I have been search high and low, and I have found no mention of this. I thought I recalled some in R&D saying that they're going to start exploring block themes/keywords in other sets. I believe they said that there just wasn't enough room to fully explore themes. My questions is: What do you think would be explored in Zendikar or beyond?
My guess is Exalted. I just feel like that since it is a combat based mechanic, it would be in WoTC's new idea of pushing aggro.
I can also see wither coming back, and maybe even more.
I'm pretty sure Exalted has been developed close to as much as possible and Wither just didn't really impress me, so I really do not feel that it will ever be touched on again.
Me: "Galadrial"? That cat's name should totally be Quumulox the Devastator.
Friend: Send in a request.
Me: These people don't understand. Cute things need violent and big-sounding names. Like, "Hey, have you seen my cat, Rakshor of the Blood-Pit Tribe?" Turns out the cat's, like, a five-week old kitten that makes everyone that sees it give the cliche "Aaaaaaaawww!" and a huge smile.
Friend: I think that would be a little too epic for regular folks.
Me: **** those *******. I want a kitten named Rakshor of the Blood-Pit Tribe. ****, I want a Blood-Pit Tribe of cats. They'd need other tribes to make cat-war with. Like, a next-door neighbor that's a crazy cat lady. She can have the Complete-******* Tribe.
Morph without Creatures makes a lot of sense and fits Mark Rosewater's hints. Fits the 'perils' and 'treasures' extremely well. Its on my short list of possibilities.
However, the MaRo quote implies that the "___ without ___" will be a surprise. We've already had morph without creatures in Future Sight, so it can't be a surprise.
It could return, but it's not what he was talking about.
(unless it's morph on nonpermanents....)
Don't even touch the morph on nonpermanents. I wrote rules for it one time that I think work and got the reminder text down to a reasonable size, but it's far too confusingly worded unless you're ok with the possiblity of an instant/sorcery being on the battlefield.
Anyone else think that the "___ without ___" could be "creatures without abilitys". Muraganda Petroglyphs and Imperiosaur have been speculated as possibles.
Splice without Arcane is one of the most accepted guesses for that hint. I'm just not sure how surprising it would be, but still.

Unless they just go as now in standard and it was:
Transmute would fit the theme of treasure-hunting, I'd say. It might not be exactly what MaRo was talking about in that quote, but I could see Transmute being explored a bit more. Maybe cards with transmute that have abilities when they get transmuted?
Thanks to the reveal of the Intimidate ability it's probably something unexciting as "Fear without Black"
I would agree with you, if it hadn't been done inTimeSpiralblock. Plus the fact that, like Splice without Arcane, Morph without Creatures, and several other examples, it's a very natural extension. So, fortunately, intimidate is not what maro was referring to with the _________ without ________.

Despite my name, I do not play casual magic. Just thought that would be good to tell people.
There are lots of mechanics that are not fully explored.
Ravnica mechanics, for example, are all limited to their respective guilds (and 2 colors). Any one of those can be expanded to all 5 colors (Ok, maybe Bloodthirst is not in flavor for all colors)
Future Sight mechanics of course are there as possible future mechanics.

The guild specific keyword abilities were made for those specific colors because they felt best in those colors. Green and white both are creature heavy colors (consider Planar Chaos, with Glorious Anthem being shifted to Gaia's Anthem, and Soul Warden shifted to Essence Warden). Convoke naturally fits well into those two specific colors.
Likewise, Hellbent felt very BR. Consider cards like One with Nothing or Gamble. Red and black together make a very reckless color combination, and Hellbent represented that feeling very well. It also worked well with the return of Madness, conveniently put heavily into red and black for the Time Spiral block.
The only ability I personally felt could have been done better was Haunt.

You both are wrong ... err or maybe it would be better to say half wrong. For sure Fear has been done in colors besides black like you said, but as far as I've seen Intimidate has never been done before. Why do I say this? Because Intimidate is Fear without color words. Yes, you heard me correctly. From the Intimidate thread:
702.11
This is intimidate, an evergreen keyword that doesn't quite exist yet. A creature with intimidate can't be blocked except by artifact creatures and/or creatures that share a color with it. It's coming soon, so rather than renumber everything in a few months, it was added in early. (It essentially takes the place of fear, which will remain in place but won't appear on new cards.)
This means that Intimidate changes what creatures can block as the attacking creature changes colors. This is not how fear nor those other cards you mentioned work. They use a color word so that even if their color changes the creatures that can block are the same. Not so with Intimidate, and as far as I can tell this has never been done in this particular way before, so it's new just as MaRo stated.

I never said "fear without black=intimidate," I said, "fear without black=already done."
Anyways, to actually add to the discussion, I still like the idea I had when maro first had the ______ without _______ quote, which is morph without morph costs. So creatures that unmorph with triggered abilities rather than activated abilities. So, for example:
Big Guy 8GG
Trample
When there are no other face-up creatures on the battlefield, turn Big Guy face up.
Morph
10/10
Just as an example, that probably won't see print.

Yes, but...it's still not surprising. MaRo's been moaning for ages about how keywording Fear was a bad idea, precisely because it was colour specific. This is the natural implementation of a non-colour-specific Fear.
In addition, the keyword itself is new, which doesn't fit the quote:
(this is in an article about bringing Cycling back, so it's definitely referring to an old mechanic)
For this reason, I think the prime candidates are the Ravnica guild mechanics. They're the only natural coupling of mechanic/flavour that exist, and the only real mechanic/mechanic coupling is Splice/Arcane* (which is equally likely). Trouble is...which one?
*OK, also Poison/Poisonous, but that doesn't seem so far fetched.
They already brought back all of the Ravnica block guild mechanics in the Time Spiral block. Try again.
Maybe Threshold without graveyard? Maybe Land based Threshold...Like: Baby Falcon1WW
Creature - Bird Land-Ho 5 - ~ gets +3/+3 and Flying as long as you control 5 basic lands.

Hm. At first I was like "seems a lot like Domain", but then I noticed my brain was inserting a "different" between 5 and Basic. Once I got over that crossed wire it made a lot more sense, and I gotta say I like the idea. Lots of design space to work with in counting permanents for some sort of threshold variant.

Creatures could be a Threshold...
Elven Captain1GG
Creature - Elf Warrior
Forestwalk

Maybe all permanents? Vampiric Underling2B

Why not just rename the new catds Traps?!!?!
I hope it is affinity, I think the mechanic can be good if developed properly and have it based on colored/colorless permanents.

Fun, not very related, fact: Imperiosaur does have an ability and is not affected by Muraganda Petroglyphs.

I would love this. I think it interacting more widely would be a bonus
