I was browsing a couple sites I use to find information on new mmos and such when I came across this video for The MMO Report. Seems innoccent enough. Until the guy started discussing Turbines 3rd mmo in the works. Yes, Turbine who does Dungeons and Dragons , and Lord of the Rings online. The host said theyre 3rd mmo in development is 'Magic The Gathering The MMO' I dont know if its absolutley true or not, or if this information has already been posted here in the past if its old for you guys or not. But there it is. Heres the video if anyone wants to check
Sounds scary. It could be promising, or just plain silly. We'll see when more develops. Basically we're just gonna have to wait for more evidence to make a better judgement call.
If it is true and they actually put a lot of work into it it could be good. I like the idea of designing my own planeswalker and traveling the Blind Eternities. I just wonder how they will properly incorporate MTG gameplay aspects into it or maybe they'll just skip that route.
Man that would be awesome, but the world would have to be huge, and it would take a lot of time making all those worlds like Ravinca, Dominaria, Kamigawa, Alara, and a whole lot more. If they did do this they would probaly only make Dominaria then have the other planes as expansions.
Wow. This would be amazing.
An MMO set in Ravnica alone would be AWESOME.
But yeah, they'll probably just limit it to Dominaria...although with their recent push of the 5 Lorwyn planeswalkers as flagship characters for the game who knows?

Id just like to point out that it was dubbed an MMO not an MMORPG so it may not be an rpg. It might be more like magic the gathering battlegrounds..which would be interesting with more card options but still sort of blegh
I doubt they would call Duels of the Planeswalkers a MMO. Duels is definitely nothing close to what a MMO means.
Otherwise you could call Starcraft a MMO or Counterstrike an MMO.
Anyways I assume this will be similar to a normal fantasy type MMO where you just go around beating on things. I really doubt they will put you in the shoes of power level shown in the card game.
Also odds are they will just start with Domiria then maybe have expansion packs for other planes and areas. So eventually you might be able to head to Ravnica.
No way in heck do they have every single area ever shown in magic open from day 1.
Having watched the link video I can safely say that the comment about a Magic MMO was simply a joke. The commentator asked what could possibly be a nerdier follow-up to LotR and D&D, he then answered his own question with "Magic: The Gathering MMO"
Technically MODO is already a "Magic the Gathering MMO" so hopefully it will be an RPG. If Turbine is doing it, looking at DnD online and LotR online, it will likely be an RPG.
Asking out a girl is like trying to cast a first turn Necropotence. Sometimes the other player will have the Force of Will to say no. You shouldn't let that stop you from trying it.
my guess is we'll be playing the part of planeswalker. then that "teleport" feature you see in games will make more sense (planeswalking?) after seeing those comics, you'd figure they'll try a proper computer-based game too.
If this is true, I doubt it would very similar to the card game except in a general flavour sense (and probably with powers with the same name as spells from the game). Also, the players would have to be planeswalkers (of the new type), that is the only thing that would make sense for a game like this.
However, there is always the risk that would feel too generic fantasy, it would need a good hook to pull people in (just like World of Warcraft needed something to distinguish it from the games that came before it), and it might work or it might not, there really is no way to know right now.
Otherwise you could call Starcraft a MMO or Counterstrike an MMO.
I assume Counterstrike an MMO. But I run on servers with around 64 players on at a time. 64 is "massive" for me. Imagine a 64 player Magic game... Not an MMORPG (but I don't think there are ANY MMORPGs, to be often, as I have yet to see an MMORPG where people actually roleplay, aside from a minority of players so tiny they don't warrant the "massively multiplayer" part of the title).
I've been saying a mtg mmorpg or mmo would be awesome (Id actually like to see it as mmorpg) They have some much good material to work with, and art inspiration is endless, mtg has long captured the cream of fantasy ideas into its settings and would be a rocking mmo, It would be kind of cool to have joint mtgo and mmomtg accounts that gave each other bonuses.

I guess they could make players the new watered down planeswalkers at the most powerful. But don't expect Urzas power level in my opinion that is what you can unbalancing.
Especially if everyone was as powerful as Urza at max level the game would make no sense.
The mention of micropayments is rather dubious, either theyre going to make it like those really bad mmos where you have to buy your gear for real $ and however pays the most gets the best stuff or It's going to interface directly with mtgo collection accounts. Basically you would wander around having to play matches against various bad guys and you'd be able to build your deck at rest spots with whatever collection you own, and the game would just have the micropayments so you can buy packs and crack in the mmo directly. Some areas you'd only be able to use cards from a certian block to promote buying of new block cards ect. It could be really cool if done well, or a total shame.

I think this is called Guild Wars. But actually, GW has a lot of features that would do well in a Magic MMO, namely, a limited skill bar and modular campaigns (i.e., different planes for a Magic MMO).
Sounds cool in any case.

if they make a mmo for MTG i hope it takes a lost kingdoms type game, where you play spells from a deck, for those who have played it they know what im talking about

And was the Magic license actually attached, or were they just speculating what property it could be?
Sounds like Magic: the Gathering to me. :3
