyard.)" You get either more creatures or bigger creatures. Either way, it's win-win for Simic.
Alternatively, Study can be modular like AntiPox suggested, though rather than choosing the card type, the card type is applied as a suffix much like with protection. Creatures can study artifacts, creatures, enchantments, instants, sorceries, land (yes, functionally identical to explore, but still acceptable as a subset), and even subtypes. Imagine a white Artificer that studies Equipment, or a green Druid that studies Auras. A red Goblin that studies Goblins? RDW would love a cheap red Wizard that studies instants or sorceries.
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
