This preview panel brings up three big sets: Lost Caverns of Ixalan, the Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth holiday release, and Ravnica Remastered. Let's dive in — we have a lot to talk about.
Lost Caverns of Ixalan shows a return to the world, and its core. Joining us on the journey to the center of the plane will be the recently-desparked Huatli, now with a Saga on the back. Her team also consists of her also-desparked girlfriend Saheeli, newly sparked Quintorius, and Kellan.
We do have Dinosaurs-matter in the set, just not as much as the first trip. Here's Skullspore Nexus, and its borderless treatment named after the Oltec people of the inner world of Ixalan.
Returning this set are DFCs that turn into lands. First up, a God that turns into a land. This God will also have the Gods of Ixalan showcase treatment.
Returning characters Breeches and Ghalta get new cards in this set. Breeches shows up in a version of the coin showcase from March of the Machine, while Ghalta gets the full borderless treatment.
Speaking of more full-art things, here are the obligatory full-art basics.
Also returning to this set: Cavern of Souls itself. Its showcase treatment is called the Cosmium Neon Ink treatment.
And that's not the only one. It's getting the same multiple-rare-art treatment that Hidetsugu, Devouring Chaos did.
Each box will have a Treasure Trove box topper. First up, Coercive Portal.
Set and Collector Boosters get one more way to get reprints called Special Guests, a new thing in Set and Collector Boosters moving forward. These reprints are like the things from Masters sets, but in the art and aesthetics of the world. For our first round, we have Lord of Atlantis taking an Omenpath to Ixalan, and the long-awaited Mana Crypt.
And yes, Crypt is getting the Neon treatment, here called the Cosmium neon showcase frame.
And now, for the Universes Beyond partnership, welcome to Jurassic Park.
This UB set has 26 cards, found in Set and Collector Boosters. Here's two more.
For more details on Lost Caverns of Ixalan, including important dates, more art, and the four Commander precons, see here. Lost Caverns of Ixalan previews start October 24, and releases November 17.
Next up, Ravnica Remastered.
Anime style frames return, because the only place Magic has any actual competition in the TCG space is still just Japan.
And yes, we get retro frames as well.
And now, next year's year's shockland reprints.
Ravnica Remastered previews start December 19, and the set releases January 12. For more details, see here.
Scalding Viper, meet your new best friend Ojer Axonil. I expect you two to become very acquainted in the following Standard format.
Breeches also seems insane, if there's a halfway decent two-mana Pirate for it to curve into it will be a house and even if there isn't a versatile 3/3 First striker is nothing to be scoffed at.
The other cards seem underwhelming, Huatli could be fun in some Agatha brew but otherwise seems just clunky, Skullspore could be a sideboard in grindy matchups but otherwise too situational and doubly so against exile-based wraths and Ghalta almost looks like a joke when compared to Etali, Primal Conqueror and Atraxa, Grand Unifier.
Not much to comment on Jurrasic Park UB, I LOVE the flavor of Welcome to Jurassic Park but the other two are just okay. Lastly, holy crackers there's some god-tier art on display here. Those Ixalan Special Guests and special treatments all look fantastic, especially Skullspore and the basics, and all five Anime treatment Ravnica reprints look amazing which is good especially considering that Anime Enchanted Tales had some very obvious duds.
Playing since 1994: Currently MAGS (HomeBrew),Standard & Pauper (Pioneer and Modern are degenerate trash formats)
STOP using "dude/bro" as a pejorative or insult. Grow up.
Margaret Thatcher: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.”
Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Martin Luther King Jr.: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
Hualti/saga: that’s a bit underwhelming since it only gets basics and the saga doesn't flip it back to hualti like the praetors in MOM, but the saga side is wonderful for my dinosaur tribal deck though
Skullspore: whoa…single target destroy removal for creature hate and we get a monstrous creature from wraths, and a cherry on top, cost reduction from power and can double the size of the creature
ojer: ok another mono color god cycle, and WOOOOOW! ojer is gonna be disgusting in Purphoros, God of the Forge (and… look at Purphoros mana ability.) and how the gods survive wow it’s gonna be so hard to get rid of them since they pretty much need exile.
Breeches 2.0: that’s pretty good atleast it’s not kill on sight like 5e first time (you pretty much become archenemy by default if theft becomes involved)
Basics: my good ness those are on par to as pretty as the kamigawa neon dynasty lands
Cavern of souls: *sees it’s standard legal* IMPOSSIBLE!…… IMPOSSIBLE!!! That’s a $50 dollar card that’s only seen reprints in master sets and in the top 20 most OP lands in magic of all time. And…… gonna be pioneer legal I can guess we got a potential warp coming this might cause a stampede of tribal decks to enter pioneer. (Cherry ontop the neon ink art variants that Hidetsugu, Devouring Chaos got)
Special guests: so they finally cracked it on getting master set level reprints in sets let’s see how it works. Also my goodness mana vault is one of those. And it also got the neon art treatment. Those might end up $1000+ (rarest one will probably be Power 9 priced)
welcome to…/Jurassic park: wow does my dinosaur deck love that or what. It gives underworld breach for dinosaurs and a gaea's cradle for dinosaurs too.
