So I've been thinking...it's been a while since we've heard anything about New Phyrexia/Mirrodin, or had and artifact set.
The story:
Mirrodin Reforged
Mirrodin is all but completely controlled by the preators. The triumvirate of Elesh Norn, Jin Gitaxis and Sheoldred now turn their attention to the invasion of other planes. They enlist Tezzeret to build a new interplanar portal to advance their plans.
However, resistance remains. striking from hidden places, they await the return of their plane's creator, karn.
The Factions
Orthodoxy: WUB Led by Elesh Norn, this represents mainstream Phyrexia. they prefer a slow, attrition based style of combat, having acess to vast resources.
mechanics:
Phy mana: . there'e still a lot of room for this idea to get expanded on. some things might even have abilities that trigger upon paying life.
Infect: this could come back too, but without proliferate to make it so fast. poison is an iconic Phyrexian mechanic, and it'd be cool to see it in, punch out -1/-1 and poison counters are included, similar to ikoria.
Proflierate: we saw it too recently for a return.
Rebels RWU: these folks are artifact masteers. they have access to a lot of tools, but can't fight an all out war with Phyrexia, instead relying on subterfuge and surveillance.
Mecahnics:
Power up( a new mechanic): when you power up, choose one: equip an equipment, or crew a vehicle.
Improvise: these folks are really good with artifacts.
Rogue Phyrexians RG: These two Praetors don't care about the way Phyrexia went, and are somewhat sympathetic to the rebels.
mechanics:
artifact sacrifice
+1/+1 counters
Planeswalkers:
A fully Pheyrexianized Tezzeret. he has a +1 that gives a poison counter. has a -3 to return an infect creature to play. has no ultimate, but a passive- whenever you pay life, put a loyalty counter on him.
Karn, Creator of Mirrodin: back as a mythic rare. he has solid, artifact based abilites.
Melira, Mirran Healer: sort of an anti tezzeret. has a +1 that removes counter from a permanent/player, and a -3 that returns a card (like eternal witness). ultimate-double your life total.
other mythic rares:
Praetors: These are all colored artifact creatures this time around, with phy mana in their costs. Think of them sort of like the Mirrodin version of Gods. they have the following characteristics:
phy mana: all have at least 2 phy mana in their cost.
etb ability and a passive ability
upon death or exile, return to hand.
swords cycle: a few more of the allied swords are present at mythic rare.
well that's all the musing for now, would you like to see this set come to compleation? (sic.)
Eventually we will go back. Phyrexians are too big not to revisit. For the plot, I had this general idea:
Karn, Ajani, and Elspeth get together and formulate a plan to help the Mirrans. The plan is: find and capture Tezzeret, modify his Planar Bridge to be able to safely transport living things, and evacuate Mirran refugees from New Phyrexia. Ultimately, with Koth's help, they succeed. However, Tezzeret escapes with the modified Planar Bridge. Because of this, Tezzeret can now effectively hold the multiverse at gunpoint by threatening a Phyrexian invasion on any plane, making him extremely powerful.
As for mechanics, bringing back Phyrexian mana could work, but only if it's used for generic costs imo. That way, instead of a way to cheat the color pie, it becomes a way to play more aggressively. I'd also love to see Living weapon return, especially if they make more use of colored artifacts.
Idk when exactly we will see this happen, but if Ashiok's involvement in Theros: Beyond Death was any indication, they're building up to it.
They had a complete set planned out for a mirrodin reborn where the phyrexian lost. They didn't print it because the story line was better dark. I can't remember what that set was called. Old leaked photos had booster box images and boosters. It's been years and years. They will go back they have the story already built. It's somewhere in the bowels of mtg salvation and the internet.
I found it. https://mtg.gamepedia.com/Mirrodin_Pure
No they didn't, it was a fake set they made to keep the mystery of who won between Mirrodin and Phyrexia. The storyline had been locked since the original mirrodin had been set up to be where Phyrexia would be reborn. All Mirrodin Reforged was a red herring.

