Was Pillory of the Sleepless really that good? And then they bumped it up to uncommon. Why wizards?
Pillory of the Sleepless was considered by many to be one of the greatest Auras ever printed at common (Faith's Fetters being another example of a great Aura printed at that rarity during the first Ravnica block).
Yes, it really was that good, so I'm not surprised they included a throwback to such an iconic card, upped the casting cost and bumped the power level up a bit. Kind of like their 2.0 Guildleader.
I participate yearly in a survival challenge in which I am dropped off in the wilderness with 1 days rations, a knife, and no other supplies, and have to find my way home. This is typically several weeks hiking from civilization.
I have personally killed several bears in the course of this challenge, with the use of snares and other traps.
Overall spot removal is being "nerfed" in terms of rarity, specially at cmc 3 or less. It's part of current limited design. They missed the mark with AVR but the direction is still this one.
As someone mentioned above, they want to balance the pick quality of removal and other kind of cards and the idea is to make removal bad. I still think it's weird once M13 had a great limited and had average level removal.
Pillory of sleepness = pacifism + B for 1 damage each turn.
1000 lashes = arrest + B for 1 damage each turn.
I'd say the cost blocking activated abilities is fair.
Plus, if I'm not mistaken, it also hits mana activated abilities.

"Each reality is but the dream of another, and each sleeper a god unknowing."
Either way, a good enchantment aura. It may/may not see Standard play (Pillory was in Standard because of Tallowisp), but if we do get some enchantment search... Oh boy. So many good cards.

I'm not sure it will, four mana is a bit too expensive for standard. Especially since Esper control (the deck most likely to play this card) already has a pretty stacked 4 slot. That said, if a good BW enchantment build comes into being over the next 18 months, it might see play. I just don't see it happening right now.
Still a broken card in limited and a good card in general.
I loved Pillow the enchantment, but new one is just to exspensive for current standard. Faith Fetters is better for the life gain, thus One thsand Lashes is just not that good in standard. I would jump for joy if this packed in limited though.
Obviously this card would be laughably powerful in limited at common. It'd push orzhov from contending with boros by pulls to being clearly the strongest limited guild.
How about "You may discard your hand, pay 5 life, rip this card, remove 3 digits from any number of target fingers you control, and concede at the end of the next end step rather than pay It Will Go Through!!'s mana cost.
Pillory wasn't stand-alone drafted and was very difficult to get your hands on several copies because of that, additionally, the rest of the block had much more removal options and lifegain options to mitigate that effect over multiple turns. In GTC, lashes can be a real timeclock, especially when backed by an army of extorting dudes

Counter target spell."

It's an Arrest that pings. In a Limited environment without blink effects, it's a good removal card for Orzhov.

How well do you do against one?

This is even better but costs more, I think it's fine. Shutting down activated abilities is a big deal now

So it does. Shame on me for not paying attention.

Maybe not yet but I think once Innistrad rotates out (unless the Friends block is designed to be faster than RtR of course)
