While she is reminiscent of Mairsil, the Pretender, usually these types of cards (like Experiment Kraj or Necrotic Ooze to name two) only grab activated abilities. DIY Seraph gets trigged, static, and maybe even characteristic-defining abilities! Only missing out on cast and enter-the-battlefield triggers (and attack triggers the turn that she "becomes" the thing).
Total side note but I like how people are discussing running this over itself.
Well, it has to be said that Kolaghan is clearly better than Kolaghan. Considering what BR decks usually want and how stiff the competition in this guild is, there is no way that I would run Kolaghan over Kolaghan! Kolaghan might make it in as the sixth guild card or so. Kolaghan on the other hand ranks several places below that.
It was so funny to me when they described this as a downgrade to the original Zurgo during the Pax East panel. I was thinking if this is a downgrade, they should really "downgrade" all legendary creatures. Haha.
My deck designing is quite concise at this point:
1. Come up with deck idea
2. Realize this idea is somehow fundamentally similar to another deck I have or that is commonly played in my group
3. Decide I don't want to disassemble one of my existing decks
4. Give up and do nothing
I don't see the point of this new shroud mechanic. It's strictly worse than Hexproof. Threshold is pretty bad too, Delirium is a much better mechanic and probably easier to activate.
Otherwise this card is a pretty neat guy. Dodges removal and grows into a Primal Huntbeast. 3/5
And watermarks! Seriously though, I would love to have this black bordered for Sydri, Galvanic Genius EDH. Guess it's just a little too complex for that.
Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
Okay, so the article and y'all have mentioned good stuff and such, but how do we break Magic rules here? There's gotta be a way, that's why they've avoided this effect in black border.
*Transmogrifying Licid, anyone? I don't think this breaks anything in particular, though. We need a way to make cards in the library into artifacts.
*Something like Ashes of the Fallen can be on the field without choosing a creature type, but that could already happen with, for instance, manifest + Donate + Break Open.
*Unfortunately, exiling something with onecard and then trying to get it back with eg Clone Shell won't work -- Shell and its ilk make linked abilities.
*You could get eg Cryptolith Fragment to transform it, but nothing interesting happens. If you Mirrorweave a 2-sided card into a Seraph, then transform it, then nothing beyond wha tusually happens when you transform the other card, happens.
*Crystal Golem lets us phase out, I guess? This doesn't really do much.
At least there's shenanigans:
*Eternity Vessel for the suicide play, anyone?
*Knowledge Pool might actually be a legit decent play to protect yourself.
*Urza's Contact Lenses is an easy combo with pretty much any activate ability. That could be done before but it's easier now.
*I think the funniest option might be searching out a nice variety of equipment (Godsend, Grafter Exoskeleton, Helm of Kaldra, etc) and play something to make them not be creatures and thenBludgeon Brawl to make the most epic equipment possible.
*Actually, on that note, if you search out Sword of Kaldra, Shield of Kaldra, Helm of Kaldra and Spy Kit, and have Brawl/other card, you can make Kaldra from 1 single equipment!
*Although, of course, searching out all 4 parts of theMirrodinStationcombo is surely the classiest choice.
