When I make my decks (I mostly play casual), I usually stick to those sets anyway, unless I base my deck on older cards It would be nice to be able to have tournament in that Format
If this does happen for real, I am so looking forward to Vial-ing in my Scions, my Spellstutters, and my Sowers.
Vial really isn't that great in Faeries. Not saying it would be bad, but I'd rather Vial in Stoneforge Mystic & Mangara (see Legacy Death and Taxes) than Vial in creatures that are already played at instant speed.
In any case, if this becomes a "real" format, it'll be incredibly fun. The ban list looks pretty good to me so far.
Just thinking from my head of viable decks in this format has me excited...
Aggro/Midrange
Jund
Green & Taxes
Naya Zoo
Doran
Big/All In Red
Bant Variants
Junk
Tezzeret Affinity/Tempered Steel
Teachings
UGR Goodstuff
Faeries
UW/x Stoneforge Control
4/5 Color Control
This isn't even taking into account a lot of the new archetypes that could/would pop up in here..
Thoughts on the "power" plays of this format..
Once again, aggro/aggro control decks will probably have to pass the "2 hp" checkpoint or they'll die to punishing grove.
Aggro decks will also have to pack enough disruption to be able to handle hypergenesis, scapeshift omens, as well as dredge.
Combo decks will be able to win quick enough to race a goyf, play over the top of Faeries, Cryptic Command, Remand, and other strong control options.
Control decks will have to be able to deal with Vial decks.
All decks will have to pack ways to remove artifacts due to Swords + Affinity.
Jund seems it would be really well situated in a format like this. Goyf, Confidant + Punishing Grove would give it tons of options in the current format.
Faeries would fall back to being dead to Punishing Grove combo in all likelihood, although getting Ancestral Visions back helps a ton.
Stoneforge Mystic decks will be a top deck, and considering almost all the cards from a Tier 1 Legacy deck (Green & Taxes) are legal in this format, I could see D&T variants being very tough contenders.
Combo decks will be strong for sure, but not busted like depths/thopter. Just the thought of all the strong cards in the format has me excited..
I can see this format having a lot of potential...
1) It a good mix of Control/Aggro/Combo (though all three did take a hit with the banned list)
2) Mirrodin/8th was when they really started to get the modern concept of the color pie, modern card design, and modern block design nailed down. (I know they started in mercadian masques but I think they finally got things settled in Mirrodin/8th.)
3) No reserved list, that means the can reprint things if necessary, though they most likely still wouldn't.
4) I think that the New card frames look better than the old one do. (NOTE: This is simply a personal preference not necessarily a real point, unless you agree with me, in which case it's a great point. :D)

Cube. The best way to play Magic. PERIOD. Come over and check it out. Also, check out my Peasant Split Card Cube.
The World of Pokemon RPG has been rebooted. Come over and check it out.
I dunno... I would say that Fae actual gains little/less than some other decks by playing vial. Historicaly, decks that can set vial at 1 or 2 and forget it(i.e decks with a low, sligh-esque mana curve) have been the most effective, whereas fae have a more diverse mana curve. Sure, flashing in a scion to counter removal, or a sower to effectively get a (free!) instant speed control magic seem like serious :o:o:o plays, but what happens when you draw the scion after the sower and your vial is already at 4?
I dunno, I don't actually have much experience playing vial, so correct me if I'm wrong here but I don't see vial breaking Faeries too hard...not to say it won't break something else even worse though:p
Also, more on the topic of this thread, I am super excited to finally have a real extended again! Lightning Helix, Bob, Shock-lands, mortify/peutrify! God I have missed Ravanica lol.
any thoughts on pyro-ascension.dec being playable in this potential new format? I know I have been dying to run lightning helix in a pyro build ever since I saw it:P
edit: Oh and I just read Cbus05's post above, punishing fire//Groove of the burnwillows! Love that combo.(looks good in pyro too^^)
Damn i guess more scapeshift valakut. Not really sure why chrome and jitte are on the list. No G. Troll, every block they printed for the past 3 yrs has a card that removes all cards from target player's gy. Relic and Tormod is what everyone uses in legacy/vintage against dredge, we dont even get ichorid.
I understand thopter/depths and maybe artifact lands - I guess metalcraft would be op?
If this format came into fruition in the real world, I'd probably sell all my duals/wastelands to buy ravnica duals and staples cards for this format. Seriously. This. Format. Look. Awesome.
On a side note, would it be wise to cautiously start buying duals now so that if/when this format becomes a reality (not saying it will, but just in case), I don't have to get ridiculously expensive duals? I wish wizards would have said "if this works well online, we will make it a real format" so I could purchase them off ebay tonight... Oh well...
Also, what cards from the Kamigawa set would actually be relevant in this format? They banned Jitte and top, the only other one I can think of is Gifts, but what other cards would you guys predict being played (for funzies, not for investing advice)?

I could see Kataki, War's Wage seeing play. Hm..Ghostly Prison maybe. I've been scanning cards on gatherer, trying to see what I would want to play if Modern becomes a reality.

I'm intrigued by this modern format. Wonder if this will become over extended as a new eternal format. The banned list is good for me. Interestingly enough though they only banned 5 out of 6 of the artifact lands leaving darksteel citadel alone. I agree with the banned list though; they don't want it to look like old extended where only top, skullclamp and affinity pieces were banned before the reduction in size. Hypergenesis is nothing when chalice of the void is legal.

I've already made mention of such a format coming out.
My only downside is there's no onslaught block so no allied fetches legal.
Curious to see what decks come out of this format. The lack of skullclamp and hypergenesis on the banned list means those both will make an impact, but the rest is up in the air.

Skullclamp is definitely there, it'd be so nuts if it wasn't! Vial is not however.
Errrr skullclamp is definitely on the banned list. WotC wouldn't miss banning that card again.
Also citadel not being banned makes a huge impact for metalcraft. It's indestructible; that's why the card is above most of the other artifact lands except seat of the synod and the vault of whispers which you need to cast spells with colored mana.
Overall like the format though. I just wish it was masques onward.

Why does everyone seem to wish for an overextended from Masques on? Does Masques have some amazing card from that block? Is that the block that has FoW or something? I don't know because I only started playing a year ago, but what is so special about masques onwards?
1. This format would instantly become my favorite format outside of limited.
2. I finally sold off ALL of my good modern cards over a 2 year period YESTERDAY! Pretty awesome job :/
3. I still don't care, Ill buy them all back at triple the amount for this to become a reality.

This guy, would either eat up several turns worth of mana to get a slow permanent that relies on your already have some board presence (after wasting said mana), or dies without generating any advantage.

It's kind of a big starting point for the current generation of magic players, and after the catastrophe of Urza's Saga.
Im not positive, but I also think that Masques was the first block not to include the reserve list.

Masques onward has no reserved cards. It also has some powerful cards like rishadan port, dark ritual, brainstorm, daze, food chain, and misdirection. It doesn't have force of will it has the watered down misdirection though, which is kind of decent. It's the start of modern magic IMO.
Overall wonder what the format would look like 5 years down the road though.
