prowling serpopard was spoiled some time ago. Many people including myself thought that this meant that good counterspells were returning to standard. A lot of people even thought that this card could mean a counterspell reprint.
however, after all of the new cards spoiled, we have only gotten 1 counterspell, essence scatter. None of the counterspells in standard justify the printing of prowling serpopard.
Additionally MaRo has confirmed that counterspell will not be getting a reprint in ahmonket
do you think this means that there is still a powerful counterspell that hasn't been spoiled yet.
Or do you think this is just WoTC hating on control for no reason.
there is also the possibility that we could get powerful counterspells in hour of devastation

is this for hour of devastation where we do get good counterspells?

I'd like an ounce or two of whatever those people were on. Let's make it two.

Source? I don't doubt you, I just want to see the question and his response. If someone asked "Is Counterspell going to be in Amonkhet?" and his reply was anything other than a few paragraphs of laughter followed by the poo emoji, I'll be genuinely surprised.

Alright, all joking aside, the running theory is that Amonkhet will be crammed with goodies for Selesnya 'slingers, then Hour of Devastation will give Grixis the spotlight. I'm trying to stifle my cynicism long enough to buy into that, but we blue mages have been crippled so badly that I can't remember how to cast it.
As for Counterspell ever being printed in Standard again... I'll eat a copy of each unplayable counterspell from the two blocks prior if C-spell is ever printed in a Modern-legal set.
(Oh, who am I kidding? It'll happen eventually. Probably a set or two after they print a one-mana artifact with "This can't be countered. Spells you control can't be countered. Whenever an opponent casts a blue spell, you may slap them across the face. If you don't, they lose 3 life, then slap them across the face anyway.")

There was a time when, after years of absence, Lightning Bolt was reprinted, and standard legal for a good few years. Now, creatures are more powerfull than ever, and blue color is in its weakest...

MaRo confirmed that counterspell will not be in ahmonket, as it is a masterpiece, and aven mindscensor, and the gods are the only masterpieces being printed in the set.
I don't see why they won't print another Counterspell-Esque card for standard.
My personal belief is that considering standard is a constantly changing format, they should have at least different deck types taking the spot light from time to time to mix things up. Why can't Control be powerful for a season? Other deck types get to be powerful. The last "control" deck I got to play was Seasons Past; but it was short lived due to the rotation of Dark Petition.
I think there will be a good Counterspell printed soon. I just don't know when and why they are so afraid of it.

Because Countereqsue spells are scary to new players in general? Why else would they print a comfort card like serpopod? Can't be countered? Creature spells can't be countered? First time I saw that text I thought I was looking at a custom card. Also doesn't seem like they're trying to appeal to Standard players here.
I learned magic with powerful (playable) counterspells, I teached friends the game with powerful counterspells, and neither of us has quit, because bis spell was answered. Oh, and those counterspells used to be 2-mana commons and uncommons, not 3-mana rares ...
But Essence Scatter is a step in the right direction I guess.
Note that I said in general...
I've seen more than one beginner player get upset when I Boomeranged his CoP then push through with a direct damage spell. Or Stasis out his lands to make his spells dead cards. It seems like WotC considers Counterspell anything is unfun and that's bad for beginners....
If someone gets upset because something gets bounced, that person should probably look for another game to play.
If you are a game designer and people playing your game get upset and look for another game to play, you are facing a problem. If you lose your audience, then you lose your product.

It's a shame the game is so tailored to beginners and they rarely throw a bone to returning players.
My best hope would be a Miscalculation reprint. It's also not an extremely powerful card, but it's a helluva lot better than Revolutionary Rebuff.
They've shown willingness recently to print more powerful counterspells, but never to print cheaper ones. They are printing cards like Summary Dismissal, Insidious Will and Disallow, which are undeniably stronger than a lot of previous cards, but they don't do the crucial thing, which is to cost 0, 1, or 2. I predict that if we do see any more counter magic in Amonkhet, it'll probably be a three or four mana rare spell with a powerful upside. In other words, barely playable. They also print extremely niche counterspells that are actually pretty powerful. Dispel, Disdainful Stroke, Ceremonious Rejection, and Swan Song (though that's older) are all actually really powerful, but they are also really limited. Silumgar's Scorn is particularly odd: I never thought I needed a dragon tribal counterspell.
I'm all in on a two mana counter anything with downside, like Deprive, but that's just not likely considering their recent trends. Sadly, Counterspell just isn't going to happen. Not yet.
We should all stop to marvel how much of an insane fluke it was that they ever came close to printing Mental Misstep. It's likes shall not be seen again.
But is this worse than losing the interest of people who have been loyal to your game for many years?
Neither you nor me have in our quoted statements made a distinction between old and new players. Upsetting the audience is a problem you put to the game creator. If you blame the audience, you already no longer think in terms of what is best for the game, but in terms of your own preferences.

