Bit of a teaser before tomorrow's First Look, here are the four Commanders of the Final Fantasy precons. Each precon is meant to represent one of the franchise's gams, namely Final Fantasy VI, VII, X, and XIV, respectively. The commanders are Terra in the World of Ruin, Cloud Strife, Tidus playing Blitzball on the Sphere Grid experience system, and Y'shtola during the Shadowbringers arc.
Didn't see that coming for the set symbol being a chocobo hope it’s the main set symbol too.
Terra: isn't this pretty much Alesha, Who Smiles at death but ever so slightly different
1. Combat damage instead of attack trigger
2. You mill pre-combat which could land ammo
3. It’s the same dang reanimate ability but it’s 2 instead of (W/B)(W/B)
4. This is one factor how terra is actually better instead of 2 power with Alesha, Terra here is 3 power so far more options for terra decks. But bad news is the creatures not attacking
Cloud: I mostly know him from kingdom hearts and smash bros but I’m sure someone could explain why he doesn't have B in the color idenity? Because I’m well aware that fits for him because he's typically in a gloomy emotion and the whole sephiroth curse on him. (But I know the boros colors atleast are correct though) (actually you know what missed opportunity to have a BRGW commander)
anyway pretty typical for a equipment matter legend so I already know Nahiri, Forged in Fury would love love love to be in the 99
Titus: minor yawn another counters matter legend which is a theme done to death but still a interesting way probably how Falco Spara, Pactweaver would have wanted his card to be like… (but really you could just use Ms. Bumbleflower as a alt commander)
Y'shtola: now that is gonna hype players you could this could be built in the same matter as Queza, Augur of Agonies
Pretty much none of my guesses of what a Tidus MTG card would look like involved counter manipulation. Boo. (Gimme Kimahri gaining activated abilities of creatures on the battlefield.)
Cloud not being part black makes sense to me - there are far, far more characters splashing black more strongly in FFVII. Heck, even Barret - that iconoclast - splashes more black than Cloud.
Without getting into the crossover argument that I am itching to screech about, I'll just talk about the cards.
First can I say they missed a huge opportunity to have fun with these decks. These should have been Spirits Within, the bad anime, Mystic Quest, and War of the Visions. Just do the worst FF stuff. It would have been funny.
Terra - How is she Mardu? The white for hero, sure. The red for her fire magic, of course. Black for......working for the empire? If that's the case then she wouldn't be the "Herald of Hope" at that point nor really know of her Esper lineage and her Trance. Green feels like it should be here instead of black. I feel like Spirit is missing from her typing (if they weren't going to use Esper as a type) instead of warrior, but maybe warrior is about her time in the empire (which then she wouldn't be Trance'd, again confusing.)
It really feels like they are trying to represent her from multiple points in the game and it feels a little disjointed and confusing. This feels like she needed a few cards to relate to her throughout the game, like a Trance card version of her as an example.
Cloud - I knew he'd be equipment focused, even though he has no reason to be, but I guess "He has big sword" is all WotC thought of. Something about three colors here feels off, like I could see him as any combination of these three colors, but not all at the same time. Him having haste is strange as I've never considered him a fast character, besides Omnislash. He's....fine, nothing spectacular and incredibly easy to get to 7 power. He's sort of boring.
Tidus - He's a simic legendary that had white shoved in. In the interview that revealed these cards they say Tidus's counter sharing ability represents the Sphere Grid, but I'm not seeing it. I could see this representing passing the ball in Blitzball, but the entire leveling mechanic in that game? No.
I think Tidus needed spirit to represent him being dead (or being a summon/eidolon technically).
Tidus feels like the worst of the four, by quite a bit. Feels like his only play is Slippery Bogbonder and then a whole bunch of cards from Ikoria. Real boring.
Y'shtola - This is the one that I feel they got right, and I think she's the best. Fits her character really well, the colors are on point, and her abilities make her feel caster-y. Not only can you go the usual instant/sorcery route, but you can do artifacts if you so wished. I like a bit of variety when it comes to a commander like this.
She's going to get nasty with Glistening Oil and other infect fun, thanks to her dealing damage and not loss of life.

Tidus and Jecht are rather slippery - FFX emphasizes that Jecht alone is a dream (of the Fayth) made flesh, and he was made flesh the moment he washed ashore outside of Zanarkand. Tidus similarly was made flesh later. There are decent arguments of both being part illusion and both being non-illusions.
Auron, though...he's absolutely part spirit. (Mortally wounded just after his first trip bashing Sin in, died and hooked up with Jecht even with Jecht's crappy new job. Just never got around to asking for his one-way ticket to the Farplane.)
Y'shtola is one I wish would have an in-universe version. OTOH, the art looks like it could be a magic card, even though the cat bit is just a gal with pointy ears... which unfortunately looks like one of these nerdy sex fetish. At least it is discrete enough. I guess I'll try to buy it as a single, since she look like a nice control commander -- good enough without being completely overwhelming and annoying.
Would be cool to see the iconic Buster Sword from Final Fantasy VII get it's own card.

They absolutely will do at least the Buster Sword, and I'm sure they'll do the other famous FF equipment like Masamune, Save the Queen, Excalibur II, and so one.
