I feel so betrayed that they admitted that Steamflogger Boss was a red herring, and have no plans to print Contraption cards.
MaRo (or should I say "Venser..."?) has promised that there will indeed be another YMTC, so let's overload the votes with various Contraption ideas and force their hand into creating them.

No, we don't need Contraptions. And face it: YMTC sucks because the community as a whole fails in terms of card design.
- First YMTC - Forgotten Ancient: Well, we made the card, but then it was Wizards' turn to crapify it into oblivion.
- Second YMTC - Crucible of Worlds: The only decent card which was designed in YMTC so far - however, it was meant to be protection from LD instead of being repeatable LD with Wasteland & friends.
- Third YMTC - Vanish into Memory: This time, we didn't really make the card because our options were extremely limited. Designing a card just by choosing an art is bad - really bad. We also had no real influence on the mana cost which gave us a gurantee that this card was going to suck - and so it did.
Exactly... and besides why would we want to waste our precious vote on something just to interact with a junky card?
I for one am all for it. I have pulled way to many bosses to not want something to go with it. THink about it.... If we make the card, it can be what we want it to be and not necessarily crap.
example:
Goblin Rigger R
creature - goblin rigger
assemble - 2, tap: put a 0/1 artifact contraption token into play.
1/1
Hurried Rigger 1R
creature - goblin rigger
Contraptions you control have haste and sacrifice this creature at end of turn.
assemble - 2, tap: put a 0/1 artifact contraption token into play.
1/2
Angered Rigger 2R
creature - goblin rigger
Contraptions you control have +2/+0.
assemble - 2, tap: put a 0/1 artifact contraption token into play.
2/2
That is just a simple example. there can be a card created to enhance any aspect of the boss.

One out of three YMTC being a Legacy/Vintage viable card, and another (Forgotten Ancient) being a colorless mana less away from being heavily played is NOT evidence of failure on the part of the "fan" designers.
What designer wouldn't be happy with those numbers, Barook?
Besides, obviously each and every YMTC will be completely different.
What I'm suggesting can work both for those of us who think contraptions could be truly cool and innovative design space, as well as for those of you who just want to stick it to R&D.

So what if the contraptions was considered a red herring and will be useless. The next YMAC should be something as usefull as CoW not as horrid as the rest of the ideas we had so far.
And the nick name of the next YMAC should be Named Sean Connery.
Well as for contraptions I thought about the TS thallid type direction and heres a nifty idea:
Precarious Boater 1R
creature - goblin rigger
tap: put a colourless artifact sail token into play
rr: put a colourless artifact hull token into play
3: put a colourless artifact deck token into play
0: assemble a Boat contraption with "All riggers, have islandwalk" from a sail, a hull and a deck token
I made the abilities seperate so that other riggers can use the parts to assemble stuff. I think it would be GREAT to have a YMTC rigger. It is a good idea and should have a use more so than the coldsnap one.
Do we have to? Honestly, the Stemflogger was not all that interesting of a card. I'm not saying that contraptions aren't interesting. I'm just saying that we shouldn't be shocked it was a red herring from the start. The reasons are obvious; for contraption to work, we would need two new terms: contraption and assemble. now when was the last time they added two words for just one ability? personally, i would just leave the card as is to represent a remembrance of a time when R&D decided to print WAY below par obsolete rares. This card would of fit right into Mercadian Masques... and even then, it still would be one of the crappier cards.
If contraption was made into an ability, i would have to expect it to be quite innovative. Many of the suggestions for contraption posted do not work. There is no true reason to use the word "assemble". For example, in Greenliness' mechanic, why couldn't he use an existing phrase such as "sacrafice hull, sail, and deck tolen: put a boat contraption with "All riggers have islandwalk into play."
If the YMTC is very popular, it might motivate wizards to make more riggers and contraptions. The problem is that most YMTCs have been very bad. I hate crucible or worlds, am indifferent to forgotten ancient, and hate thhe last YMTC from coldsnap. I don't even think wizards will let us make a card with contraption that is a creature. It looks as if the next YMTC will be a land. That is unless it is an artifact or enchanment, which I find highly unlikely.
I admit I would love to see a rigger for the YMTC, but there is no way I would let it be the case. Riggers need to exist in an environment where there are more than 2. YMTC generally creates a single card (this is not to say that we wont create a cycle in the future is a big call) 2 riggers still wouldnt be fun. If there is another YMTC I would try and vote for something that could be used, rather than something to prove a point.
Exactly!
But that's all the more reason to force it. They would be printing a stand alone card that will need lots of little friends in order to be very useful, thus punishing them for Steamflogger. Or rewarding them for Steamflogger if they actually do the design work that Forsythe so flippantly dismissed.
YMTC is our only direct line into making real cards. I'm hopeful we can give a more than a wee nudge, but instead a strong push for them to build around.
The truth is that if we voted some contraption card into the Development Stage, they'd just nerfslashkill it then, but at least we'd have tried.
BTW I agree that contraptions and their assembly will need to be innovative, and that we haven't yet come up with amazing designs...but there's still time. They haven't even announced YMTC4 yet.

