Does anyone know the scoop on all the shadowy references in Matt Cavotta's last two "Taste The Magic" columns? Today's column is his swan song, and I don't get the legal trouble references and the like?
Is this all common knowledge and I'm just missing something, or is it all a secret plot?
Anyone know to what I'm referring?
BTW I greatly enjoyed his reign and the rise of Vorthos.
I hope Planeswalkers work out well.

Well in his article earlier this week he talked about not being able to write for WoTC for a while since he was quitting and thus he wrote his articles all in advance so that they wouldn't have to skip any. He said this made some rulemongers and lawyers unhappy, my guess is that they are still unhappy about it and this is the legal trouble they're angry about. But who knows, they could of found out that he was giving us spoiled cards or something.

THAT is the legal trouble that I was spidey-sensing. I don't think he would get into trouble and sacked for proposing cards that were too hard to fit in the rules. In fact it seems like the most outlandish thing her ever proposed (planeswalkers) were fully embraced.
His last two articles just seemed to say there was something real he did that put him in hot water, and I was curious no one has the dirt....or around here, quality speculation about the dirt at least.

It sounded like he and his wife made the decision to move back to Ohio so his kids could be closer to their extended family. He wasn't fired, nor did he just quit and give them the finger.
He left for family reasons. It's hard. I know what that's like. I wish him the best.
He's still doing art for Magic. If he had been fired for some legal reason, They would have taken him off the column right away, and he would never do art for the game again.
The "legal reason" is likely some bureacracy of Wizards that deals with when you're allowed to work and when you're not, because of them handling "confidential" materials (future sets in design). So very likely, his decision to leave caused some awkwardness with respect to that.
He spells out why he left pretty clearly. By which I mean, he says flat out he left for the wife and kids. A very respectable decision, even if I think they're crazy for wanting to go back to Ohio.
The Legal Trouble has shown up a few times with other authors too, IIRC. It deals with who can see what privilaged information when, and what sort of work they're allowed to do for Wizards at varying points.
Fact of the matter is, its more pointless beurocracy from the desk of WotC. They seem to be increadibly over-fond of their law branch, especially in the past few years.

corporations have legal fetishes for reasons that aren't obvious to most people. it rarely has anything to do with their products, marketing, or really anything that interacts with the public. generally the concern is from internal liability, meaning an employee (or former employee) with a grievance and an actionable position. the second concern has to do with clauses of non-disclosure agreements almost all companies makes with their employees. basically, the company doesn't want its employees discussing certain aspects of the business except in an officially approved sense. as soon as a person stops being an employee and there contract is terminated it becomes very hard to enforce the non-disclosure agreement they used to have. once again, the concern is internal, and has to do with the behavior of the former employee (for example, if he goes to work for a competitor).
none of this has much to do with the consumers which is why nobody ever goes into any detail about it. Cavotta seems like a stand up guy and is very unlikely to cause any problems for Hasbro but they still have to act defensively just in case he wasn't a stand up guy.

That's just what people say when they want to exit a public position with no questions asked. It doesn't mean anything scandelous happened or didn't. It's just a way to leave quietly.
if he was fired he wouldn't have done 4 months articles in advance. He left WOTC's full-time employ and legally wasn't permitted to have anything to do with the company for 4 months. From what I read, he's back to freelancing for them again now, which if he'd been fired, he wouldn't be doing.

Seriously, it's probably some obscure bureaucratic law or something preventing him from working as an artist and head of creative and stuff.
