Are you serious? Have you not seen the prices of staple YGO cards?
Yeah...Magic is really cheap compared to YGO. I have talked to people who came from YGO and are amazed at how cheap it is to build a halfway decent deck. We have Mythic Rares, but we don't have Secret Ghost Super Rares.

Wizards are the ones 'setting' the prices by designing the cards and their power levels, and wizards the the ones profiting from it at the bottom line. It doesn't take an economist to understand something that elementary. The more obscene the secondary market is, the more packs wizard sells.
Except YuGiOh reprints staple YuGiOh cards in special sets that contain ONLY those cards. WoTC does not do this
And yet my friend showed me a deck the other day that was worth LITERALLY a grand. Not even tier 1. In the current environment. Shows how effective those special sets are at driving down prices...

I'm more and more glad I focus on EDH and casual play over competitive. I never felt the sting of Baneslayer's 25$ pricetag, and in all likeliness I won't have to deal with this guy either.
this card, at least in type 2, will spawn a new breed of ramp deck that is going to be devastating. Its remarkably easy to include him in any deck running fetchlands, but accomidating him just a little bit more, by including such cards as Birds of Paradise, Noble hierarch, or even harrow, and he explodes. Yes, he dies to removal. Unlike most creatures, however, that one turn in play isnt game-breaking. Violent ultimatium, Identity Crisis, or Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker on turn 2-3 is in most cases game over. Tarmogoyf swings for 3-6, and you still untap and can play. This guy, if he sticks, potentially ends the game on his own, on top of, in a worst case scenario, swinging for 2.
Makes me glad I do EDH, all I really want out of zen is one set of R/U fetches and a foil of that legendary octopus. I'm not going to even bother with those cobras, they wont ever be a reasonable price because of the mythic rarity.

