Mark Rosewater let this tidbit loose: Baseball Bat is the playtest name for one of the cards in Baseball and it's a pun. This seems to indicate it's a literal Bat creature that was placed in Baseball, and that the creature type is therefore important to the design somehow. Does this mean that the set is on Innistrad and the card is another Bat-to-Vampire transform like Screeching Bat? Any alternative theories? Or is this not actually a significant hint at all?
I'll bet it'll be an equipment granting super haste. And if anyone understands the pun in that sentence, I'm impressed.

The creature type doesn't need to carry much significance. It's just as likely that they just designed a small black flier, bat is likely their default creature type for small black fliers so they made it a bat, and then discovered that "baseball bat" was a punny name for it.
