An online event seems like a good place to test this format, especially since each of those sets had a proper print run length and area all already available.
I'm hoping it's will end up as an Eternal Format minus the Reserve List.
The ban list is so that a couple of decks don't just over dominate.
See that's what gets me. I get the artifact lands being banned and the Jitte. But sword and the golgari troll? Were these overpowered when they were in standard?

I predict the rise of Hypergenesis given its power in old extended and Affinity given the presence of both artifact blocks in a relatively weak cardpool.

I primarily play limited, so most of my spoiler season comments view cards through that lens.
They also did a "build your own standard" format (was it last year? or the year before) and we haven't seen that as a "real" format yet.

I just want people who redraft to admit this:
"I can't draft objectively unless I am able to guarantee that I receive at least 3 rares. I am also better than most average/new players so I want to make sure that I get the best rares and they end up with worse ones. I care more about the monetary value of cards than actually playing the game for decent prizes."
However, in today's culture of Justin Bieber, Jersey Shore, and Twilight, where every song on the radio, every program on television and every site on the internet is just another monument to the pinnacle of human stupidity, it's certainly not the worst thing that people could be watching.
See that's what gets me. I get the artifact lands being banned and the Jitte. But sword and the golgari troll? Were these overpowered when they were in standard?
The ban list seems very knee jerk-like, although I don't blame them if they're trying to have a good first impression on the format so this doesn't turn out to be a disaster at first.
Sad about Chrome getting banned, since I always thought it was one of the more balanced "free mana" cards in recent history. Lot of potential here, though I'm seeing some cards NOT on the banlist that worry me a little... here's hoping for a new format though.

Sword is stupid with Thopter Foundry. It gains as much life and makes as many 1/1 fliers as you have 1.
As for the banned list, I'd assume it'll be modified if Modern becomes a regular format. The Unified rule makes things a little weird.
Jitte being banned would only make sense in the context of Stoneforge Mystic abuse, but if that's the case, why not ban SFM? .
Jitte is probably banned due to the Unified rule, just like Chrome Mox. They just go in too many decks.
I like the sound of this format and really hope that they decide to implement it as a new eternal format for paper magic as well.
The banned list basically amounts to-
The decks they've killed:
1. Thopter Depths (killed both of the combos)
2. Counter Top (no top no counter top)
The decks they've weakened significantly:
1. Affinity (still has Darksteel Citadel and all the non land cards but the loss of the 5 colored artifact lands is huge)
The decks they've weakened partially:
1. Dredge (still has a lot of good stuff but looses dredge card which dredges for the most)
2. Combo (the loss of Chrome Mox slows down fast storm combos etc.)\
3. Aggro (the loss of both Skull Clamp and more importantly Umezawa's Jitte weakens any potential aggro decks)
All in all it would make for an interesting format and the bannings ensure that the best combo's and affinity are pretty much out of contention and weaken dredge to a more fair level.
With zendikar fetches and ravnica shocklands the mana would be great and decks like zoo would be viable. Hypergenesis and Faeries would also be good.

New skool Legacy Affinity uses mostly all non old skool ravager Affinity cards though... we could see that version flourish instead. It's pretty fun!
True Jake... now would be the time to buy your fetches AND Rav duals...
But I do suspect this might be a "just for fun" format for this tournament.
Announcing the formats for the 2011 Magic: The Gathering Online Community Cup!

Which explains modern magic, basically all cards printed with the new frame.
Awesome idea and I hope is goes past this one event.
I hope the format extends to paper Magic at the very least.
Did you mean untypeable?
At least decks will have the same card face, barring unsightly white borders and timshifted shenanigans.
Amusing that Golgari Grave-Troll is banned. Is that the first time it's been ousted from a format? I guess it's notable that Sword of the Meek AND Dark Depths are gone too. (And Chrome Mox, but not Arcbound Ravager or 1/1 B friend.) All in all, very interesting ban list.

Older Magic as a Board Game: Panglacial Wurm , Mill
Let's hope it goes somewhere.
Edit: I believe this tourney/cup/whatever is most likely a test to see if this format can go anywhere.
Seems like a cool format, actually. I'd be eager to try it out.
I wonder if old cards printed in new frames would be allowed? GoGo Mishra's Factory! (j/k)
Seriously though, it would be a format I would fully support as most of my decks fit perfectly.
I'm hoping it's will end up as an Eternal Format minus the Reserve List.

Nice to know that i can tell my friends that it's a real format now.
Golgari Grave-Troll is a strong Dredge creature.
Sword of the Meek, is one of the three card combo with Thopter Foundry and Time Sieve.
If Hypergenesis turns out to be an issue, it will see the banhammer.

As long as the prices of those cards don't skyrocket to some ridiculous amounts.
