And then your opponent laughs at you for bolting Jace instead of bolting the Coatl in response to pump, and swings in with a creature that gets stronger every turn, moreso if they have another Jace (Which, they will).
The instant speed matters a whole lot. Coatl, Bolt, Brainstorm in response. It is a whole lot worse to do it on your turn when the stack is empty
I have a card that trumps your Bolt. Vines of the Vastwood. We can do this all day but the fact of the matter is that Jace + Coatl is strong because Jace + Brainstorm is strong. Brainstorm on a stick is redonk.
You can't bolt Jace before they get to brainstorm, meaning you're wasting a bolt and they're getting a 6/6 beater.
You definetly get the beater. I didn't mean you don't get the ability. What I'm saying is that brainstorm as Jace's first ability leaves him open to that.
Coatl sees little to no play in Legacy because it's a 3 mana dude with no evasion that sucks if you don't hold onto Brainstorms to "Charge" him. Generally, the decks that are looking to play him need the Brainstorms to fix their draws, since it's hard to hit 3 mana without them - they play 17 or 18 lands.
Little to no play in Legacy, means pretty darn good in standard. (not that Jace=brainstorm, but still)
I'm pretty sure we will be seeing a solid G/U deck coming up. But, sadly, it will probably not be control

I dont think this jace will make U/G gro any good. Honostly its just to slow. What kind of threats would you run? If Coatl and master of wild hunt or sumthing are your only threats they will die quick. Not to mention getting a turn 3 coatl into turn 4 jace isnt exactly going to happen every game. Nevermind having a turn 1 heirarch.

True but we do not have goyf. We do have Coatl though and that is also played in Legacy. We don't have Brainstorm in Standard but we sure have something very similar and may be better in some ways.

That's right, Sage and the Coatl aren't that synergic, but both fit great in the deck anyway I think (in theory, that is :P)
Hmm, you are making me think that Both Sages and Jace, the Mind Sculptor could fit into a new/tweaked extended dredge deck, though ;). I hate dredge, but if they keep making cards like this I may have to switch.
EDIT: nm, sages wouldn't work as it is also a replacement effect and you have to choose whether you want that one or sages
Beautiful, just beautiful. I'm not so sure how well Jace will do in our super fast meta but I love it. I also would like to point out that one of my speculations was actually right for once.