assuming wizards is run by the same people who printed deutschmarks in 1923.
No, thats not how modern business practices work.
Ok i've got it! Turn three Identity Crisis, turn four calfner's plans and donate... beat them down with snake.
As for all this talk about the mythics and everything being related to Banslayer... You know what. Baneslayer was just a freak of nature, i mean the first strike really pushes it over the edge... that this is just a freak.
It's obvious to me now that Wizards has established the Mythic rarity so that they can shoehorn the best cards of every set into this new rarity level and ensure that each highly sought after "power" card will be $30+ and encourage people to buy boxes instead of simply buying all of their staples on the secondary market.
If this is what they are really doing, then why aren't the Fetch Lands in Zendikar actually Mythic Rares instead of Ordinary Rares... I think everyone would agree that of all the cards spoiled so far the Fetch Lands are in fact overall the best cards spoiled due to their ability to be played effectively in EVERY format currently, not this new freaking cobra. I highly doubt this Cobra will see play beyond either Standard or Extended anyways.
Yes, the lotus cobra basically confirms it.
It fulfills such a versatile role that it will be needed 4x in all green decks, all multicolor decks, all splash decks, all ramp decks, aggro, even control/etc. Turning each fetchland into a black lotus++.
I don't see this... The best you can currently do with the Lotus Cobra is the following
Turn 1: Forest, Bird
Turn 2: Fetchland, Lotus Cobra, Fetch something, suddenly you have three free mana on turn two.
Turn 3: Fetchland, fetching something, 5 mana floating, use 3 to Harrow, get 2 new lands, suddenly you have 6 mana floating. Play Terra Stomper.
Where as in Vintage you can do the following obscene plays:
Turn 1: Land, Sol Ring, Lotus, Mox... Wow, suddenly I have 6 free mana on turn one, all of which is available for immediate use. Play Terra Stomper or any other 6 mana broken spell(s) on Turn ONE.
Do you see how different these levels of brokeness are. The Black Lotus is infinitely more broken because of the fact that it immediately produces 3 colorless mana, and does not cost any mana at all to play. This is especially true when combined with various OTHER spells available to a person in Vintage. You simply CANNOT compare the infinitely slower Lotus Cobra to the Black Lotus.
The real difference between these is that the only card that absolutely is vital in the second example, is the Black Lotus, and even then it is possible to get any number of busted plays without it. Where as in the first example, you need to dedicate at least 18 to 19 slots just to the non-land cards on that list. Simply put, this is a great deal more specific and a great deal more of a "build around me" card than is the original lotus. The orignal lotus could very easily be fit into ANY deck. This new card can only really be fit into a deck with at least a modicum amount of green to abuse it with.
That being said, there's a difference between "budget players" and "players who don't want to spend $120 for a playset of a card".
According to www.magictraders.com, Baneslayer Angel costs 23.36 on average from ebay. If you are spending more than 100 dollars on a playset of Baneslayers, you are shopping at the wrong places... Additionally, Baneslayer is currently the only Mythic I am aware of that is breaching the 20 dollar mark on the market. So grin and bare with it.
EDIT: Additionally, I think this card is being WAY overhyped. It will not be nearly as good as people seem to think it is, simply due to its vulnerability. For one thing, this kind of card simply does NOT make the cut for formats like Elder Dragon Highlander where BIGGER is often BETTER. The main reason there being that it won't last more than a turn with all the fast removal played in that format.
Additionally it will only likely see play in Rock Style decks in Legacy due to it being an excellent replacement for the current creature acceleration that they run (Sakura-Tribe Elder) whom got completely neutered by the M10 rules. However personally I would still rather run the Elder than this card.
Further, this card simply is not fast enough to be played in Vintage where FASTER is BETTER. This card just doesn't have the level of brokenness to compete there.
assuming wizards is run by the same people who printed deutschmarks in 1923.
No, thats not how modern business practices work.
Uhhh not sure what you're talking about because it's a simple example of supply and demand.
The more snakes are cracked from packs the more of them hit the market. At first their numbers will be lower, so the prices will be high, however over time as more and more are cracked the demand will begin to go down and thus the price will... that's economics 101.
I do not believe just this one card will break the format, there is just too much relying on a frail body, although we have yet to see the last 130 something cards of zendikar.
The other big thing in the video games vs. Magic argument is:
Alot of people, like me, try to find 1-2 games and play them for months, even years. Buying a copy of Oblivion, for example, costs someone $50 or something, and he can get hours and hours of pleasure out of it. Same goes for World of Warcraft, except you pay $10 a month for it, which less than 3 packs of Magic a month.
Obviously there is the cost of the computer, and the internet connection, but you'll be paying for those regardless, because they are necessary parts of life in the 21st century.
So you have to ask yourself, why should I dump $200+ a month into Magic when I can dump $50 into a game once, and play it for several months if it's interesting enough?
Well, just switch to Legacy. Most of the decks exist for years now, with little tweaks here and there. Its the cheapest format to play and your cards arent losing their value after a few months.
It is certain that i would buy 4 boxes of zendikar and draft every weekend just for the fetches/mythics though. Wizards is laughing all the way to the bank for sure.
He is so man, he is mario, and I will tell my opponents such. As and when I bounce their permanent I will exclaim "MARIO" as though he were stomped on by our mighty Jace. Every time someone kill him I will give them 99 USD (not AUS!!!) because their lightning bolt should cost 100 DOLLARS...
Jace even made it into the Teenage Super Hero Mutant Ninja Hero Turtles.
You guys can't actually be surprised by this. Magic has been in 100% cash grab mode for awhile now. I mean honestly. They didn't print enemy colored painlands for years, because there was no reason to. But now they're printing them, in the one set where they probably shouldn't(fetchlands will probably put Landfall over the top as a ridiculous mechanic). When Mythic Rares started, it wasn't a big deal. None of the cards were particularly amazing, and even those that were, you probably weren't running 4 copies of. What we're seeing in M10 and Zendikar is what they really wanted to do with Mythic Rares all along. Put the top tier cards for each color into the mythic rarity. That way, they stick to their 'no utility mythics' bit, while still forcing you to spend ridiculous amounts of money on them.
In case you haven't noticed, they've also moved full on into 'cater to YuGiOh players' mode. They gave them free invites to Nats(or whatever event it was) last year. There are more creatures than ever, and the power creep on them just keeps increasing. Spells are at a low point. Oh and they added 'traps'. Hasbro figured out that YuGiOh parents have no problem spending a billion dollars on the game, and are trying to milk them for all they're worth.
Yeah...Magic is really cheap compared to YGO. I have talked to people who came from YGO and are amazed at how cheap it is to build a halfway decent deck. We have Mythic Rares, but we don't have Secret Ghost Super Rares.
Yugioh started in the same way too, with a single rarity over Rare (Secret rare) It took years for the new raritys to appear. It was a gradual process of power creep that led to how the game looks now days.
You're doing it very, very wrong.
For example. You cast your T2 fetchland after casting cobra.
This adds another 2 mana to your pool on T2, or you even save it, floating 1 extra mana T2, and getting an extra mana off it T3.
For example:
Turn 2: Cobra, Fetchland (+1 from cobra), sac fetchland (+1 from cobra), tap the land you get (+1). Now you can cast harrow (+2), tap the lands (+2), and you have floated 4 mana turn 2. Thats all with zendikar cards.
Using just birds of paradise & fetchlands with it:
T1: Forest, BoP
T2: Tap forest & bop (+2), cobra (-2), fetchland (+1) one mana free
T3: Fetchland (+1), sac 2 fetchlands (+2), tap 3 lands & bop (+4), 7 mana out there.
According to www.magictraders.com, the current average price for Elspeth is... 19.58 USD. So like I said, Baneslayer is CURRENTLY the only mythic I know of that breaches the 20 dollar mark. Elspeth is just a few cents under the 20 dollar mark, sorry dude.
See it now?
Neither of your Examples is at all busted. At least not in comparison to the stuff that is pulled off with Vintage cards. Sorry bud.
19.58 is close enough for the example to be relevant, especially when you're basing it off of MOTL prices. They are typically lower(because they pool from so many pricing sources) than you will usually see a card for.
At any B&M shop, you're not picking up Elspeth for less than $25.
Anyone who says this isn't "Backbreaking" is lying or deluded. Sorry, this thing is ri-di-culous. It will be played in Standard in everything, it will be played in Extended in everything, it will be played in Legacy in everything, and it will be played in freaking Vintage.
Everyone will want this, and it's going to skyrocket in price, easily eclipsing Goyf prices at their peak. And if you can't grab a playset of these, you're just gonna have to pack it up and head back to the kitchen table.
You guys can't actually be surprised by this. Magic has been in 100% cash grab mode for awhile now. I mean honestly. I suppose the issue is players holding WotC to a different standard, "they're better than that" mentality. Especially since it was clearly stated utility =/= mythic and that rule is already gone.

