We get the return of painlands. Yamivaya coast, Shivan Reef, Llanowar Wastes, Battlefield Forge, Cave of Kalos.
Yay or nay?
I think this is great we get painlands, It is better than checkland because we can just essentially spark jolt ourself 1 life instead of coming in tapped. But we still get dealt 1 damage, overtime that means a lot.
It does make it an interesting format to come that's for sure.
Have to admit I was surprised, I didn't think we would be getting duals in m15, especially with both Sliver Hive and Urborg in the set. The article spoiling them said that they still wanted to print complete sets, does this mean Tarkir will have a set of 10 as well? Or did the part about making sure the colors were equal mean that Tarkir will have only ally colored lands, which would create a problem when m15 rotates out. Last time they printed half of the set in Innistrad and reprinted the core duals to make them rotate out simultaneously, it seems like it would be a pain to do that again. Maybe it's justified because no deck really wants painlands and scrylands, so they can afford to have 2 and a half full sets of duals?
You played JESUS?!?! I heard none of his guys stay in the graveyard, and once you think you have him beat he ALWAYS comes back to win within three turns. I like...WORSHIP him.
So, if Magic 2015 only has five lands, how will Standard cope? Have we changed our thinking on dual lands?
The answer is no—the statement I made last year is still true—our hope moving forward with Standard is to make sure that players have the mana base to make their decks work, and part of that means that players in Block will also have adequate mana. It probably won't come as a surprise for you to find out that Khans of Tarkir has a cycle of dual lands—the last Magic fall expansion to not have a set of dual lands was Mirrodin (although, I will admit that Time Spiral's charge lands left quite a bit to be desired in terms of actual mana fixing). We still plan on letting players cast their spells. We are just breaking things up a bit again.
Painlands are a strange choice. They took them out way back because of the feelbad for newbies. Maybe Tarkir's duals are a big deal, so they're sparing us the $ cost of buying necessary core-set duals, so that we can buy the Tarkir ones instead.
What's even stranger is that they only printed enemy colors potentially restricting playability. I would expect that w/e lands they print in the next block, the first set of the block will have the friendly lands.
Just seems silly. If painlands are there just to ease the transistion and eventually be overlooked as Tarkir block is in full swing, it would have been just as easy to print the other 5 pain lands.

Indeed. I would love to have the forest one for the new Nissa. And I'm sure the Modern Merfolk deck would love to have an island one.

I have often dreamed of such a card existing someday. There is NO way that they would ever print one for either U or G though (and it would be a great maindeck 'hate' card against Choke. Go ahead and play your enchantment!)
On topic however I think pain land were a great reprint (:

I actually think that just these 5 make sense. RW, GB, and UR all need the lands untapped to be effective (as a pacing issue). WB and GU also suffer on pacing and have not been that strong, so getting the lands helps. BR, RG, GW, UB, and UW are all much stronger right now, so don't need the support. Would I have liked the other 5, absolutely. But WotC printed these 5 for balancing purposes, and I think it makes sense.
Checklands are a fairly recent invention all things considered when they have been in four coresets. Before checklands, 5,6,7,9,10th all had allied painlands (9 & 10 also had enemy), that is five coresets. If Magic 2015 were to be included to the count, this is sixth coreset with painlands. Not including that allied painlands were also printed in Ice Age and that enemy painlands were printed in Apocalypse.
Will I play with painlands for standard? Yes. Am I happy with playing with painlands for standards? I am on the fence for this one. On one hand part of me agrees that painlands are a wiser decision from a tempo/aggro perspective as long as I have a means to regain life. On the other hand part of me wonders about how much life I can afford to lose in any given match if I run these and how costly it could end up and if I lose tempo/handfuel how badly will it bite me in the current environment.
tl;dr: Decisions. Decisions.
Painlands read badly but play well. I'm glad to see them again.
Edit: Enemy Scars fastlands would have a big impact on Modern, I want to see it happen one day, but with the whole 10-cycle in Standard. Would be one hell of an aggro-friendly format.
seeing that they say take one damage to tap for a color makes ppl think youll be taking alot but in later game once you get basics out, you just tap the painlands for colorless and take no damage. youll really only take damage the first few turns, considering you draw more land of course, but id say overall youll take 5-7 damage. which isnt any different then shocking in 4 shocklands which alot of ppl do anyway
The reprint of enemy pain-lands certainly raises the odds of seeing Onslaught allied fetch-lands in Khans, although I still think it's unlikely. But it would fit the needs of having both enemy and allied mana-fixing in Standard (of course, we already have that with scry-lands and Mana Confluence), and would accomplish the task of legalizing the missing fetch-lands in Modern.

Modern Merfolk?! How about every deck with blue in it? see: Vedalken Shackles
In any case, I'm happy with these only because I can use old Apocalypse ones. Otherwise, they're neither exciting or totally disappointing. Meh.

There are many monoblue decks in modern that don't even consider running Vedalken Shackles because it's simply not that good in the current modern format. Aside from Tron, most creature-based decks don't have any particularly valuable targets because the value of their creatures come from the sum of its parts.

Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.
Modern.
GBW Junk
GBR Jund
UG Infect
My 180 Modern Bordered Only Cube
So Tarkir will likely have higher power/profile lands than just 5 more painlands reprinted for the umpteenth time.
Multiplayer Decks- Memnarch - Animar, Soul of Elements - Zur, the Enchanter - Atraxa, Praetors' Voice - Food Chain Tazri - Teysa Karlov
