But now these new spells use damage, much like Syphon Soul from Legends. Could it be a one time throwback, or is this going to be a new trend for black? It is possible that it is related to the removal of the PW redirection rule, they also streamlined life loss and damage.
MaRo confirmed that they are moving away from life loss as an effect (it will continue to appear as a cost) in favor of direct damage in black.

(U/B) is :symbu: or :symub: and the same is true for the other 9 hybrid symbols with their two colors in for the last 2 leters of the code. ((2/B) and co are :sym2b:)
Alternatively {UB} or {2B} in [mana] tags are (U/B) or (2/B) T is :symtap: and T will give T in [mana] tags
Makes sense, the distinction always felt a bit arbitrary and black was technically getting better burn than red since damage prevention couldn't stop something like Bump in the Night.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
I liked black getting an unpreventable equivalent to damage against players the same way black got an unpreventable equivalent to damage against creatures and planeswalkers. If damage prevention was more common this distinction could have been used as a meaningful design element. But going the other way with it for consistency is fine as well.

Planar Chaos was not a mistake neither was it random. You might want to look at it again.

It's definitely to make learning the game easier, as new players will often have a hard time comprehending the difference between "deals 3 damage" and "target player loses 3 life".

I wouldn't say they'll "often" have a hard time, but anything that makes the game easier to learn, even if only a little, is welcome.
Modern "drain life effects" like Syphon Life or Extort mechanic use life loss. Cards for life spells like Phyrexian Arenaa up to Dusk Legion Zealot also use life loss.
But now these new spells use damage, much like Syphon Soul from Legends. Could it be a one time throwback, or is this going to be a new trend for black? It is possible that it is related to the removal of the PW redirection rule, they also streamlined life loss and damage.

Finally a good white villain quote: "So, do I ever re-evaluate my life choices? Never, because I know what I'm doing is a righteous cause."
