The lair that was announced with lineup of 2025 is now shown off. and im happy to announce for team "anti UB" no mechanically unique cards this is all Reskin treatment like the Godzilla cards in Ikoria. the bad news... the noncreatures are almost meme pictures
now for the lair cards
Legendary creatures Creatures lair
and then a Food token thats a Crabby patty and one of each basic land
(hopefully for people who actually want it can get it since it seems the supposedly beat the scalpers when the "20 ways" precon wasn't outright sold out in seconds for reprints.)
There's a certain awkwardness when Patrick and Spongebob get reskinned Legendary Human cards due to the only Legendary Starfish being flavour-inappropriate (Plagon - that's it) and there being no Legendary Sponges. Would they have been better off with non-Legendary cards instead?
Not gonna lie, this one actually kinda suffers for being reskins instead of originals. Like, it feels criminal for Mr. Krabs to not employ tokens at all, but Charix is the only Legendary crab that's not also another UB card, so Charix is the only reskin possible. There AREN'T any possible legendary sponges or starfish, so I guess we just have to handwave Spongebob and Patrick being Humans. Toxrill and Toski as Gary and Sandy are spot on, at least. Not really sure why Squidward isn't one of the existing cephalid legends, though.
That all being said, those noncreature spells are AMAZING and pitch perfect.

there was one for Patrick Plagon, Lord of the Beach is a starfish legend but either it was made too late before the lair or they wanted flavor with Patrick having no abilties
and By the way plankton has the same problem I’m pretty sure he's not a “Phyrexian”
Seeing new art for the character cards and lands and then seeing the copy/paste from the show makes the later super lazy and awkward. Inevitable Betrayal just looks really bad, thanks to this scene being from the early parts of the show when it wasn't even widescreen yet, let alone HD. The same could be said for Daze, it looks like someone did this at home to make their own proxy.
I'm thankful these aren't mechanically unique, but the copy/paste is just eye rolling and reminds me of that incredibly awful SL from LotR that was worth like 80 cents, the one where they just took clips from the Bakshi film.

Those aren't copy-pastes though, they're recreations like the Transformers cards. Note no neck on Squidward on Night's Whisper, Patrick's shorts on Force of Despair, or Spongebob's entire placement on Counterspell. Also, I know people on here have less faith in Wizards than r/freemagic but they would not attribute these to Tyler Walpole if all he did was screenshot.

You would be correct, though I have to ask why do this. Weren't the Transformer cards using unused art from the card game that failed?
In defense of the actual SpongeBob SquarePants series on Nickelodeon, it was ONLY really good for Seasons 1-4 before the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) stepped in and fired all the adult humor writers from working on the show that made other cartoons on the network like Rocko's Modern Life and the Ren & Stimpy Show great which were both a big part of my childhood growing up as a young kid. Hey Arnold! still holds up among other Nicktoons as well. That being said, there's definitely a few missed opportunities with this SpongeBob Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair that they could've added like the Bubble Blowing technique that could've been an amazing throwback to Chaos Orb:
We could've had a Treasure token aside from the obvious Krabby Patty as the Food token card of the Secret Lair drop. Also HUGE missed opportunity on the reskinned Counterspell not being Rhystic Study instead, "Do you pay the 1?". They also could've incorporated Plankton as a reskinned Wall of Kelp as well. Is there a reason why Sandy is a 1/1 and SpongeBob is a 5/5 even though Sandy has ALWAYS proven to be stronger? Oh right. Reskins. Gotcha. No Mrs. Puff and Vehicles? Patrick also could've been Sinister Starfish instead of Barktooth Warbeard but oh well. The Flying Dutchman should've got his own card and perhaps even King Neptune. Just a thought.

As someone who has ordered approximately 70% of all Secret Lairs to date (sometimes in multiples), these have to be the worst I've seen so far in terms of value.
What's the chase card here?...Jodah, which I can already get a textured foil of for a mere $10 CAD?
Even if all of these cards were in one single drop, I wouldn't be interested, especially now with import tariffs being added which only adds insult to injury.
Had Rhystic study been included as you suggest, I would've happily ordered two copies.
Instead, I'll be ordering none, zero, zilch, nadda!
At least that 7-drop 6/5 vanilla finally got its first foiling, lol
Too bad, so sad! WotC Hasbro lost my business again!
Well done greedflation, you failed players again!

Nope, the Transformers were also recreations of actual scenes. A lot of the source material for both has some really low-quality footage to get from, so it won't work. Some aspects don't work as well either: the Squidward meme is actually way more zoomed-in than what the card art can show, and art like Slicer, Hired Muscle are 100% original pieces.

Gary's card is Toxrill, the Corrosive around $20
