Since the new Atraxa revealed the existence of them, it's time to make a thread just for speculating about what it is they actually are.
Some guesses to get the ball rolling:
-Some kind of variant of the unreleased War of the Spark Skirmish mechanic which had players compete to advance on a little mini game board for rewards
Makes a lot of sense with the name. Could be distinct enough to warrant a new cardtype. Was originally an outside the game token more like dungeons but maybe WotC decided they played better as playable cards.
-A variant on the Quest mechanic that has been tried in og Zendikar and Eldraine design, complete multiple different conditions for reward
Calling them Battles would be a different spin on this but it would make some sense for them to be a new cardtype to make them not too easy to destroy in the same way previous design attempts made them enchantments with hexproof. I could see the conditions for this being like objectives in a battle. Arguably less flavourful than the skirmish idea but has the advantage of not sometimes being punished by your opponent fighting you on it.
-Cards that change the gamestate in unnusual ways, like, for instance, the unreleased Stygian mechanic from TBD that splits creatures into lanes
I don't know how many cards you could make like this but it's an area they've tried before that could make sense as warranting a new cardtype. Perhaps bonus effects layered on top for different battle cards.
I will say something that caught my eye on Reddit but it’s tin foil level
what a player caught attention on is on this card from “ONE”
the comes in when you read the part that saids
The next time target would deal combat damage to one or more players
how’s that possible of one creature dealing combat damage more than one player at once during combat it’s not extra combat and Hydra Omnivore abilities don’t work with this.
The damage dealt by Hydra Omnivore as a result of its triggered ability is not combat damage (and doesn’t cause the ability to trigger again).
and another one that’s weird to me is this
for me it’s that
During any turn you attacked with a token,
now I’m assuming it’s during any of my other turns but why word it like that? Couldn't of they just clarify “of your turns” after the “any” part.
“Battle” could have something to do with changing combat damage and works
we already know those praetor pictures don't exist anyway and upping the counters involves dealing combat damage and you get benefits for a higher count
It's just a dungeon but for two players. This is really obvious. You draw it and play it for a cost, and try to "progress" on the "quest" like in ffg games. Other players can progress as well. Whoever wins it wins a prize.

To be honest, I'm more interested from Atraxa, Grand Unifier's reminder text in the fact that they're FINALLY gonna make tribal into the supertype it always should have been. The decision to make it a type was absolutely ridiculous and made no sense. Nevertheless, tribal is great as a supertype, and should reappear.
The consensus is that the wording on Atraxa is open ended meaning that "these are card types but there could be (are) more". So I don't think tribal is necessarily changing.
we already know those praetor pictures don't exist anyway and upping the counters involves dealing combat damage and you get benefits for a higher count
so Maybe this is a test pilot of the battle type
Could the artworks of these maybe belong to praetor 3.0 cards? We know there are 5 commander decks coming for MoM and the set symbol has norns headpiece on it. So maybe 5 praetor decks?

Those are likely the praetor avatars for Arena. The ONE battlepass will unlock praetor portraits as avatars. They then just used the asset for other purposes as well, like this one.
I think Phyrexian tribal is a lot more doable in MOM because there will be a lot less Phyrexian in comparison to ONE. He already mentioned that the mana cost for the tribal cards would have been higher than normal in ONE because of the quantity of Phyrexian in the set. For example something like "Other Phyrexian creatures you control get +1/+1." would have been the same as "Other creatures you control get +1/+1.".
We saw all those legendaries from different planes in the package artwork... I am sure they will eat up a lot of space. It seems that they will introduce a new permanent type. Maybe some support for the new card type, too. And we will be in multiple planes for the set which need to be reflected in the card artwork. This happens mostly with lands but often they use other cards for this, too. I think we will get another set of planeswalkers. It just seems strange to not include most of them, taking into account that all the worlds are involved. So maybe another 10 (maybe again 5 compleated and 5 normal ones but this time rarity switched the non-completed are the mythics and the compleated rares).

Ok that is like guaranteed a “that’s almost a confession” moment that phyrexian tribal is in Mom
So we will see if some of the new “battle” cards include phyrexian tribal stuff. (Most won’t)
