Core Sets have been eliminated because they were trying to be all things to all players and failing. They were also a hodgepodge creatively and had no compelling lore or story. So without Core Sets the only entry-level product is Intro Decks. Is this a good way to bring in new players? Isn't one thing WotC would like all players, old and new, to do draft?
So here's my idea. Annual sets of 250-275 cards that function like Portal sets(simple enough to learn, fun enough to actually play with) with an ongoing story, set on a new plane and completely removed from all the rest of the MTG continuity and goings on. The plane would ideally be like Dominaria(low-fantasy and high-fantasy mixed, with many different continents to accommodate many different races and more story possibilities) and incorporate all of the iconic creature types.
These new "Portal" sets would ideally be allowed in constructed formats so they're not worthless once new players become ongoing players, and they would allow for a new creative outlet for the MTG team(who IMO seems beholden to returning planes and writing stories that don't rock any boats so as to avoid preventing future returns to popular planes).
I stand by the belief that entry-level products will be precons outfitted with a selection of creatures and sorceries that represent each color's basic toolbox.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

Thoughts? Wholly unlikely? Completely untenable?
