So did you any go to the prerelease? Did you have a good time? Anything unexpected happen? Well, that’s the topic of today’s column. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, you will very shortly.
Let’s begin by reviewing the last three weeks of previews.
Three weeks ago, I talked about Time Spiral’s nostalgia theme. That’s something old.
Two weeks ago, I talked about Time Spiral’s time motif. That’s something new.
Last week, I talked about how we took split second away from Coldsnap. That’s something borrowed.
That means this week it’s time for something blue.
/END of UPDATE
This is a repeat of something I posted in the actual rumor mill, but felt it deserved it's own thread. I feel that purple may be coming our way finally. Here's the original post:
Again to this part: Did somebody beside me noticed that the sixth planet is purple? PURPLE?!!
I think this particular post was buried too quickly and brushed aside with the note that purple sometimes represents black. I guess in the same way that yellowish represents white?
The problem is, there is already a black planet represented. On top of that, as noted in the attachment, the colors are placed in a pattern to neighbor the ally colors. The color purple WAS suppose to be allies of Black & Blue, and has been speculated and rumored for the longest time (I remember an article in the late 90's in either Scrye or Inquest... I forget which).
Here's an article written in 2007 concerning the topic:
1) In the artwork, the green planet is being destroyed and, as stated, Purple was supposed to be a direct enemy of green.
2) Mark Rosewater twitter comments on Shake:
Finished 1st ever Shake booster draft. I drafted something players have never been able to draft around before but I believe will want to.
and...
Not only does Shake have something new, it also has something old, something borrowed and something blue.
About to start 2nd ever Shake draft. I'll try to draft something I can't actually talk about, make an obscure tweet and start more threads.
Well... something "new" that they've never been able to draft would certainly be purple cards.
3) I'm certainly no Vorthos, but perhaps some other board members who are can come up with why purple would be found on a return trip to Mirrodin. Maybe something about the corrupting sludge or ooze or whatever it was? Yes, I know - this isn't evidence.
The main problem with your theory is that the art is for an unspoiled card in M11, which will NOT have purple cards in (crunch confirms, and core set is no place for such a debut).
Even if this was art for SoM, it's still much more likely the 'black' planet represents colourless, rather than the purple planet representing purple. The MaRo hints are too broad and could apply to far too many things (which he actually acknowledges in his second tweet), and furthermore they are for the block AFTER SoM.
So...none of this supports purple.
Eye of Ugin teased the word "Eldrazi", yet there were none.
Shield of Kaldra spoke of Helm of Kaldra, a card not yet printed

Point? This isn't something new for them to do.
Eye of Ugin was printed in Zendikar block, which includes Rise of the Eldrazi.
Shield of Kaldra was printed in Mirrodin block, which includes Fifth Dawn.
This card, printed in M11, will not be part of the Scars of Mirrodin block. So yes, this WOULD be something new for them to do.

I think the main reason this is a definitive no is because it is in a core set. Were they to introduce something like this it would be in a set like Shards where the specifics of that set's world dictated that "purple" mana made sense.
(Also, I for one, would not like to see another color added, even for a block).
The order of the planets is (clockwise): Red, Blue, Green, White, Black ("purple"), and Colorless. The order you suggest is ignoring spatial clues, which clearly puts the blue planet between the red and green ones.

Shield of Kaldra was printed in Mirrodin block, which includes Fifth Dawn.

Obviously the fact that this is not part of a block has been brought up numerous times as if it's relevant. I'm merely saying that if this is purple, it's a teaser for things to come. So the best response I have to it being part of a core set rather than part of a block:
How useful was Vampire Nocturnus before the sets that came to follow?
Lock plz.
Really? Lock plz? Is this not a speculation forum?
The "Black" planet probably does represent colorless mana. The Purple planet is more than likely black. Even a glimpse at the new Liliana's Caress and Liliana Vess show that black magic is also portrayed as purple. Same with the new Lich card.

Even though there is a clear ally ring going on, black is more often represented with the color black, the purple planet would be out of place for the ally ring, and that the fact that purple is supposed to be the opposite of green, and the green planet is exploding. Yeah other than all of that, it's clearly the colorless and black planet.
The sixth color is never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever going to happen. Get over it.
Thank you all knowing god. I shall take this information and move forward in life knowing that if I need to know something, I shall merely need to consult thee.
I'm not even really campaigning for it, as you think I am. I think it could mess with the game pretty hardcore if it wasn't done correctly. Drafts and sealed decks would be made entirely more difficult unless they upped the amount of cards in a pack. You would be taking away cards from other colors to make room for a 6th one.
The biggest problem with the 6th color is that the 5 colors we have often don't have enough bleed over to support mechanics from another color. They aren't too dense, the're too sparse.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
I HIGHLY, HIGHLY doubt that a sixth color will ever happen. Like. I doubt it so much that I'll go as far as to say it will never happen.
The simple reason why? The card backs. Adding a sixth color would completely destroy the model of the game that has been happening for years.
Japanese pokemon cards have only 7 types on their backs, there are 9 altogether, the backs do not represent steel and dark. It's not that big of an issue.
Actually... the article I linked from '07 addressed the card back, and touched on how the new model would work in theory.
Looks like people are more worried with blindly shooting down the idea of it that appreciating the effort you put into looking into it. Not sure how I feel about the idea either, but certainly think it's interesting and a fun read.
What you labeled "black" is a moon for the red planet. The "purple" planet is the one that is there to represent swamps. There are other bodies such as an asteroid belt there too so it looks more spacey. notice how the blue planet has rings around it, unless you want to argue that those too are new colors I doubt you can make this connection. It's just artwork, and an exceptional claim that they are adding a sixth color needs exceptional evidence.
Fixed:
I found something additional. Take it for what it's worth:
One of Mark Rosewaters latest tweets was the following:

So the question is, is Wizards still throwing this idea around?
EDIT: ALSO, as noted in the article, Purple was supposed to be a direct enemy of GREEN, the planet that is... um... blowing up?

When has colorless or "brown" mana ever been represented in any form? I could be wrong, but I don't recall any cards or pictures that do so.
Note that all of those were in blocks, not a core set.
Eye of Ugin was printed in Zendikar block, which includes Rise of the Eldrazi.
