I saw this discussed elsewhere on the internet but didn't see it here. In Maro's 2016 article titled "Tell Me What You Want" he discussed a range of things which players had frequently requested. Looking back on this article now it is quite comedic...because almost all of the things that he mentioned came to fruition. Here are some of ideas that he mentions in the article which we have already seen happen/announced:
- a return to dominaria set (dominaria)
- a kaladesh/indian inspired set (kaladesh)
- an egyptian inspired set (amonkhet)
- a block with a -1/-1 counter theme (amonkhet)
- a meso-american inspired set (ixalan)
- pirates (ixalan)
- dinosaurs (ixalan)
- a tribal block (ixalan)
- bringing back cycling (amonkhet)
- bringing back split cards (amonkhet)
- bringing back double sided cards (shadows over innistrad)
- legendary werewolf (shadows over innistrad)
- black oath card (oath of liliana)
- legendary taigam creature card (commander 2017)
There are quite a few things in the article which simply don't seem plausible (bringing back storm/phyrexian mana) but there are also a few that haven't happened yet and don't seem improbable or impossible. One of these suggestions is a Viking inspired set, and another is to have a card representing the enigmatic Raven Man character from Lilliana's backstory. Now anybody who knows anything about Norse mythology will tell you that the Odin, king of the Norse Gods, is often accompanied by Ravens. These two factors lead me to believe that there will almost certainly be a Norse/Viking set and that the Raven Man will be a primary character in it.
Some of the other suggestions from the article which haven't yet happened: a Fblthp card, bringing back Grandeur, and a Wild West set. The set after Dominaria is code-named 'Spaghetti'. Maybe that's the Western set? Get your playset of Crested Sunmare while you can. Yeehaw.
Oh pleease i hope they never have the terrible idea to do western theme !
I cant stand anything related to that !

i also had this thought. i like norse mythology but we can't just have a new cycle of gods every set. i wonder if they might handle them differently. i could see them being somewhat standard legendary creatures with a flip side or a unique but situational mechanic.

They will undoubtly be different than Theros & Amonkhet-Gods.
Impossible to guess as of now,
But once we know the story about em, we have a better idea.
Theros & Amonkhet Gods were designed according to the story.
Theros ones need enough worshippers & Amonkhet ones need certain things to pass their respective trial & prove worthy.
I wonder what said Viking-Gods (ooooh that term ^^) possibly demand. & how many ones bein incorporated when only 3 ones come to my mind
One thing with Norse mythology, they undermined themselves with the HOU story, but they are not truly immortal, they are SUPPOSED to die at some point, maybe they don't have Indestructible, they might have some Ragnarok card that you can sac a God to for a stupid strong bonus, or something when they die
Also, I would love to see them have like a Mjolnir cycle. I hated it so much that the Theros gods could not be equipped with their weapons. a melee weapon is equipment, full stop. they could have a legendary weapon for each God. all are powerful Equipments, but with an added bonus if equipped to their God

There wasn't space on the card, Wizards can't really change that.
I think we'll eventually see most of the things listed in the article.
The tell-tale sign is their doing away with blocks. Now we can stop off at Theros for a single set, then Alara, then Ulgothra, then two sets for Zendikar, then one set for Kamigawa then two sets for Lorwyn>Shadowmoor (Shadowmoor>Lorwyn?) and then a couple of new worlds.
The return sets I've listed would have previously been 3 and a half blocks under the two block paradigm, and under the 3 block paradigm only two and a core sets.
So that's 6/7 worlds visited in the time it previously took for 3 or 2. This won't happen all the time but the potential is there were it once was not.
And that's just world revisits - we can still get fresh blocks for Vryn and Shandalar and other Magic-original/real-world inspired places. Then there's the stuff like themes and mechanics.
I think a Viking world is majorly overdue, we're more likely to see that soon.
I'm intrigued at the idea of a Western world, if guns are considered too modern. Crossbow Western?
You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
I don't know how they could possibly pull of a western world and still feel like magic. But they did do "steampunk" with Kaladesh, so I suppose its possible.
Yup, I can see it now: Two bearded mean, horned helmets gleaming in the wintry noon sun, slowly strutting up to the dueling site. They stare each other down for a moment, then draw their weapons and- THWACK! One lays dead, hatchet in his head. One walks away, 'live to fight another day.

Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. i sincerely hope they will NEVER make a western set, yuck!

