Its been retired to deciduous (storm scale 2), meaning they can use when they need too but its no longer being used in every block now.

It is just going by the wayside. I guess since its on the scale to still come back, ill have hope it wont go to the graveyard with the likes of banding and regenerate (which seen to crazily work just fine in my circle)

Been a member here for over a dozen years. Playing since '95 just got lost in the twitch shuffle.
Protection is also very swingy, same reason they got rid of intimidate and landwalk, the fact protection has so many uses and single cards with aren't too broken is why it kept as a tool.

Whenever I say something similar, my buddy reminds me that Magic is designed for 13 year olds and up. Not all of them are very bright

which is ironically my point. Abilities now are way more complicated and there is much more game state to analyze.
paying a cost so a creature doesnt die (I guess its a removal of combat stacj that did it in) and choosing how damage is dealt to attackers and blockers, seem Very simple and intuitive to me.
But I was ridiculed as a dork when first started playing just like the rest of my "smart" friends.....go figure
Can't target me because I have protection from Salt; more like cards need protection from bannings.
Nah Protection is limiting on interactions so it makes undesirable board states and whatnot. I think that WotC is trying to be like user friendly rivals (hearthstone) to make interactions and gameplay smoother. They did the same thing with regenerate and "indestructible until end of turn". I think that protection still has practical and thematic, like a sun based card have pro-vampire and the like.
I'd like to see protection from planeswalkers; The Immortal Sun is along a similar vein. However I think it's a hard mechanic to implement.
Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest WUR Voltron Control
Temmet, Vizier of Naktamun WU Unblockable Mirror Trickery
Ra's al Ghul (Sidar Kondo) and Face-Down Ninjas
Brudiclad, Token Engineer
Vaevictis (VV2) the Dire Lantern
Rona, Disciple of Gix
Tiana the Auror
Hallar
Ulrich the Politician
Zur the Rebel
Scorpion, Locust, Scarab, Egyptian Gods
O-Kagachi, Mathas, Mairsil
"Non-Tribal" Tribal Generals, Eggs
They've moved away from "protection" because the way it works is sometimes un-intuitive.
