Well, you need some cycles, its a fact of life man. As long as they are somewhat creative, they are pretty good. Like the echoes, that was definitely a good cycle, and the cards arent any worse just because they are part of a cycle. All of them have seen at least some play besides the white one, even if only in the sideboard of mir block decks.
I really like, cycles, as long as they dont overdo it. They help me remember certain cards, since i like building rogue decks.

Yeah, I think cycles are necessary. While designing, it's hard to avoid making a simple tweak and changing colour. I actually collect cycles. Personally, I don't mind them as long as every card isn't part of a cycle.
What we're doing here is akin to taking the text of Moby Dick, locating specific words therein, rearranging them to create a passage from Fight Club, and concluding from this evidence that Tyler Durden is based on Ahab.
For example, Glacial Ray is so great because it is not part of a cycle (and it's very powerfull...).
That's silly. You're saying 2 damage for 1R with splice 1R would be worse if it was part of a cycle? There is no objective way that is possible. Some people may not like it as much, but others may like it more. And the fact that you mentioned a popular card from a recent set as a non-cycle card is pretty clear evidence that not everything is turning into cycles, IMO.
Cycles are a fact of magic, wizards have 5 colours to work with and when they come up with a cool concept why not make a cycle to let all 5 colours use it.
Also just because a card is in a cycle doesn't mean its worse than a card without a cycle, you're talking about glacial ray as an example of a good card not in a cycle, what about lightning bolt then, arguably the best burn spell ever and part of on of the 1st cycles ever(the other ones were: blue- ancestral recall(1 of magics best cards), dark ritual, giant growth and healing salve). Infact 6 or the power 9(supposed 9 best magic cards ever) are in cycles(ancestral recall, and the 5 mox cycle).
Heaps of the best cards in magic were part of cycles, rancor was in a cycle, the wishes were a cycle, psychatog was is a cycle and the list goes on. Recently there was the spellbomb cycle(both aether and pyrite spellbomb were good), the slith cycle(slith firewalker was good), the pulse cycle(both pulse of the fields and forge were good), the echoing cycle(echoing truth, decay and ruin were good), The Beacon cycle(beacon of creation was great and all but beacon of tommorrows were good) and in CoK the dragon legend cycle(both kiega and kokusho were great and the others were all good) and the honden cycle(honden of seeing winds and infinite rage were both good and the others were atleast playable).
So face it there'll always be cycles and for the most part that's a good thing.
the cycles also add a way to see how each color deals whith things... like the splintter cycle theyre reprinting are all powerfull or at least playable, most of the time the cycles prove worthy for at least 2 of the 5 cards that come out. The aboove exaples all show just how effective cycles are
i thought glacial ray was part of a cycle with:
-blessed breath
-kodama's might
-soulless revival
-consuming vortex

The areas between the cities give them room for green and red creatures without having to print something like "Central Park Druid" or "Backyard Squirrel" or something.
Wizards recognizes that they can't predict how powerful any one card will turn the power of a single color. They try to keep the power and character cards in cycles to preserve the balance of all the colors. They do it poorly, but at least they try.
Cycles are tool used by R/D to solidify in the player's mind's what strengths and weakness's each color has. What part of the pie they get. They can also be used to make the populace aware when a shift in the color pie occurs.

the boon + block mechanic is the most common and decent cycle.