So truth be told this price is far more accurate than anything that you will find at a Brick and Mortar Store.
Also, the "Utility =/= Mythic" rule still is not gone. This card is hardly utilitarian.

Hurry up and buy Birds of Paradise before it's $50! It accelerates kind of like Lotus Cobra, but it only costs G! You can cast a 3 mana spell on turn 2, which you can't even do with the Cobra OMG!
Seriously. It is a Birds that can attack except in these situations:
- You play a fetchland. Here you have 1 extra mana than with Birds.
- You play a ramp spell. Harrow can net you 1 extra mana.
It is WORSE than Birds of Paradise in these situations:
-You don't have a land to play. This can actually happen! Birds won't ever whiff, but this guy can.

this is a valid point. HOWEVER, the point is, that the card this is inspired upon (the Black Lotus), is still infinitely more busted than this card is. Simply put, the fact that this card requires at least 2 turns (given a god hand) and on average 3 turns to really start ramping up the mana... and even then it is going to eventually peeter out of juice due to the lower availability of mana... is in no way comparable to half the mana ramping available in some of the older formats.
Add to the fact that this card is one of the most vulnerable types, with an extremely vulnerable body... and it makes it highly unlikely that it will even be around long enough to really ramp you a substantial amount of mana.

Also, it's not as simple as just saying 'they're just trying to make money and that's okay'. When you feel exploited, you feel exploited. It's not okay for someone to exploit you just because they can get away with it.

Also, it's not as simple as just saying 'they're just trying to make money and that's okay'. When you feel exploited, you feel exploited. It's not okay for someone to exploit you just because they can get away with it.
Unrelatedly to all of this, I do agree that people are overrating this card. It's a good anti-Control card..but uhhh..Control is terrible these days anyway. All decks anymore are just piles of guys. It's pretty discouraging. But w/e.
lol how is control bad. do you know what standard was like months ago?
