Looks fun. Glad they went all out on it with the art and such. Amass Orcs is a great idea.

Having 9 Nazgul allowed in a deck is awesome and on flavor! Reminds of the 7 dwarves from Eldraine.

This will interesting, designing an Army deck that is token themed and split between zombies and orcs.

Not sure if you guys have seen these also.

Sam: if there’s enough legends in my deck that might be testable in my Garth flicker deck

pippin: that’s a interesting take on Mother of Runes effects

Boromir: not again… that’s an another variant of the hardest lock to defeat in the game, and it’s what we call the knowledge pool lock

Gimli: oh that’s interesting it gains indestructible for the second die trigger but then fights something and he grows ok this will a nice removal option

Legolas: dang that’s basically a mono green version of feather, the redeemed but worse since it doesn't buyback 0 your cards

Gandalf the white: another Panharmonicon?! And this one does leave triggers as well for the legends and artifacts

sauron: whoa!!! That is probably thee hardest ward cost to pay to date you have to sac a legend that’s a creature or artifact and any opponent spell cast makes a snowball army token. Plus it’s army tribal (not orc army so zombie armies work with this) the ring tempts you if you hit with it and you can discard all and draw 4

The part of me that's been shaking my head at the racists complaining about Aragorn finds it very amusing that his solo card is every color in the game except black.

I really want to be excited for this but I'm at the point where there is too much going on and I can't keep up.

I've got severe depression, severe anxiety, and almost double the lowest threshold for someone with PTSD, my mental bandwidth is exhausted. I mean it looks like a cool set for those who are invested in some way, but I'm out for now. Enjoy folks!

I feel as though Boromir, Warden of the Tower has a lot of potential as a Mono-White Commander where he'd be more situational in the 99. How often do we see someone at the table casting that Force of Will, Pact of Negation, Force of Negation, or Fierce Guardianship whenever someone is trying to combo off while everyone else at the table are all tapped out on mana to respond? Not to mention that he can protect you from board wipes by sacrificing himself and If you're able to turn your lands into creatures it gets even better but that's mainly If you run Boromir in the 99 with other colors.

Gandalf the White is no where near as good as Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines but has a niche somewhere I guess. Eomer, Marshal of Rohan seems really good with Aurelia, the Warleader and other combat matters cards. Gothmog, Morgul Lieutenant seems good with Chatterfang, Squirrel General shenanigans. Aragorn, the Uniter could be solid as a 4 color Commander but compared to Omnath, Locus of Creation it's yet to be determined how good he can be. What If there was a card that made a spell you cast all colors until end of turn to reap all the benefits from his abilities? Silly but fun.

Because everyone that disagrees with a particular corporate’s team decision is a racist. This novel was based on mythology. Therefore the only racists are the ones that want to change the origins to please other people from an unrelated background.

Outside the US people are boiling over these some decisions.

I feel you man. I’ve endured a lot of depression and the least that you want is to be overloaded with info when trying to enjoy the favorite game that it once was.

I agree! Amass just seems to fit in here as a mechanic, in a way it didn't quite seem to even in War of the Spark. I like it.

A lot of good flavorful cards here, I think; they're doing a great job of having the instants & sorceries support the 'creatures/tokens/artifacts matter' theme they're going for. I feel like a lot of sets these days fumble in their synergy, but not this one.

Stuff like Eomer giving you an Aggravated Assault effect when one of your attacking legendaries dies, for example, is great; they thought these out well.

Some of it looks ok, but it's like they made everything look different just for the sake of it. I think the three coolest cards are the box topper Ensnaring bridge, Cavern of Souls and Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth. Sauron looks way too Phyrexian too. Almost everything just looks off to me, except a small handful of cards. Off in a deliberate way.
They should just have used Peter Jackson's lord of the rings and then added the book stuff they wanted in addition.

Why do people think it has to be either Peter Jackson or... whatever this is (like Phyrexian Barad-dur?). There's like 3 different LOTR card games that precede or deviate from the movies and are not as garish as some of these. Look at the LCG, MECCG, or the new War of the Ring card game, etc

Because the Peter Jackson movies are bloody brilliant

Legolas seems kinda crazy with Bite effects, or something like Dromoka's Command
could be kinda crazy in a Heroic-esque or Hardened Scales type of list.

I think I'll try and build a Naya heroic deck featuring Legolas and Feather in historic.
this will be fun.

the bad guys are feeling so underpowered and it makes me sad. The Witch King, the Nazgul, the Balrog, Saruman, now Grond. I was hoping for some stuff balanced by casting costs, but they make you feel existential dread when they hit the field across from you. The Nazgul could have used day/night, day is what we got, night is something a lot better. idk, there's so much good flavor in this set, but almost none of the bad guys feel like something any of the Fellowship run and hide from, which seems like as much of a flavor fail as 'the Ring tempts you' being all upside.

For most people in 2023, Peter Jackson movies are their only exposure to Lord of the rings/The Hobbit. The movies brought a resurgence of Tolkien in general. IMO, if not for Peter Jackson's movies, there wouldn't be a Lord of the rings mtg set.
