I was looking at today's "Announcing..." article. I was trying to figure out what it might represent, perhaps a two-spired tower, in contrast to RAV's single-towered exp symbol. But no, it lacks the detail for that...
Then something I've been hearing over the weekend keeps ringing in my ears...
"Horns of Bolas..."
Go look at the expansion symbol again. Now look at Pools of Becoming.
Now look at the expansion symbol again. Tell me that doesn't look like a stylised version of the Horns of Bolas?
Now I like Bolas well enough, but I'm no fanboy. I could care less if he comes back now or later down the line. But that symbol, I really can't think of anything else at this point that it could represent.
What do you all think? Will Bolas' presence be felt on Ravnica? Duel Decks: Infinite Consortium vs Nicol Bolas?
Or do you have a better idea of what the symbol represents? Some sort of pincer? Revenge of the Homarid's?
The empty space in the middle made me think it represented a void in Ravnica after all the destruction/killing spree that the block ended with. The Bolas theory is interesting though, and he seems like a pretty cool villain, so I'm not complaining.
The Horns of Bolas thing had more to do with the fact that Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker will be in Magic 2013.
The symbol looks to me like the squashed together tip of a fountain pen.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe "The Horns of Bolas thing" floating about is regarding Duels 2013, the video game, not the Magic 2013 core set.
Duels 2013 will be the current iteration of DotP throughout the RTR block, so perhaps there's a connection there?
Edit: Though the Fountain Pen thing also struck me. RTR's tagline: "The Pen is mightier than the Spell!"
The promo that showed Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker said it was fore core set 2013.
I was also under the impression it was the original Rav symbol with the "void" in it - perhaps to signify that the guilds as we knew them no longer exist, but the Bolas connection is interesting as well. After all, he founded the Consortium, and it is based in Ravnica.
I'd have to doublecheck the artwork, but the set symbol made me think of Azorius for some reason. Not the guild symbol, something else.
It could also just be like Ravnica: City of Guilds' expansion, which was a city spire. (And remember, what was the set symbol of Guildpact and Dissension supposed to be?)

Guildpact's expansion symbol was of... The Guildpact.
Dissension's expansion symbol was the broken Guildpact.
I think the RTR symbol is just a take on the single spire of the original Ravnica. Showing how the cityplane has changed since we've last seen it.

I'm definitely getting a Bolas vibe out of that set symbol. This is looking more and more like the year of Bolas. I wonder how Nicol Bolas will be tied into the conclusion of Innistrad/AVR.

On the other hand, core sets don't really have a "storyline" to speak of. It would stand to reason in this age of planeswalkers taking center stage at all times that the RtR storyline may very well focus on the Infinite Consortium and the drama around it. Jace and Niv Mizzet vs. Tezzeret and Nicol Bolas would be one hell of a tag-team match to build up to.

Good god I would hate that. My favourite nonwalker and least favourite Bradywalker vs. My favourite Bradywalker and the Multiverse's oldest Mary Sue.
I wouldn't know which team to cheer for.
