Tune into "How to Make Friends and Influence People" next week, when EclipseAgent will tell us how to persuade your Muslim friends to eat a ham sandwich!
well, counter-based decks will be slighlty better, what is more important is the banning of disciple of the vault, it makes affinity less explosive and might open the format up post-rotation.
...WTF, mate? WHY DID THEY BAN DISCIPLE!?!?!? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
I hate you, Wizards.
Anyways, guess we get to see Chrome Mox instead of Aether Vial from now on in aggro, and affinity gets its main out lopped off before anything even starts. Yippee skippy.
yeah - obviously I disagree with you, John. Spam Warning!.....Amazing - even in a forum where posts don't count, there's spam. That proves that getting rid of the post-count won't help getting rid of spam! Thans for this excellent example! - Craven
well, disciple of the vault is banned too, so I think affinity is dead. Maybe go back to mantle affinity and just use plating with thopter, nexus and somber hoverguard. About Aether vial, the decks that used it were affinity, goblins, and cephalid breakfast/life (tell me if I'm missing any). As I said earlier, I think affintiy is dead, goblins will still be really good, and it probably hurts cephalid a lot, I've never played it so I could be wrong.
I just feel bad for all the goblins and weenie...[sigh].
By the way, this is speculation if we predict the effects these bannings will have of the formatt.

Well this is an interesting set of bannings/unrestrictions...
Extended:
AEther Vial - Seems a bit much if you ask me. It's a good card overall, and yes, Goblins would have abused the card to no end, but I'm still quite sure it was ban worthy. Well better to get it out of the format now then to suffer through a few months of rough beats I suppose.
Disciple- Takes the combo out of Affinity, bringing that deck down a notch. Sure, Affinity is still going to be a very competitive deck, but now it's just an aggro deck overall. Probably a good pre-emptive strike on WotC's part.
Legacy- Didn't they already state this before? Ah well.
Vintage- MoM is unrestricted. No real surprise, as it has been speculated this would be done for awhile now.
well, disciple of the vault is banned too, so I think affinity is dead.
Get a grip. Disciple is a great card when you draw it late game and already have Ravager and a ton of artifacts (or vice-versa) but until that happens it's almost a dead draw. Affinity needed some new maindeck slots to dedicate to Kataki and other post-rotation style artifact hate and now it has them.
As for Aether Vial, well, Affinity only had two 1-mana creatures to begin with and now it has only one, Arcbound Worker; by the time I read this, I'd already taken Vial OUT of my Affinity. Aether Vial's banning will hurt Goblins a LOT more than our mechanical friends.
Personally, I'm just going to run Bonesplitter in Vial's spot, Shrapnel Blast in Disciple's, and consider taking out Chromatic Sphere and Thoughtcast in favor of something more aggro-artifact-ish. Or you could go the other way, run Mantles, Spheres, full set of Glimmervoids, and run Qumuloxes so you still have a game after Kataki / Flux hits the board.
As long as you have Arcbound Ravager and 0-cost artifacts in the same format, you're going to have some form of Affinity. Disciple is just icing.

There are three kinds of people in the world; those that played Affinity and were good, those that played Affinity and were bad, and those that got their butts kicked by Affinity.
losing vial and the disiciple hurts but by no means does affinity need those two that much any way. i play affnity and i still beat people with out those two.

I agree. Affinity lost its reason to play the vial, and then the vial was banned anyway, weakenng other decks unnecessarily, hence making affinity relatively more powerful again...

But Disciple goes and not FREAKING RAVAGER......that's insane.
Well, at least they are only trying to tame the beast, not neuter it.

Except for the fact that the current controllish decks didn't run Vial, so they weren't weakened at all. Scepter Chant now has a lock that is physically impossible for most affinity decks to beat maindeck, and Rock still has its delightful Deed to run with.

Well I didn't mean all decks, obviously some players will go their own controllish way, but aggro was getting pretty fast with those vials running around, they were just too quick.
I guess the vial was defining the formatt to much into aggro, so I guess it had to go, for all the trouble it was creating. I am just sad to see it go like this. I remember when it was just a $.25 card that I got like 7 of just because it was good.....

Friend of satans minions are you
I agree without vial, goblins seems alot less likely to just dominate like it has, and I'm glad that my version of the rock won't have to splash red for it anymore; furthermore, any version of psychatog that has red in it is an abomination.
On a funny side note, my friend dropped psychatog from his psychatog deck, in favor of kagemaro in order to deal with gobbo's. Hopefully he can fix that now.

Your leaving out the fact that any good affinity deck runs multiple Pithing Needles maindeck. First turn, play Darksteel Citadel tap play Pithing Needle naming Deed or scepter.

Everything else- No real shocks here.
Goblins were fast but losing the vial slows them, too.
With no vial there are no end of turn meddling mage or kataki.
All in all I think it's bloody horrible. They could have taken something else from ravager and left the other decks more competitive.
So long, you uncounterable creature playing bastard! Long live the Counterspell!
And af for RavAffin, Losing the Disciple hurts some good.

I used to judge alot.
I'm glad Disciple went instead of Ravager as this will still allow Affinity decks to succeed but will prevent them from dominating.
