maro was recently asked to hint at something so vague that nobody would be able to understand what he was hinting at. in lieu of doing something worthwhile i've decided we should try and figure out what he is talking about.
"it looks like rain" is the hint.
this could relate to a new plane, an old plane, an event, or possibly a character? the most ominous implication of the statement would be something akin to the biblical flood. so we could see a plane that is flooding or a plane that has been flooded. an aquatic plane or underwater plane has been requested numerous times and maro has routinely said that it is unlikely and problematic. a plane which is experiencing a flooding crisis could be plausible though and it would be nice to have a set where a natural disaster is the point of conflict instead of a battle. floods are common throughout mythology so it's hard to say on which plane it might occur but theros has a god of storms and prominent seas. ral zarek is also associated with storms. i could also see kiora intentionally flooding zendikar, as she is somewhat callous.
most cards relating to rain are land destruction and i don't think that's too relevant. the storm mechanic is also obviously not relevant.
the phrase "it looks like rain" could be a quote from something else which eludes to the real meaning but the only notable instances of this quote being used are from a grateful dead song (which is pretty uninteresting) and from winnie the pooh (which is adorable). lastly the future shifted card river of tears springs to mind, because of how tears fall like rain...and it's from the future.
I don't know if MaRo's an anime fan or not but Colonel Mustang said that or something very close to that at Mayes Hughs' funeral in Full Metal Alchemist. Could refer to something sad.
on blogatog he mentions reading manga, but not watching anime. rain often shows up in scenes of sadness. i haven't seen fullmetal alchemist but now that you mention it i have seen that screen cap before. it reminds me of the classic "tears in rain" scene from blade runner.
Here's the real stretch - the quote is from FMA, with which Rosewater doubtless has at least a passing familiarity.
The very beginning of FMA's plot features a botched resurrection of a woman close to the protagonists which costs one of them his limbs and renders the other one a bodiless soul forced to live as an animated suit of metal armor.
There's a dead woman who was a close friend of one of Magic's current main protagonists, and the narrative seems to be sending him to resurrect her pretty soon... could be that bringing Elspeth back from the Underworld will cost Ajani dearly...
Here's the real stretch - the quote is from FMA, with which Rosewater doubtless has at least a passing familiarity.
it's also a direct quote from Winnie The Pooh which is thousands of times more recognisable an IP than Full sponge Alchemist and i'm pretty sure 1926 original publishing date pre-dates Full bamboo Alchemist by at least .... i dunno three years or something.
Let's broaden the thinking.
i mean what if it's a reference to clouds, honey or trees, maybe bees or floating. Alara? right?
"tut tut, it looks like rain"..... "tut-tut".... TUK-TUK CONFIRMED
Perhaps a set with Weather enchantments or spells? Hmm, what if weather control is a thing on Vryn? Blue is the most control-focused color, so a world with heavy blue influence could play up the control aspect, both in gameplay (better counterspells and removal, arresting/banishing enchantments, etc) and in flavor, demonstrating control over phenomena like weather and gravity. And of course the Ampryn and Trovians are fighting over control of the Mage-Rings. Hmm, now I'm getting some drafting theme ideas...

Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
It's a largely artificial environment - certainly not like New Phyrexia or Rath, but a huge amount of the terrain is covered in advanced buildings - so I'd be surprised if there weren't some reference to weather-making in the worldbuilding.
weather control and/or weather enchantments does sound neat. i thought about including moonfolk in the original post but i think we're pretty far off from a return to kamigawa or a set with moonfolk. vryn doesn't seem like a very nature oriented place but it's vaguely cyber punk aesthetic could lend itself to constant rain, which would again be sort of like blade runner.
it's possible that this tease is about war of the spark, although i assume it's further down the road.
It's bolas blood and guts that rain on Ravnica after he get killed and explodes in WAR

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.
Since we have Shocklands in Standard, maybe an upcoming set would be a good time to finally debut the Nimbus Maze template? I'm thinking that template would work well with a set that has twobrid mana, allowing the colorless mana to still cast spells. Speaking of which, Mage-Ring Network can produce a lot of colorless mana. Maybe Vryn is where Nimbus Maze should make its formal debut and Twobrid make a return?

We would have heard about the diamondstorms in the Origins storyline if that were the case, wouldn't we have? They seem really important, not something incidental - like something that literally defines life on a certain plane. (And of course, life on Vryn revolves around the mage-rings.)

On a somewhat more serious note, it could be a vague announcement for Return to New Phyrexia, as many Phyrexian cards from the past included references to a "rain of grease", "black rains", and "a thick greasy drool pouring from the heavans".
