With such a high number of Devoid cards, Protection wouldn't have been especially relevant this season anyway.
And yeah, Protection isn't a great mechanic. It makes for non-interactive play, and it's one of the most consistently confused mechanics for new players. I think I read somewhere that, while they aren't abandoning it, they are stepping back from it a bit.

Yeah, Goblin Piledriver was in Origins even though protection wasn't evergreen for Origins. I personally think protection would be interesting this Standard, as it would have lots of play against the tri-color cards, but be hosed entirely by the Eldrazi.

Onering's 4 simple steps that let you solve any problem with Magic's gameplay
Whether its blue players countering your spells, red players burning you out, or combo, if you have a problem with an aspect of Magic's gameplay, you can fix it!
Step 1: Identify the problem. What aspect of Magic don't you like? Step 2: Find out how others deal with the problem. How do players deal with this aspect of the game when they run into it? Step 3: Do what those players do. Step 4: No more problem. Bonus: You are now better at Magic. Enjoy those extra wins!

Weird how having more creatures with protection agaisnt colors woudn't be as powerfull because of devoid and certainlly would make the colorless theme more relevant

How about Protection against noncolored?
Opposite problem. Makes Devoid a downside, while it was designed to be either neutral or an upside.

If you're worried about "a future where all we do is turn creatures sideways", then why are you bemoaning the loss of an ability that helps you turn creatures sideways?

Turning creatures sideways has been a staple since Magic was created (Seriously, the "Magic is all about turning creatures sideways now" meme has gotten old like five years ago.)
Also, Wizards has said that if they finally end phasing protection out, they will probably replace it with some similar but more simple ability.
I don't think they'll ever entirely get rid of protection, they just said that it will be losing its evergreen status, which means that it is no longer an abiltiy that they feel they have to wedge into every set. It is too confusing to a lot of new players to put on cards that are at common or uncommon rarities, so it will be limited to rare and mythic rare cards from now on. I think the biggest effect this will have on sets is the disappearance of cards like Stave Off and Gods Willing and they replaced those cards with Enshrouding Mist and Lithomancer's Focus in the most recent sets without anyone complaining much.
Protection has 3 main problems:
- It works un-intuitively
- It randomly hoses entire decks, like landwalk
- It promotes non-interaction
Of course if you know the rules, you understand it, but that doesn't make it a good mechanic, people fail to understand that basic principle of game design, even if an enfranchised player understand how the mechanic works, it doesn't mean it's a good mechanic, and the fact that you like a certain mechanic/strategy, doesn't mean everyone else likes it, the best for the game is to have a balanced interactive environment, and those strategies/mechanics should be promoted over others.
So yeah, protection isn't evergreen anymore, it hasn't been completely phased out, but they dialed back for the reasons stated above.
So if this is all true, then why did it take them over 20 years to realize this? Protection has been around since Alpha/Beta. It has worked in Magic for 20 years...and now they are saying it has it's issues? Even landwalk....I love landwalk. It's part of the game. Next thing you know, they'll have yellow and purple mana....We can call it Pokémon Magic.

They've known that it has it's issues for a long time, they just haven't found a good replacement for it, as it's been stated before, they are not removing it, just dialing it down, if and when they find a suitable replacement, it will probably be completely phased out.
protection, land walk and intimidate were all downgraded/removed because they created noninteractive situations, but inconsistently. I.e. my Islandwalker is nutz against a blue deck, and okay to over costed against non blue. Note that things like menace or hexproof don't hose a player choosing a particular color, but they are more/less effective depending on the strategy your opponent plays.
Protection had the added mark against it that it was non intuitive in some cases ("Why would my creature die to your Wrath of God, it has Protection from White?").
Gods Willing type cards can be replaced for the most part with "Target creature gains hexproof and indestructible until the end of turn." and the only functionality lost is removing and already attached enchantment.
I think protection would have been fine. There is Devoid that flat out ignores Protection. Although they would have probably to have make some of the devoid removal a bit better (most of it is sorcery speed, narrow or overcosted).

To the people that say that a card needs to be a higher rarity because of Limited... I hate you guys so much. I present to you with this.

It would also need to become unblockable, as that's another (potentially confusing) aspect of Protection.

It doesn't work that way. Magic the Gathering has NO other competition. There isn't a card game in existence that even touches it, so I'll continue to play until it goes off the deep end....or something of that nature.
As for my 'turning creatures sideways' comment....all I meant is that I don't want Magic to become a game that requires less thinking and instead just dumb luck at drawing the right creatures at the right time. 'Protection' is one of those things that requires both the person playing it and the person who 'may' be playing against it to really think out their deck building. Think of Modern for example....There are modern staples that have protection, or hexproof, indestructible, unblockable, etc, etc. A lot of thought has to go into building a deck for Modern if you plan to do well. Anyone can stuff good creatures in a deck and hope to draw better than their opponent.
The other day, I was playing Modern, and came up against a fast white wheenee deck. I just happened to be playing 4x Phyrexian Crusader in my deck. It didn't go well for him, but if he had sideboarded Wrath of God or maybe a Celestial Flare or something like that.....it's all about preparing for anything when deckbuilding.

Sure, but its not like wizards is banning protection. That same game play will still be a thing, it just largely won't be a thing in standard where sideboard options are far more limited, and a good protection from [blank] creature/effect can single-handedly eliminate an otherwise viable deck from the format.

Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.

But it hasn't, at least not well. It is one, if not the most consistently played wrong mechanics in Magic.
Even if you know how it works, it's still a superweird mechanic, because it doesn't exactly do what you expect it to do.
