It's a cute touch that the actual "tapes" on the "Now on VHS" set have a stamp that shows what set they picked it from and what number it is in that set.
EDIT: Scratch that, not even a random set, it's always the original set the card appeared in. I didn't realize Rampant Growth didn't exist before Sixth Edition.
Second edit, made another mistake (god I'm tired). Sixth edition is just the first one that shows up when you list things out on Gatherer because they have...some sort of random order.
So only about two of these are worth getting based on value alone based on one card, which tends to be the SL MO. One of these is almost illegible. I will say I get a bit of a chuckle seeing Rewind in the VHS SL. I kinda like the baseball one, even if the value isn't there; Ajani's "briefly traded to the Phyrexians" is a good joke.
remember when secret lairs were a new thing and garnered a little bit of excitement, but a vocal minority of us were concerned about things like reprint equity?

we're there!
I don't know if reprint equity is why these are subpar/bad. SLs have always been this way, usually one card propping up the value of the entire thing while you have at least one or two that are 60-80% the value and one that is usually amazing in foil due to first time foil reprints. Then you have the land SLs, which are always a bad value no matter if you like the art or not.

I remember people complaining about them from the moment they were announced on up to right now.
I remember people complaining about them from the moment they were announced on up to right now.
The have-nots will always complain about the products which they either can't afford or don't interest them.
Personally, my primary complaint is that as a Canadian, I have to pay for shipping (which is free for domestic US consumers) in addition to currency rate conversion which adds to the cost significantly. Early on, I also had to pay duty upon delivery, which fortunately has since been corrected and included in the initial purchase costs (perhaps due to the new smaller eco-friendly packaging). I was also slightly annoyed that it took many months to receive the "Heads I Win, Tails You Lose" deck, but I assume that was solely due to the coins which weren't "minted" in time for prompt distribution.
As for value, lest we forget each drop also contains a bonus "mystery" card in addition to those revealed, and none of the drops have gone down in price (to my knowledge, except perhaps the serum visions drop) since the date they were released, that is, if they're kept sealed. Truthfully, most drops appreciate in value better than my mutual funds, so I suppose my only complaint now is that I don't have more disposable income to order more of them (spare copies to keep sealed) so I can trade them at later dates for double, if not more than what I paid.
Overall, I say this is a great product line for those who want cards which are very different with unusual alternate art, and for those who don't, there are plenty of other supplemental products containing reprints (ie: Masters sets and Commander decks). There's no denying that Secret Lair is certainly much better than the days of From The Vault where I literally had to take time off work to line up at stores before they opened on release dates, pay huge mark-ups despite MSRP being a thing at the time (especially for FTV 20), and occasionally even had to win raffles/drawings just to have an opportunity to buy a single box set because supply was so limited which often resulted in several frustrated customers leaving the stores empty handed who gave dirty looks towards whoever won the right to purchase said products. At least now there's enough supply to meet demand and we can order these "specialty" box sets directly from WotC without having to deal with the dramatic retail nonsense of yesteryear.
Magic: The Baseballing just feels as though Wizards of the Coast / Hasbro are REALLY desperate to outdo the Sports Card Industry which is very reflective of what they're doing with Magic: The Gathering right now. Too bad these won't be in wrappers with chewing gum like in the good ole' days.

They jumped the shark. (You youngins can look it up)
I love baseball and at one point had more baseball cards than Magic cards. But I have ZERO interest in these. They are cheesy/corny/tacky to the Nth degree. If someone wants to spend their hard earned money on them go right ahead but it won't be me.
I actually really like the artwork on a couple of the other drops, but won't buy either for 2 reasons.
1. Value isn't there.
2. Where are the 4 of playsets??? I want 4 of certain cards and I am not paying 120 bucks for a playset of cards I can get for 1 tenth of that price. WotC needs to remember there are more than just Commander players out there.

The have-nots will always complain about the products which they either can't afford or don't interest them.
I honestly can't imagine the ability to call people "have-nots" when they find legitimate criticisms with poor products or people being unable to afford cards at an increased mark up. "You guys have-nots for not wanting to spend $30 on a whole 80 cents of Bakshi LotR movie variants."
The criticisms of SLs are not something made up by these imaginary angry people but because there are problems with them from WotC ignoring stores, the constant deluge of products, many of the SLs being nowhere near the price you're paying for them, if they are worth it a vast majority of the value is leaned on heavily by one specific card with the others being jank more often than not, and more. They aren't doing it due to some preposterous idea that they're missing out somehow.
Also, can you be a "have-not" when you're purposefully not attaining a thing? Guess I'm a "have-not" by hating being kicked in the crotch.
I was also slightly annoyed that it took many months to receive the "Heads I Win, Tails You Lose" deck, but I assume that was solely due to the coins which weren't "minted" in time for prompt distribution.
"Many months" is one heck of a boiling down of the over a year long wait to get it. It would have been quicker to use a time machine back to the 80s and wait 6 months for a sweepstakes to be sent to you.
As for value, lest we forget each drop also contains a bonus "mystery" card
Ah yes, the ""mystery" card" that could be anything from a $20 Arcbound Ravager to a $2 sliver. Play the gacha harder.
Truthfully, most drops appreciate in value better than my mutual funds, so I suppose my only complaint now is that I don't have more disposable income to order more of them (spare copies to keep sealed) so I can trade them at later dates for double, if not more than what I paid.
The problem with this is that when people speak of the value of a SL they are talking about the individual cards that make up the SL and if all you're going to do is keep it unopened in order to play the stock market then you don't really have to worry about the value of each single card. Also, who trades for a SL? It would honestly be cheaper to just buy the individual cards in them, much like how it's usually much cheaper to buy a non SL version of the cards rather than paying that mark up that WotC likes to put on the ones that can't reach $30-$40.
The sport card industry completely collapsed in the 90s and magic overtook them in like, 1998. Plus the secondary market is literally the same as the sport card market, where folks buy cards to invest instead of playing them. Just an overall bizarre thing to say.
Truthfully, most drops appreciate in value better than my mutual funds, so I suppose my only complaint now is that I don't have more disposable income to order more of them (spare copies to keep sealed) so I can trade them at later dates for double, if not more than what I paid.
Actually this exact attitude is what killed sports cards, because at the end of the day there's no value to these tulip bulbsbeanie babiesNFTs cards that isn't based on hype and if the hype ever runs out the market disappears instantly.
These are all awful. Just an assault on my eyes. Kev Walker's art is at least cool though none of the cards are desirable to me. I expected to be uninterested in most Secret Lairs but the interesting thing is that all of these styles with the exception of the baseball cards (which is awful all on its own) feel like they've been done before.
These aren't supposed to appeal to everyone but I thought their goal was to be unique. And we are already rehashing the B-movie poster style, the heavy metal music poster style, the black and white stuff, illegible squiggly alien thing, and nickelodeon cartoon style?
Seems to be another sign to just chill out with these. Or, maybe people who like those styles are excited for another round? I dunno...it's just "not for me" I guess.
Ugh…bastardizing the game once more. The only thing that looks like magic is the Kev Walker set.
this and many other reasons is why I stopped playing MTG.
