Power level doesnt excite me but flavor does and this set has even more so far then Innistrad. The god are a huge flavor hit, and basically every card spoiled has had great flavor. Along with that there is some goodies for standard.
PS Theros Block seems like its going to be AMAZING!
So far I can't see a single slam dunk card for modern that isn't a reprint.
Yes thoughtseize is awesome, but if the only modern cards are reprints then i'm only mildly excited.
Scry is a very very good mechanic that lets you actually do something other than play and attack with dudes so i'm holding out hope that there are gonna be some interactive/synergistic decks that will put scry to good use. If there are, i'll play standard again. And when I say interactive/synergistic i mean decks like POD, Delver, Frites. Not decks like JUND, GR aggro, Naya aggro,
I've always loved Greek Mythology and I was looking forward to the enchantment theme. But after seeing the cards spoiled so far, I'm not that high compared to when Innistrad and RTR were being spoiled. My biggest concern are the enchantments themselves, they're not what I've expected from an enchantment block. Still waiting for the other halves and hoping the next spoiled cards will have what I'm looking for.
But being an MTG fan this long, I'm not going to miss on Theros and hoping that the gameplay won't disappoint. If history has taught me, sometimes it's the unexpected ones that surprises the most.

Going back to Europe Tonight. will say goodbye to you all.
I'd say that when a card sees play in even one Legacy deck, it is pretty good.
I do have a problem with the set so far. The flavor seems good, but the power-level seems low. I want more playable cards for Modern, which this set doesn't have so far (reprints don't count). I know that it is unfair to judge the set so soon, but Monstrosity and Bestow are overcosted, Heroic is interesting but should have been made so it interacted with storm, Devotion doesn't work with Modern's 3-4 color manabases, and their haven't been any good scry cards so far (still hoping for a Preordain reprint and unban. Or at the very least an Opt reprint).
Agreed about Lilly. She's way too good to be talked about like she isn't a thing.
As for power-level, I think judging a set based on how many OP eternal cards it provides is just asking to be let down. They can't continually make cards like Delver, Geist of Saint Traft, and Deathrite Shaman every set. Power creep is just too much of a risk to ask that. I can understand how you're viewing the set through that lens though if you mostly play eternal with little/no standard.
There is a creature with one-hundred hands that blocks 100 creatures... Enough said.
I am really enjoying this set so far. While it may not come close to my favorite set/block, which was Odyssey, it definitely has potential to make it into second. Alara, is some stiff competition though.
I was really excited for the Greek mythology theme and the rumored Enchantment block, but so far this set just isn't doing it for me at all. A few cards are neat so far, I've seen a couple I'll probably inevitably play in Standard or EDH. But nothing has really made me go "WOW!!" yet. Nothing has made me go "MUST HAVE NOW". About the only two cards I'm really excited for are Underworld Cerberus (which I probably won't even end up playing) and Purphoros (because it might just let me build the enchantment control I've been wanting to make).
Lots of disappointment in cards, overall. Most seem overcosted to me, or just boring/predictable in what they do. Others are just annoyingly narrow (chained to the Rocks, Vanquish the Foul and Hunt the Hunted), and it looks as if the annoying rarity bumping is going to continue in this block. It really seems like flavor is taking precedence over playability, which is something I've always rallied against. Also was hoping Heliod would be a little more.
I'm not giving up hope yet, though. I'm still really curious about the unknown planeswalker, and definitely want to know what goatman does. There's still the mysterious dual lands, and the black God. Definitely excited to see what those do. I'm going to hope that Wizards has decided to not spoil all of the best stuff up front this time and have decided to spread it out more to try to keep the excitement going for spoiler season.
A few cards from the set that I do like so far:
-Curse of the Swine (just what Blue EDH decks needed!)
-Gift of Immortality (looks like a lot of fun)
-Master of Waves (Not sure if it'll fit into Modern Fish yet, but we'll see)
-Magma Jet (One of my favorite red cards)
-Rageblood Shaman (always love lords)
-Battlewise Hoplite (really efficient bear)
-Daxos of Meletis (boring art but kind of want to build an EDH deck with him)
Love everything from concept to art direction to the fairly fresh mechanics. Thus far seems really quite balanced for a new set. I was very concerned about the recent lack of mana fixing for the upcoming rotation, but it seems like it's all gonna work out just fine.
Excited as all hell about the set, it might be because I'm really really really bored of the current standard right now but Theros has looked pretty good to me so far... But I might be in the minority, I want to chain creatures to rocks right now....
There are cards I really like and will play a lot. I'm not sure if I will really like the format, though. This current standard is wide open, and therefore awesome.
Turn Two:
Gruul colored Land / Tap your two lands and Elvish mystic to play Hammer of Purphorous which gives everyone haste.
Turn Three:
Land / Tap three lands and Elvish Mystic and play Rubblebelt Raiders. It has haste and attacks for four. 3/3 +1+1 counter for 1 attacking creature.
Turn Four:
Your choice of Nylea God of the Hunt or Purphorous, God of the Forge. Because guess what...because of Rubblebelt Raiders, your devotion on turn four will meet both of their requirements to become an indestructible creature...WITH HASTE thanks to the hammer.
Attack for 12, 6 from the God of your choice, and Rubblebelt goes from a 4/4 to a 6/6 because two creatures attacked.
Turn Five:
Your choice, play the God of the opposite color you played last turn, or play Kalonian Hydra. Nylea already grants Rubblebelt trample and by the time your opponent figures out which one to remove, it won't matter, odds are they won't have two doom blades LOL.
Let's say you attack with all three...I believe because you have all three creatures attacking, Rubblebelt would get 3 more +1+1 counters and become a 9/9...add in Kalonian Hydra's ability...Rubblebelt would be a 15/15 with Trample if you played Nylea on turn four.
They'd want to remove Rubblebelt to decrease your devotion as their best bet...but the Hydra would be unchecked most likely.

Exava...nice knowing you???
Congratulations. You just discovered Magical Christmas Land.
as a new player, I am on the edge of my seat for all of this, loving the new flavor of it all. I got back into MTG after basically forgetting it existed for about 15 years, so I'm going back and learning all of the lore now. Looking back at all of it, I'm pretty sure I would have been the most excited about Zendikar and Innistrad, maybe the original Ravnica, but the RTR block was kinda meh for me. The guilds are cool, but its not hugely original or interesting. Theros, OTOH, is a whole new experience for me. I was hardly bored, yet its all very refreshing.
I see some EDH cards that I can snipe for Theros. But there is a lot of early jank so far. The red dragon actually has a decent monsntrosity cost and effect.

To the people that say that a card needs to be a higher rarity because of Limited... I hate you guys so much. I present to you with this.
Rather excited for the set.
-Really like Elspeth so a set with the heroes journey featuring her appeals to me.
-Like the setting, the whole gods being a real force within the world and the nods to our own stories.
-I think power wise the set's been fine so far and we still have a ton to go even if it's going to be a lot of commons in the near future.
Only Real Complaint so far are that enchantment creatures feel really Meh.

Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.

Sarcasm detection LOL?
Maybe I'm nuts, but hey...also forgot to throw in some Burning Trees.
that's pretty nuts, dude.
I think you can fit 3 of them into that scenario without needing card draw.
Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.
Supreme Verdict, just God of Nylea remains in enchantment form along with Hammer of Purphorous, Rubberbelt is dead, the control player Smirks...
Next Turn...
Burning Tree into Burning Tree into Purphorous, God of the Forge...back again....

Purify Innistrad!
