Alright, new core set time. Presenting, Magic: the Gathering Foundations.
But first off, some things for those of us who aren't enfrachised enough to see this thread. The Beginner Box is to help teach players the game. We've already seen the original Cats and Vampires list, but the box also contains ten custom Jumpstart Boosters to move forward after the first few tutorial rounds. Here's a look at some of those themes.
Next up is the Starter Collection, a massive collection of cards meant to be a replacement for the Deckbuilder's Toolkit. It contains 350+ cards, basic lands, deckbuilding guides, and three Foundations Play Boosters. Those 350+ cards include some big finishers, a couple of combos, some disruption, multicolor cards, and all the Temples again. Oh, and a card I'm sure most people won't mind a textless version for.
Now for the main set. We're starting off with regular basics featuring a reprint of some Rebecca Guay favorites.
This set also has full-art lands, to represent each color's representative planeswalker and legendary creature. We have Ajani and Giada for white, Kaito and Zimone for blue, Liliana and Tinybones for black, Chandra and Kellan for red, and Vivien and Loot for green.
As expected, we have a bunch of reprints from Alpha. And yes, that is Shivan Dragon at uncommon, you know how to draft this set now.
We have some newer reprints as well. Progenitus for five years anyone?
Oh right, new cards. Have some mythics.
Foundations pulls from across the Multiverse, and includes some older characters. That apparently includes former flavor text character Zul Ashur.
Booster Fun also makes an appearance in this set, including SEVENTY borderless cards. The rares and mythics among these will also receive something called a mana foil treatment, as seen here.
Japan Showcase continues into Foundations as well.
Special Guests pulls from frame treatments in previous sets to add flavor to what world these spells are put in.
Let’s rock, first off believe it or not I’m actually very happy to see vanilla creatures again
maelstrom pulse hey it’s pioneer legal now, interesting to see if it will see play (probably not)
Kyra reprint is huge for angel kindred fans that should keep it in bulk since this is a 5 year set
“Sad bot” see guys i knew that would be the teaser for the champion reprint snappy or Bob was just a hope pipe thing
Demonic pact + harmless offering oooooooooh that’s the two card win combo you force them to do the “you lose the game” part i thought of doing bad gifts deck in commander with codie
WHOOOOA!!! it’s gonna be interesting to see Mystical Teachings in standard again… and now pioneer legal
Tinybones 3.0: … the third Tinybones is actually the best one yet. This is what Tergrid, God of Fright should have been. Though this is disgusting with wheel of fortune effects
Time stop wow what a throw back from the Orignal Kamigawa block back again and that was he wrong price so I’m glad to see it reprinted here to get it to bulk price…forever
reallly??? We’re returning Progenitus to standard kid of shocked to see him in a beginner set that card is tough to understand initially, though I really wish they gone with the from the vault art since I like that art better.
Twin flame tyrant:… SAY WHAT!?!?! We got Sawhorn Nemesis in modern horizons 3 and this is the steroids version.
Conquerer: THEEEEEEEY DID IIIIIIIIIIT!!!: WE FINALLY GOT A SECOND EXQUISITE BLOOD EFFECT! AND ITS A CREATURE SO EASILY TO DO!
Niv mizzet: “when a source de…” oh my gosh! You draw for every single grapeshot made
Mono white arahbo: didn’t see that coming to see this cat back, and as usual nice for cat tribal
Zhul Ashur: really? Wow the character from the flavor text of Deathmark and none other than Reassembling Skeleton that’s interesting pretty much zombie tribal
Hydra: whoa that’s gonna grow quick in lord windgrace decks
Sad bot: see I told you guys that would be the champion card teaser, I knew snappy or bob was stretching it.
OH MAN I WANT THIS FOR THE ART!!! That’s my vote for my favorite Phyrexian Arena arts easily!
I thought about scapeshift for the mossborn hydra... that can easily be 100+ trample damage coming your way. Merely being on turn 4 with no extra counters shenanigans is already 32 damage coming your way. (Don't forget to count the 4th turn landfall...)
The goblin raider is a nice addition to goblin tribal.
I agree the tyrant damage doubling at 5 mana is pretty pushed.
I'll bring back my grixis harmless pact from the magic origin era. Kinda cheesy.
