I must admit at first glance this set is pretty underwealming. There has yet to be a card that everyone must have. Toshi, seems like the only card that will probaby see some constructed play.
Then again, this is all compared to the previous block which spawned a broken affinty deck. So once Mirrodin rotates out, im sure people will re-evaluate this set, and find that it has alot of gems to offer contructed in the future.
I totally disagree with the first post. As we have gotten the full spoiler now, I will say that this set is going to be awesome. I mean in several different aspects this set beats out all three sets from the mirrodin block, at least to me. Flavor-wise this set has more flavor in a common then alot of the rares from Mirrodin block did. In the art department, the art I have see so far for betrayers is looking quite amazing. Also I would say that I havnt seen a completley un-playable crap card yet.
So in conclusion I would say that just because this set isnt on the power lever of something from Urza's block doesnt mean its crap.
I am looking forward to getting the cards saturday and enjoying a new set that looks quite awesome.
besides the whole Splice mechanic and "Spiritcraft," Ninjitsu (its spelled with an I not a U, kids, learn to f'in spell) is going to be an excellent mechanic in limited, and may well see play in constructed.
Learn to f'in read. It's spelled with a 'u' on every single ninja card.
oh well, everyone makes mistakes sometimes, and sometimes people flame.
Congratulations!

This is my Jackal Pup. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My Jackal Pup is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My Jackal Pup without me is useless. Without my Jackal Pup, I am useless. I must tap my Jackal Pup true. I must tap faster than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must beat him down before he beats me down. I will.
It seems more interesting than CHK was... the Genjus are nice, maybe the ninjas will amount to more than a lot of fun, Red seems to have gotten a significant boost with the Shoal etc.
well, i was definately much more impressed with the first half of the cards that were spoiled, but overall im happy with the set. there's a lot of cards that i want for my decks so ill be buying at least 2 boxes.
All I have to say is that every once in a while there has to be a homelands for an Arabian Nights.
Arabian Nights kinda...sucked (outside of like 3 cards)...so you're saying there has to be a sucky set for a slightly-less-sucky set?
Anyway, there is NO way you can compare BOK to Homelands. At least BOK will have more than 2 constructed-worth cards (and with 2, I'm being generous to Homelands).
I don't know, I like how Betrayer's turned out (every set has its crap cards, BoK's just happened to cost 5-6 mana :()
Of course if you compare ChK and BoK to Mirrodin block then its gonna look like a "low quality set", just as long as SoK and Ravinca don't repeat a Mirrodin block type power then I can predict that type 2 will be very fun to play

yes, i cant wait for post mirrodin type 2. there will be so many differnt decks and colors:D haha. everyone said darksteel was another homelands too...i personally loved darksteel, but not as much as i love CHK and BOK. at least half the rares in BoK im planning to use. not to mention so many uncommons, especially the genjus, they are too cool.
Guys the set looks bad cause you are looking for the bad cards, less than 1/4 of the cards in every set make it to constructed play, and about 1/2 to 2/3 get played even in limited. This set is going ot fine in limited, and will have at least some impact on standard, but every set someone pops up with a thread saying OMFG, this set is arse dont you think????? jebus this set is for n00bs!!!111oneoneexclamationpoint WTF???

If you dont get that, look at my username, and if you still dont get it, than your to young to have an account on here without your parents permission, YOU ARE A BAD LITTLE CHILD!!!!
It seems to me that the set might have a lot of hidden power. Cards that arent noticed until someone stumbles over there usefullness acidentally. I dont no which cards these will be, but I just have a feeling there will be quite a few of them.

Ink-Eyes, Servant of the Oni
Toshiro Umezawa
Yukor, the Prisoner
Ishi-Ishi
All these cards i am intrested to play, espicially Umezawa, his ability to give all your instants flashback is quiet amaving! We shall see after pre-release!
Speaking as a casual player, a "Johnny", I'm also disappointed in this set. It might be that I'm just tired of Magic, but it seems like more and more the new sets are just tweaks of everything else they've done before. They come up with some new mechanics to stick on cards, but then they all end up feeling like stuff we've seen before. Red burns. Green pumps and accelerates mana. White prevents damage and gains life. Blue bounces and draws. Black destroys and discards. It's gotten to the point where you can guess what the set will look like once you know what the keyworded mechanics are.
Like I said, it's probably just me playing for too long.
Admittedly, I ,too, am disappointed after seeing the set. I wasn't expecting anything bah-roken, but it's definitely below the power level of the past few sets. Mirrodin block made up most of those sets, mind you. So I don't think it's waaay crappy or anything, but definitely disappointing. There will be fun cards, as with every set, but mostly filler, IMO. However, as I have been saying, I'm kinda glad. I would really love to see an environment where any deck is viable. I do play Affinity, but I'm a rogue decker at heart, so if that means they have to bring the tempo of T2 to a screeching halt after Mirrodin [/exaggeration], then so be it. I'm looking forward to a slower environ where I can create a fun deck that will also do well on the tourney sceen.
What we're doing here is akin to taking the text of Moby Dick, locating specific words therein, rearranging them to create a passage from Fight Club, and concluding from this evidence that Tyler Durden is based on Ahab.
I'm looking forward to a slower environ where I can create a fun deck that will also do well on the tourney sceen.
It won't satisfy the "slower" criterion, but in terms of diversity, Extended is an absolutely blast right now. There are at least a dozen decks that can t8 on a given day. Obviously there's a tier 1, a tier 2, and a rogue tier, and every deck has bad matchups, but there's no 800-lb gorilla.
I think they're doing a great job of balancing sets these days. After the Extended rotation, only Entomb and Skullclamp will be banned, and I don't think Entomb will remain banned.

Caranthir: Have you taken a look at some cards from the Tempest or Urza's Blocks? Overall, they were certainly more powerful than Mirrodin's block.

Sing lustily and with good courage.
Be aware of singing as if you were half dead,
or half asleep:
but lift your voice with strength.
Be no more afraid of your voice now,
nor more ashamed of its being heard,
than when you sang the songs of Satan.
I think they're doing a great job of balancing sets these days. After the Extended rotation, only Entomb and Skullclamp will be banned, and I don't think Entomb will remain banned.
I also think the banhammer will be coming down hard right after the rotation, though. Remember, they don't have to ban current cards right now because of how diverse the format is, but when they cut out so many cards, it will shrink the format and cause less diversity. So, in order to keep the format diverse, they will have to ban some new cards.
I also think the banhammer will be coming down hard right after the rotation, though.
What cards do you think are candidates for banning? I think it's clear that Skullclamp should never be unbanned in any relevant format. Other than that, what do you think should be banned?

Brian Tinsman, Set Designer can only be cast during the third set of a block.
When Brian Tinsman, Set Designer enters the battlefield, ignore all flavor and mechanics of the first two sets in the block. "Ok so what do we have here... gothic horror? Scrap it. Expand the Devine Vs. Demonic duel deck to 244 cards and print it!"

As a casual player, I like the set. Mostly. The art is pretty decent, the flavor is still cool, ninjas are interesting, etc. There are a few bombs that look surprising. The one thing that bugs me the most is how overcosted Soulshifters are. I have not played with them yet, so maybe someone else with experience can explain otherwise. Raise Dead only costed B, so why are these Soulshift creatures 3 or 4 more than an equalivalent creature without Soulshift? Maybe I need to set up a Soulshift deck and give it a shot....

I think that covers the big ones. So what cards from those could be banned without completely hosing the deck? I'm thinking DotV is the first choice.