I was actually planning on submitting a contraption card to YMTC 4, if it happens. Here's my thoughts:
*Contraptions should be tokens, but not creature tokens. This is cool, because non-creature tokens have never existed before in Magic (I think.) They will most likely be artifacts.
*I think there should only be one generic contraption type, not many specific types. Two reasons: 1) It would be very hard to keep track of multiple types of contraption tokens in a dedicated contraption deck, 2) Steamflogger boss says "assembles two contraptions" not "assembles two contraptions of the same type."
Based on these, I see something basic like
Pyrite Engineer 2R
Creature-Goblin Rigger
T: Pyrite Engineer assembles a Contraption (put a Contraption artifact token into play) R, T, Sacrifice a Contraption: Goblin Rigger deals 2 damage to target creature or player.
2/2
This thing would probably be too good in limited, but it's a start.
EDIT: For all those hating on YMTC results, wasn't Spiritmonger really the first YMTC card?

I'm a mathematics postdoc researching evolution and complex systems. Learn about these ideas here!
Zapbot Rigger 1R
When Zapbot Rigger comes into play, but four Salvage counters into play.
When a Contraption you control goes to the graveyard from play, deal two damage to target creature or player and put a Salvage counter into play under your control.
Assemble R: 2 (R, tap: Remove two part counters you control from the game. Put a 1/1 Contraption with haste into play under your control. Sacrifice it at the end of turn.)
2/1
It seems complicated and takes up space, but it's fairly intuitive. I would like to include the rigger's power somewhere in the ability, to make use of the +1/+0, but I couldn't think of anything (perhaps they use X-power tokens when they Assemble something? Stronger riggers build more easily?). Notice that this rigger makes Shock critters. The more riggers you have, the more powerful the bots. They would all have a "When a Contraption you control leaves play..." ability, or give pt or ability bonuses.
Is the Salvage bit too complicated or messy? They'd be just vanilla artifacts, and I like the idea of the riggers coming with physical parts that fall apart as they get used. You could have them come into play with part counters, but that isn't as cool as a big pile of junk that they build little critters out of.
I hereby vote that Ornithopter, Roterothopter, and Thopter Squadron be errated to be Contraptions.

Everything is true in some sense, false in some sense, meaningless in some sense, true and false in some sense, true and meaningless in some sense, false and meaningless in some sense, and true, false, and meaningless in some sense. Repeat this 666 times and you will reach enlightenment.
In some sense. The only good fnord is a dead fnord.
I don't think you realize that you can only make one card... and that you would have to have riggers AND the new card to get anything done. Making two worthless cards. Terrible, terrible idea. It's just too narrow to count for anything.
Shouldn't contraptions be specific..contraption is too general like how about a mine Goblin Blastmaster:2mana::symr:
Creature-Goblin Rigger
:2mana:, : Assemble a Blast mechanism contraption(artifact token) into play.
:symr::symr:, : Sacrifice a Blast Mechanism token and deal 2 dmamge to target attacking or blocking creature.
2/1
Or perhaps each rigger produces a part token and you sac, them to either pout a contraption token into play or look for a contraption card from your library.
Like:
Steam Engine Forgers2
Creature-Goblin rigger 2, :Put an engine artifact token into play.
Assemble-Sacrifice an engine and a hull artifact token and seach your library for a jet juggernaut contraption card and put into play tapped.
1/3
or: Assemble-Sacrifice an engine and a hull artifact token and place a contraption artifact token called, "jet juggernaut" into play. Pay 1 and tap jet juggernaut and target creature gains flying and +3/+0 until end of the turn.
1/3
I have thought of this, perhaps if they get hundreds of card suggestions for contraptions they'll consider putting it in.
now the question would be this: Based on what's on Steamflogger Boss, how can we come up with a reasonable contraption maker that makes sense with what we have now, keep in mind, suggestions do not need to be red persay, blue riggers could be just as plausable.
From what I heard, the fact the text on The Boss indicates that there is no specific kind of contraption. idk if it really does or not, but based on that, i do have a plausable idea of a card:
Ornithropter Builder :1mana::symu::symu:
Creature - Human Rigger
All contraptions gain: ":symtap:: Target creature gets Flying until end of turn."
Assembly - :symu:, :symtap:: Ornithropter Builder puts a Contraption artifact token into play.
1/1
- or -
Bomb Maker :2mana::symr:
Creature - Goblin Rigger
All contraptions gain: ":symr:, :symtap:: Deal 3 damage to target creature or player."
:1mana::symr:, :symtap:: Bomb Maker assembles a contraption artifact token into play.
1/2
- or in a different vien -
Golem Maker :3mana::symu:
Creature - Human Rigger
All contraptions become 1/2 artifact golem creatures.
Assembly - :1mana::symu:, :symtap:: Golem Maker puts a contraption artifact token into play.
1/1
- and where would this thread be without a rigger legend, and a macguyver reference? -
Macguyver :2mana::symr::symu:
Legendary Creature - Human Rigger
Sacrifice a Contraption: Draw a card.
Sacrifice a Contraption: Macguyver deals 2 damage to target creature and 2 damage to target creature or player.
:symu::symr:: Macguyver assembles a contraption artifact token into play.
3/3
something like that. I suppose the only kink to work out of the system would be "How exactly would one word the assembly mechanic?" But the fact that you put a token that rigger could potentially use makes it very vesitile. And there is some space to explore with it, you can give the contraptions abilities, make them creatures, have riggers sacrifice them, or give creatures bonuses due to how many you have (i.e. "All creatures you control get +X/+X where X is the number of contraptions you control", or "If you control 5 contraptions, all creatures you control gain Haste and Double-strike.")
I'm sure there's some interesting things we could come up with, perhaps we as a group could help them see a way to make assembly and contraptions viable.
Wouldn't a contraption just be more than just "a contraption"? The contraptions must be specific, I'm guessing. It's like having creature tokens that are just creature tokens not a specific type of creature.