Yeah, but that's what SavannahLion said. Beginner players were upset because thei Circle got bounced by Boomerang. I know that it only matters what the majority of players want, but if they are goinh to nerf everything the might upset a beginner some where at an fnm tbale, they would upset quite a few old players with it.
Let's take the question further: Would the number of new players go down if WotC prints cards like Mana Leak or Miscalculation?
Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think that's the case.
counterspell was in standard for all of pre-8th edition with no problem.
if counterspell was standard legal then and caused no problems then, I see no problem with printing it now.
when I learned how to play magic, counterspells were one of my favorite parts of the game. One of my first decks was a UR control deck that countered everything my opponents tried to play until it got enough lands for a lethal devil's play.
The deck wasn't very good, but my point is counterspells are not something that will drive new players from the game.

Getting upset at a Stasis lock is fairly understandable. Prison is the epitome of bad game design. Not sure why Boomeranging a CoP would be any more upsetting than Naturalizing it, though.

Because I didn't play Disenchant? Seriously, one of the mistakes that many beginner players make is to include CoP's for every color in a deck. That's 20 freaking card slots taken up, 24 if they remember to include Circle of Protection: Artifacts. Back then, not now anyways. So playing Ux means you focus on whatever color x is dealing damage. It frustrates the heck out of beginner players to see their CoPs doing jack as you ignore the irrelevant colors. I recall plopping down a Su-Chi once amidst a full five colors of CoP and watched as my opponet struggled to find the Disenchant.
To wit, my point is that current Standard games seem to play more like Cyberball instead of Wizards dueling. New players seem to like playing creatuers vs creatures games. Counter spells? Direct damage? Oh no... those are no fun. They're fine fodder for Tarmogoyf though.
Give it time, it'll be Magic-Gi-Oh to entice YGO players.

But it has been the CoPs that were badly designed in that case hence they have been removed from the game and bounce effects remain (though Boomerang has been replaced with Echoing Truth etc.)

Just to set the record straight the scarcity of control decks, blue based ones in particular, in Standard is a recent phenomena. Last spring's rotation really did a number on those decks from which they haven't recovered from since. Amonkhet looks well positioned to change that and in a perfect world it should be able to do so without bans.
Having said all this I feel like WotC spits in my face every damn time I see a Cancel reprint. It's been plain filler for over 10 years now and it's getting old. They made their point that unconditional counters with no drawbacks shouldn't cost less then three. Maybe some more experimentation with conditional counters at two or less would be more appropriate (Censor is a very guarded step in that direction but it is a welcome one nonetheless)?
Getting Counterspell back might end up having unforeseen consequences though. Not on Standard in particular (which it Would) but on the counter suite we have available in that format. I would like to see it back at some point but not if it's return meant we would lose access to other cheap counters like Dispel or Negate. To top it all off having Counterspell around would almost certainly mean that we wouldn't be getting other relevant new counterspells for at least two years. I love the card, I really do, but the price for having it back seems rather steep.

In my dream, the world had suffered a terrible disaster. A black haze shut out the sun, and the darkness was alive with the moans and screams of wounded people. Suddenly, a small light glowed. A candle flickered into life, symbol of hope for millions. A single tiny candle, shining in the ugly dark. I laughed and blew it out.

Still nothing to justify cat-snake...
The mechanics in ahmonket also seem to hate on control as well. Embalm is a pain for control as they need to spend 2 cards getting rid of 1 creature.
Indestructible gods also suck for control decks, and we haven't seen that many great answers
