Alright, it's a grizzly bear with a relevant creature type. It's a common which serves as limited filler, but also gives new players a creature type they can build around. Why are people freaking out that "OH NOES WIZARDS PRINTED BEARZ IN A EXPANSION SET!!!!1111ELEVENTY!!"? Every set has limited filler. Why is a new grizzly bear suddenly the end of Magic, especially if no one cries like this over cards like Bloodshed Fever? People are acting like the set is nothing but grizzly bears.
The irony is also that Ethersworn Canonist is one of the best cards in the set, and it sits on a grizzly bear body.

What we're doing here is akin to taking the text of Moby Dick, locating specific words therein, rearranging them to create a passage from Fight Club, and concluding from this evidence that Tyler Durden is based on Ahab.
It does have quite a few vanillas besides that. I doubt anyone would complain if these were being printed in moderation
Sets always have vanilla creatures. I'd much rather vanilla creatures than crap like Bloodshed Fever or Toil in Renown.

People hate it because its unoriginal and takes up space, they could've just slapped some random ability on it, and that would've been infy times more original, but reprinting a universal card, thats also a universal term, seems like wizards just doesn't care. Ethersworn canonist can't compare to bears.
it could've had Devour 1 or something. Or cycling. They could have printed a card that makes you go "hm...", but instead they printed one that you can't skip past fast enough. There couldn't have been any reason for it, other than that WotC likes to kill trees and waste ink.

ah... don't we all. Down with trees! Down with octopii! Destroy the establishment!
changing the creature type to a relative creature is huge just like back when ashcoat was printed, or safehold sentry, or any multitude. They are just changing a couple or even just one little thing to give new people new options and these new options can't be printed in a base if they weren't printed here first!
I don't think its creature type is going to change anything, theres nothing tribal in shards except stupid dragon enchantment and ooze enchantment saying non-ooze
aside from being a dragon or an ooze, it would literally have no impact in limited, and elves will never play this in standard, vanquisher.
Take Somnomancer. It would be less fun if it didn't do anything, correct? Take Jhessian Lookout. It would be more fun if it did ANYTHING, correct? You really can't make a less fun card than vanilla creatures. Why are they still printing them? We only get 249 cards in this set so it should be just jam-packed with excitement AKA not Incurable Ogre and friends. Ah well what're we gonna do? Play magic thats what
We definitely could have done with less vanilla in this set, but my guess is they want to replace grizzly bears in 11th with a more relevant creature type.
Sheesh I agree Jeebus, everyone is freaking out over a few vanilla creatures, it's even worse because this "bear" is relevant and people STILL complain.
A good example is on turn three your elf could be a +3/+3 or bigger just from another creature, your bear will just be a bear... FOREVER! THERE IS NO BEAR CAVALRY! Tribal bears? I wanna see that. Bear deck wins? No.
Elves though, oh elves go places. New players like elves so if we give them a vanilla 2/2 elf with good art they'll be happier opposed to a bear with horrible bearish art.
This is most likely an 11th ed plant. They have to go somewhere. Regardless, why slap an ability on every creature? What's the point? To run through design space faster?

It's probably a core set plant. They have to plant it somewhere, and I'm glad they didn't edge out Woodland Changling for it. I think everyone would have liked some minor ability on it, (perhaps Elvish Berserker's "rampage") but oh well. (Sarnath'ed by Dr. J.)
It's a solid card in limited. It splashes more easily than Elvish Warrior for tribal.
BTW, Aethersworn Cannonist has a drawback in any deck that isn't heavy artifacts.
In EDH, Safehold Elite can't fit in some decks because of the hybrid cost. There's also the weakeness to protection nuance. But yeah, Elite is an exceptionally good card. But then, bears aren't designed to be acceptionally good, just adequate.
One last thought: G has been theoretically moving away from efficient weenies. I'm sure that was a design factor too.
Everyone is complaining about the elf, but no one says a word about Jhessian Lookout? It's a worse card, in a less playable creature type. And no one says a word, and just complain about the "bears reprint." Wow. Just wow.

I think the real card to complain about is Spell Snip.
It's strictly worse than Runeboggle (which is an already bad card), Miscalculation, and Complicate! (Ok, I know it's not 100% strictly worse than either 'boggle or Complicate because you can cycle it for 2 in any deck, but come on!)

I don't like vanilla creatures in my "expert level" sets. I'm sorry but if you have to put a freaking elf bear in the 2 drop slot you're clearly too lazy to think of something else.
Not Lazy Elf Bear 1G
Creature - Elf Scout
When Not Lazy Elf Bear comes into play target creature gains trample and +1/+1 until end of turn. If that creature has 5 or more power, it gains first strike.
2/2
Holy crap, did you see what I just did there? In my 3 minutes I designed something that is actually playable, fits the theme of the set, AND ISNT A FREAKING VANILLA DUDE!!!
ITT, people who don't know how to think for themselves much up conversation by not adding anything meaningful to the thread.
Again you should look at my post previous to yours. It has an example creature that could very easily have replaced LAZY DESIGN creatures. The fact is the design team is lazy. They could have made creatures that did something instead of just sitting there.

Or you could not complain and stop thinking you know more than the R&D team about how this game should be built. I do think for myself, you're the ones that seem to be led like sheep to the slaughter about how horrible a card is when in reality it's just bland.
Trust me I was the more disappointed in this card than ANYONE on the boards, because I play Elf-Ball in standard, and was hoping that maybe that one of the nine elf cards in the orb would help us out, and the only thing that comes close is Elvish Visionary.
The design team isn't lazy, it's smart, and they know what they're doing a hell of a lot better than you do. Like many people are suggesting, it might be taking the place of an even more vanilla card in 11th, so why not stick it in this set since it has the most room to spare anyway.
Also, in case you didn't know, it doesn't just sit there, it attacks and blocks.
God forbid we ever see another Goblin Hero or a Vizzerdrix, there might be a boycott of magic!

Because that creature wouldn't be broken in draft, at common. Seriously, there are a lot of different factors to weigh. Sometimes they screw up, but it's less often than most people assume.

Yeah, let's print a new grizzly bears now that we have obsoleted it a thousand times already.
To make it even better, let's make it the exactly same creatures types of a card printed a few months ago that is strictly better.
Woot for interesting cards that adds a lot to the game! Bonus points for it being in a smaller than usual set!

It's a splashable Elf. Much easier to cast and when Lorwyn cycles out we'll have a vanilla Elf.