Indomious Rex: …… I think we got a new world record for the biggest keyword soup creature in all of mtg because indomious can potentially get every single evergreen keyword in existence (it beats Kathril, Aspect Warper, by one keyword and thats "Haste".) If I see enough UB dinosaurs/support in here/future I’m gonna try Rukarumel, Biologist dinosaur tribal.
Oh and lookingupanddown didn't include other important stuff from the first look
theres gonna be a Gishath 2.0 (the symbol on the chest is on OG Gishath)
are elephant boy in ixalan rumor has now come full fruitation.
Saheeli is here as well
And remmeber we know Quintorious is the planeswalker from the rumor/leak so which means saheeli will not have a spark making her the first planeswalker to not be at their home plane when the sparks were lost in MOM
theres 4 commander decks and it’s so simple. It’s just all four tribal decks and it’s all four tribes from the first ixalan visit. This is a loophole to include the tribal aspect of ixalan from last time. Since we’re not getting as much (and dinosaurs getting the most attention again.)
and these decks throw in a subtheme with their tribes
Pirates — reanimation (probably self discard/mill/aristocrats) as well
Vampires — believe it or not looks like Demon tribal
Merfolk — landfall/ buffing (+1/+1, lord effects)
Dinosaurs — ramp matters (likely land based like with cards like exploration, Rampant growth)
it’s the kellan card and this is interesting it looks like every card he gets will have a adventure spell on him so I will call him the “the adventure spell of the set”
and we’re getting map tokens so I’m willing to be this is member number 5 of the treasure, clue, food, and blood token and it’s probably gonna involves scrying or surveiling (basically based on the explore mechanic from the first visit)

This is from a different panel, he was only shown a few hours ago.
Ojer Axonil seems really similar to Solphim, Mayhem Dominus, which does not bode well for its playability. Anything that deals 2 or more damage is the same or better with Solphim, Solphim hits non=player permanents and both cards have some kind of resistance to destruction (though neither is easy to achieve). However, the one place where it does better is with 1 damage effects, which there are currently quite a few of in Standard. Most notably: Kumano Faces Kakkazan, Voldaren Epicure, Chandra, Dressed to Kill. Honorable mention to Witty Roastmaster which, while not currently played, curves into it very nicely. Still, probably just slower than current mono-red aggro decks.
Breeches could be good if there are a lot of pirates, but it sounds like that's not gonna be a major theme of the set
Huatli, Ghalta and the Skullspore Nexus all feel kinda low impact for the price, but Ghalta into, say, Imodane's Recruiter and another big creature sounds fun if a bit hard to pull off.
Anyway with Jurassic park/world cards might as well get the possibles. That be likely but no guarateeda (if some of these famous ones are missing most likely the secret lair coming up down the line will have em) (note these are the ones I know about atleast)
“Dinosaurs”
Imdomious Rex (confirmed)
Indoraptor
Blue, The Big one, or/and Ghost (we will get Blue the other two vary)
Rexy (Tyranosaurus Rex)
Thee brachiosaurus (the very first one we see in the film series)
Thee Giganotosaurus (funny enough this is most likely the type of dinosaur Gishath is)
Thee Spinosaurus
Thee Mosasaurus
And maybe a Dilophosaurus
“humans”
Ian (confirmed)
Owen Grady
Claire dealing
Alan grant
John Hammond
(I know there’s way more human characters this is best I can think of.)
“Others”
The gate (confirmed)
The jeep
the gyrosphere
However, the one place where it does better is with 1 damage effects, which there are currently quite a few of in Standard.
Well, it could create an archetype on its own with unruly catapult: tap catapult for 4, play a burn spell for 4, untap catapult and do another 4... that's a dead opponent is very short order.
Edit: for even more all-in, replace the burn spell with a pair of giant growth to deal a total of 21. (4 + 7 + 10) Then again, tyvar's stand fills all of the untap / pump and protect role in a one-mana-or-more card...
Saheeli is on Ixalan. They...sort of retconned Aftermath, I guess? But her art was shown as part of the set.
My hope is that it's not a retcon so much as a follow up. Talking to Rashmi, finding an omenpath and getting lucky. Apparently it has been a few months since MOM, and there are a few things that could have happened.
or it could just be a retcon because they don't take the story seriously and we shouldn't care either.

“There are no weak Jews. I am descended from those who wrestle angels and kill giants. We were chosen by God. You were chosen by a pathetic little man who can't seem to grow a full mustache"
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
So here's something I've been wondering for a while. How long has it been in canon since the events of like... Zendikar 1? I keep waiting for characters to visibly age. Sure, Nahiri and Sorin and Liliana and Karn are eternal, ageless beings. But why is Chandra still like 24? At least the Kenrith sibs did seem to grow up a bit in their latest representation.
You know, I said something similar to my friend when we were sitting in the audience at the preview panel... He replied "Why? You don't need Ghalta"
And you know what? I think he's right. If you're cheating in a Griselbrand or Emrakul, you're already winning the game. Cheating in something that can put them into play is just win-more.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
Nope, they said in the panel that the set isn't tribe-focused this time around, which means we can assume that the Limited archetypes aren't either.
What confuses me is that they say they aren't focusing as much on tribes this time...and then debut four precons based around tribal archetypes. Oh, and 2 of the 5 new cards they previewed also support those archetypes.
I know there's plenty more cards in the set, but this is some pretty mixed messaging.
