I think its closer to meld or possibly inspired from banding since the grim captain gets 4 abilities.
Menace - pirates
trample - dinosaurs
lifelink - vampires
hexproof - merfolk
pucatrade
big receipts
alpha mox emerald
beta time walk
4 goyfs received
3 liliana of the veil
4 karn liberated
3 force of will
4 grove of the burnwillows
snapcaster mage
3 horizon canopy
2 full art damnation
I love the fullart lands for this but those standard art basics are quite nice too.
Thone of the Grim Captain seems like a hilarious card to try and make work, looks fun.
Different descend variants is a little stretched but I appreciate the idea of unifying all the permanent cards in graveyard effects under one flexible mechanic. Wonder how this experiment will go over.
Frankly, menace and trample seem redundant. So what if they block your 7/7 trampler with a single 1/1? So what if they need to double-block -- they probably need to anyway to get rid of your 7/7 life-linker. I get that they probably went for a never-done keyword soup, but it could have lacked menace and it would not have changed much. I guess it adds a teeny bit of flavor?

I'm guessing it's reference to the tokens of original Ixalan block. We had a 3/3 Dinosaur with trample, 1/1 Merfolk with hexproof, 1/1 Vampire with lifelink, and 2/2 Pirate with menace. They get fused together, so we get that keyword soup.
So descend, Descend X, and Fathomless descent, all in the same set doing slightly different things. My question is just: Why?
It's just descend x and fathomless descent. Either looking for a specific number or counting all of them for a variable effect. One of the issues with Threshold was that it was always stuck as a static number (7 cards) and could only return true or false. This opens up the design space significantly.

There are also cards that care if or how many times you descended, with descend in that case meaning to put a permanent card into your graveyard.

As always, we have our Mechanics article and a bunch of simple (enough) commons to explain things.
Finally, we have the Collecting [SET] article that no one reads, explaining things and reminding us that non-full-art basics still exist.

This is not Inspiring Overseer - closer to Preening Champion. Still good, obviously.

RUNIN: Norse mythology set (awaiting further playtesting)
FATE of ALARA: Multicolour factions (currently on hiatus)
Contibutor to the Pyrulea community set
I'm here to tell you that all your set mechanics are bad

Wow, amazing deduction! They even add-up to 7/7!