I can understand if a Western set doesn't interest you, but that's no reason to deny fans who are interested in a Western set. We're getting Dinosaurs and Pirates, so I see no reason why we can't get cowboys and cowgirls.
Personally, I could see a few Magic tribes fitting in to such a world, namely Aven, Centaurs, Minotaurs, and Naga. They could introduce Coyotefolk as stand-ins for Goblins. The lack of guns could be problematic, but you could always adapt spellslinging in place of gunslinging. I would settle for a middle ground with spellshots.
"Indian" tropes tend to be seen as stereotyped and offensive, so they'll probably omit those, though Centaurs and Minotaurs with Native American attributes could actually look kinda cool.

Cowboys and Indians would be pretty cool. Get a tissue, pansy.
Vikings and Cowboys however, is dumb. Just like Pirates and Dinosaurs is dumb. They should do 1 type at a time(so tribes aren't always worthless). Oh you mean I want to make a Temur Pirate deck? Too Bad. Or at least have some sort of common ground between 2 types. IE: Pirates and Mariners, Cowboys and Indians, Dinosaurs and... Cats/Gods/Birds? They could just call Vikings Savages, with nordic-themed art.
Ninjas and Pirates. Oh wait...

Rude much? You just made my ignore list, pardner. And HOW. That Cowboys and Indians enough for you?
Anyway, I actually thought it might be interesting to see a block dedicated to animal tribes influenced by various American cultures, not stereotyped cigar shop "Injuns" but rather different cultures from different regions of the American continents, including prairie nomads, arctic Inuits, warriors from the mountains and plateaus influenced by Aztec, Incan, and Mexican cultures, and forest and jungle-dwelling tribes. Of course I'd like to think there's enough material for North and South America to each get a set.

Are you referring to when the Vikings visited Canada, or when the Pilgrim settlers came to the future colonies? I'm assuming the latter.
I concede that separating Native American from Western is probably for the best. At the very least, it gives each theme more breathing room. Green in Western then will probably be centered around Centaurs, Nagas, and the occasional hunter?

Rattlesnake Nagas. They would be a good choice for BG; the black Naga are outlaws, while the green are shamans and warriors. I guess you could have some blue Naga too, but the creative in this case favors BG.
Centaurs I picture being GW; the green Centaurs are more tribal much like the Naga, while the white are cowboys and lawmen. Then you have WUB Aven, BR Coyotefolk, and RWB Minotaurs.

I can't see why Guns need to be a huge factor in a wild western set. Creatures with first strike, reach, double strike, etc all evoke the idea of firearms well enough that they don't need special rules to be implemented in the set. Make them old and steampunky enough and they won't feel busted.
The Western themed set will have Spellslingers rather than Gunslingers, but I can't see why they wouldn't be able to do it. instead of gunfighters they would have Spell duels. All in all, I don't see it as being out of the question.
Things I expect to see in the coming years ....
Viking Themed Set
Roman Themed Set
New Japanese World set
Possibly a set done in Fiora in competitive magic
Vryn - almost certainly Jace's world will be fleshed out
Things I believe they will go back to in the next 2-4 years
Ravnica 3 - Two large sets
Theros 2 - set as a Rescue from the Underworld from Theros followed by a set back on Theros (or maybe the other way around)
New Phyrexia - We need to find out what Koth is up to. It's been a long time since we've heard from him.
Alara - possibly we will find out that the conflux has started to crumble and that the worlds are breaking apart again.
I think a viking set is really overdue, we will get one latest 2020 I suppose.
I've never been a fan of cowboys and western, too 'murican for my taste. But a world inspired by native americans would be awesome and full of potential, just ... before the white man came across the sea. Or the invaders are phyrexians this time
I've talked about this with my friends a lot over the years. Native American set, but a reskinned and "fixed" kamigawa. They have all kinds of odd looking or interesting looking spirit / things, and it totally rides into the whole spirit / material world. Now, just no repeat of the same story. It could also bring back functionally identical mechanics, like soulshift, but with a different name.
With lessons learned by WotC, I'd buy into a set like that.

You guys can't imagine how much I want to see a top-down Western world in Magic. Possibilities are endless (and I just adore westerns, which is the main reason, to be honest ). I guess we don't need firearms but a set based on "late" culture is still possible (for example, Innistrad feels more like something from XVIII-XIX century rather than true medieval, the same is true for Ixalan and, of course, technologically developed worlds such as Kaladesh).
While I wouldn't mind a Western themed set, dude... just play Doomtown and get your Western fix there. If Magic did Western they'd have to heavily adapt the theme to MTG standards, resulting in people who just want a regular MTG set being disappointed, and people who want pure Western flavor will be disappointed as well. Nobody would be fully pleased, so if you just want to play a Western supernatural tcg, just play Doomtown.
I think I've learned to treat Magic cards like baseball cards: keep 'em in a binder in numerical order, don't play with 'em, try to finish the set and just keep my head down.
