I have just recently heard from a friend who was looking up some things and saw something that was being discussed. He then told me when I asked him something that Wizards of the Coast will not be producing sets after the next Ravnica set. Anybody got thoughts on that? All I have heard was that after the Ravnica set, they will just be recycling cards in core sets or something. Honestly, one of my posts mentioned the Fourth Sister that was banished from Innistrad, and I would at least like to see her world that she was banished in. Or at least visit Avabuck where Arlinn Kord had come from, or Ulrichs werewolf pack and make a battle deck or something out of it. Give me your feedback. I want to hear it.
I doubt it, it's constant revenue for WotC and numbers are pretty consistent. People of the same ilk probably think the ban list is going to be abolished next year, which is more dream than pipe.
And virtually nobody kills a goose that still lays golden eggs.
The concisest and truest response.
Even if WotC wanted to stop producing Magic - and why would they, since that's how they pay their bills - Hasbro would not stand for losing a profitable property.
Is your friend Alpha Investments? Rudy was talking about this a while ago suggesting that WOTC (well Hasbro really) was potentaly going to sell the MTG brand since they are seeing a decline in Player base attending tournments year over year.

This is the most ridiculous thread I have ever seen, for starters. Yeah, WotC is just going to cut their biggest and oldest card game. Lol what? Your friend needs to stop believing everything he hears.
And just because they see a decline in tourney attendance doesn't mean that the game is failing... and it especially doesn't warrant a "let's just stop making magic cards".
But I'm just ranting and I'm sure everyone else has said it already.

For the record, Rudy didn't talk about Wizards selling off MtG. He was talking about Hasbro selling Wizards of the Coast off. Kind of a big detail there that was missing...

WotC isn't completely out of ideas for new cards If they actually know where to look. If we're looking at this on an EDH/Commander perspective, Red lacks enough reliable graveyard recursion abilities as much as White still struggles with mana ramp. With Boros getting more support in the upcoming Ravnica block we might see these types of strategies come to fruition a bit more. Selesnya is another guild that's heavily under supported as much as Boros is while I'd also like to see more Simic Commanders given that there's not a whole lot of options to choose from unfortunately.

peoples reactions here are far too extreme. however unlikely it may be, its not as ridiculous as everyone is saying.
im sure early news of the core set being discontinued 5 years ago would've seemed very ridiculous also.
if there's any truth to it, it might be more along the lines of commander products and things like battlebond being much much cheaper to produce (as there is so much less focus on world building and narrative), that they become wizards focus for the next five years and some new kind of standard format is introduced to support it. it might be that wizards are just experimenting with very dramatic set structure changes more frequently and the next approach is some kind of core set + something else focused system. who knows!
im not saying any of that is likely, im saying its NOT impossible. anything is possible. the company will just continue to try and satisfy customers and make the most money possible from each product. for all we know they have figured out some new approach, focused on core sets that IS infact much better than the current system.

This is the video he is talking about. But his reply illustrates how stories change as they get relayed from one person to the next. I wonder what the OP's friend was originally told, that got passed along to this point. Could be that, they are going to eliminate a type of product/set from their line, but I think we can all agree that Wizards isn't just going to stop making Magic sets outright.
This does sound ridiculous, but it might save them a lot of money to go entirely digital and forego the cost of printing and distribution.
Why would they do that when there's still a market for physical/print media? Not everyone is on board the full digital bandwagon much like how not every gamer has fully embraced VR as a potential evolutionary step for the video game industry. Maybe If the cost of paper hadn't gone up whether If it's due to tariffs or the markets trying to force feed this full digital agenda down people's throats then there would be less people complaining about card stock quality issues.
Same argument can be made with physical copies of video games where companies no longer put the time and effort into adding in instruction manuals. I mean I get it, companies want to cut corners without having to pay an additional cost to release product but what good is that going to do If nobody except a younger demographic of consumers will buy into it? All I'm saying is that there needs to be something for everyone instead of a specific age demographic of consumers.
It's why physical/print media and digital media need to co-exist.

I´d quit. Simple as that. I find paper MTG a lot more enjoyable than digital, and I mostly play MTGO/A to bridge between paper events so that I can stay on top of my game and practice formats/matchups. For a lot of people, it´s not about the Magic, it´s about the Gathering.
Paper sets will be here for the foreseeable future before they even consider completely taking a very bold step away from print media. I think their printing/distribution model will change before that to save $$, and if Rudy is actually telling the truth maybe they are starting to do that? If they figure out they don't need to print as much product upfront to satisfy release day and GP events, they would cut initial production prior to switching to on-demand. Slowing the release of the product to distributors may create artificial demand initially, but if the whole-sale price doesn't change, then I don't see how that is beneficial to WotC if nothing else changed in the supply chain? Maybe it is a slower release of product to compensate for the printing of the next run, just so they don't sit on product to sell to distributors? Supply chain management is a big deal to any corporation and are always trying to find ways to optimize.
Honestly, I didn't think MtG would be around after 25 years with their ups and downs, and I hope it lasts another 25.
