So I guess Kellan is going to be our protagonist for this part of the latest arc?
I wonder why they took so long to reveal the expansion symbol...
Huatli looks pissed she lost her spark. Maybe the omenpaths will open up and let her travel to wherever Saheeli is...
I have the feeling that Kellan would be the silver thread going through the whole omenpath arc
But you know what though? That's actually quite cool. It's taking us back to the days of when non-walkers a la Gerrardetalwerethecentralprotagonists and the actual planeswalkers played a secondary or tertiary role.
Maybe What-See learned their lesson and started to tone down the overabundance of planeswalkers and reverting that role to the actual player.

They said its been a year in lore between MoM, so ya I think there is a lot of options and time for how she could have gotten to Ixalan.
I feel like Magic used to have a thing where time passes differently from plane to plane, like a year on one plane could be a month or a decade on another, and they just phased that out?
Nope, they said in the panel that the set isn't tribe-focused this time around, which means we can assume that the Limited archetypes aren't either.
What confuses me is that they say they aren't focusing as much on tribes this time...and then debut four precons based around tribal archetypes. Oh, and 2 of the 5 new cards they previewed also support those archetypes.
I know there's plenty more cards in the set, but this is some pretty mixed messaging.
Yeah, we'll have to see more of the set to figure it out, but to me it says "And this is as much support as you're getting for these creature types. We're doing everything else now."

Iirc, they said that the EDH precons will have more tribal themes, but the main set itself will not.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
So here's something I've been wondering for a while. How long has it been in canon since the events of like... Zendikar 1? I keep waiting for characters to visibly age. Sure, Nahiri and Sorin and Liliana and Karn are eternal, ageless beings. But why is Chandra still like 24? At least the Kenrith sibs did seem to grow up a bit in their latest representation.
Its been ~6 years between Zendiakr 1 and Ixalan 2.
The creative team(s) at the time didn't really try to lock in ages or timelines until they reached the gatewatch era and the creative team then decided to try figure out ages and timelines ect. So they decided around then Chandra was ~17-19 when we first saw her, 22 during Kaladesh/Gatewatch era and she would be now 25 as of Ixalan 2.
So a mix of that plus marketing to keep faces familiar.

Creature type matter decks (tribal) are popular so they always will include some in most sets such we saw with faeries or rats in Eldraine (or knights in MOM, Soldiers in BRO, ect) but some sets/setting are more focused on the it such as Innistrad having the monsters vs human focus.
So on the scale of Eldraine 2 and Innistrad, Ixalan 1 was closer to Innistrad while this time Ixalan 2 will be closer to Eldraine 2, it will still have dinos (and maybe the other tribes) matters cards (and likely have them be a draft archtype) but they aren't the big focus.

The "mini" precons commander decks for sets are often built to explore themes they feel like they can't do more of in the main set. They have even said that they did four and have them be the old Ixalan factions for people who wouldn't get that in the main set.

That wasn't really a thing at least post mending. What it is different planes will measure times at different rates but time itself flows at the same rate in the multiverse.

Okay, that makes sense. "We're not focusing on tribal this time, but two of these are tribes that don't get much support unless we're on Ixalan. Here's a few cards to punch them up a little."

Basically, why should a "year" be exactly the same on different planes?

Becomes a bit more of a mess when some planes have 5 suns (mirrodin), some planes have artificial suns (ixalan), no sun (innistrad at times), tiny suns? (segovia). Star Trek adopted "star date" - a xeno-centric earth based time to deal with the issue - so I wonder if we will adopt Dominaria as our baseline for a year (and even they have an AD and BC - relating to the brother's war I believe or is it Ice Age? which would be awkward to implement). Regardless - until a context of a year in mtg has been established - as well as a general aging process - Chandra may be 8 "years" older but that may be 2 years of the physical signs of aging.

Yep, that was what I meant. After all, we know he will be with daddy Oko in Outlaws of Thunder Junction.

They are using a timeline with the mending as a focus point and its measured in real life time measurements in order to keep things "simple". They want thing to be easily goked for people so if they say a year has passed they are talking about how we on earth will measure a year and character have aged in what we consider a year.

It is also worth noting that not every culture uses the sun(s) to measure the passage of time even here on Earth.
As you know, the Jewish calendar is lunar, and as such, there is a leap-month.
Whether we consider it to be the year 2023 or 5784 is arbitrary since none of the calendars we use are entirely accurate, and science proves our species and planet have been around, rotating for much longer. In fact, even the speed at which our planet rotates on its own axis has changed slightly over time (sometimes caused by earthquakes) which has caused days to become shorter, and even the orbit and poles shift, moving slightly as the Earth wobbles and recalibrates, which obviously affects everything from weather patterns to average seasonal measurements (also influenced by the moon's gravity which affects the tides). But I digress. The point is, it is reasonable to assume that time measurements for days and years is equally unstable on other planets and planes in the Magic universe, and always subject to change.
That being said, time is always relative, never constant, and I hope you've been having a good new year and holiday season.

EDIT: It is also theoretically plausible that there may be planets, galaxies, or planes which are affected by yet discovered temporal anomalies which cause the passage of time to occur faster or slower than what we're accustomed to. This phenomenon is known as "time dilation", an interesting concept which has been explored in science fiction such as the Season 6 Episode 12 episode of Star Trek: Voyager entitled 'Blink of an Eye'
looks like "Cat" will be a type in Lost caverns of ixalan along with "Angel" and "God" were getting jaguar people.

Love it, we should have them last time. I'm very much enjoying this soft reboot of Ixalan.