“There are no weak Jews. I am descended from those who wrestle angels and kill giants. We were chosen by God. You were chosen by a pathetic little man who can't seem to grow a full mustache"
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
Mirrodin is dead. The Phyrexians took it all the way over and now with all five colors of mana at their disposal, god only knows what they've been up to over the last decade. New Phyrexia is certainly not a place we will see as a world in all its own - if anything we can expect it to show up like Phyrexia once did when Volrath tried to overlay Rath on Dominaria as a gateway or staging area for the Phyrexians to invade Dominaria.
As 5colors noted, Mirrodin Pure was a marketing gimmick. WOTC wanted us to be unsure of how the story would end, so the third set of the block was billed as New Phyrexia OR Mirrodin Pure. Mirrodin Pure was never made outside of a couple promo cards (One signet I think) that were tossed around. For those of you who remember, the whole set was leaked online before the official previews got underway, so some of the marketing was lost.
MARO and one or two other folks at WOTC have mentioned in the past that the Phyrexians are still out there and will be making a return as a villain in a future story sometime, but they wanted to give the Eldrazi and Nicol Bolas some time to shine as well as create some new boogeymen for us to duel with.
Most promising though was the flavor text and art for Fountain of Ichor in Modern Horizons. Ixalan is most certainly not prepared to fight off the Phyrexians without help and Phyrexian dinosaurs are bound to happen if that card was in fact an easter egg for future story developments (which I most certainly believe it is). While the mechanics and cards will be hard to predict, I imagine the Ichor getting into some Dinosaurs and maybe pirates, forcing the Vampires of the plane to call for help and step up to defend it. Huatli, Jace, and Vraska, (especially Huatli) will likely discover the invasion a little too late and have to make an interplanar call for help- what that will look like is anyone's guess, but the Phyrexians taking over another plane would be a huge issue for the multiverse for sure. It would have to evolve into a multiverse-wide event to stave these 'rexians off.

Well that makes me very sad. But maybe ixalan will develop into some kind of tech world then. Can you show me where Ms. Luhr said this? I am genuinely curious.
But this is probably still a teaser for the phyrexians return though just not ixalan
Also core 2021 will probably have lore on the old phyrexians
(it's teferi focused and all the lore before the return to dominaria set pretty much him fighting the phyrexians)
Oh by the way marks if/when day from. Few weeks ago
2.0 of the praetors and poison counters in standard we're both big whens
And probably like last time you get benefit and they get the reverse (stax) but probably give them protection like the eternalized gods got
Whenever we get a return to New Phyrexia, I can see it being as hyped as War of the Spark, I think Karn will "save" Mirrodin, however the Praetors will find their way into another plane, except Urabrask I think he'll die aiding Karn and company
Maybe a 2.0 invasion on Dominaria or we'll end up going to Elspeth's home plane as a follow up to NP

I was gonna question why urabrask would help but then I remembered he's the only phyrexian Who actually saved the mirrans as crazy as that sounds (even though he still has bad In him) also part of the reason he refused to give atraxa the 5th color
So he could aid them if he's even alive remember elesh born conquered his realm and sheoldreds

I think Return to New Phyrexia will be the Amonkhet of the Bolas Arc, Karn&co will manage to help Mirrodin however something worse awaits them, just imagine Elesh Norn and the rest of the praetors going to Elspeth's home plane as they prepare to launch an invasion on Dominaria, I know it might sound cliche, but it would be a great throwback to old-lore
Also dunno if most people know this but, Phyrexias creator was a Planeswalker he died before Yawgmoth took over, he could also have a card sometime in the future however it would be kinda hard because a Phyrexian Yawgmoth itself would have to be bonkers broken, now imagine the creator of Phyrexia, that card would have to have a 20 cmc cost

I understand that
And yeah I know there was someone who ruled phyrexia before yawgmoth did
The creator of the plane phyrexia had nothing to do with phyrexians though. He created the plane and that's it (pretty much any oldwalker back then could do this).
Yawgmoth was the one who brought over survivors of the thran empire and turned them into the phyrexians we know, naming them and the plane after "phtysis", a sickness caused by powerstone radiation.
I just know how I would want the Mirrodin/NP saga to end:
Elspeth, Koth and their allies are victorious, destroying the Phyrexian leadership. But many millions of Phyrexian creatures remain, now free-willed. The future is uncertain for this world. Will it be peace or further war, down to the last man?
Meanwhile, Tezzeret flees the plane. He had fought on behalf of the Phyrexians, though in reality he had sought to manipulate them for his own ends. The strength that he had gained from their technology has left him, and he feels weaker than ever. As he pulls up his hood and shambles toward a nearby city on a nameless plane, he fails to notice the trail of oil he is leaking...
What if the Phyrexians, under that proposed arc, were to seek out and free Emrakul (provided she's still captive in the Innistradi moon and alive by that point) for guidance and leadership and they become eldrazi phyrexian monstrosities? Huh? HUH?
