If they're serious about saving Paper Standard (which they aren't) then they would've been more aggressive with the number of cards being banned or at least restricted to one per deck. This does nothing. What's also disheartening is their intent of keeping Legacy and Vintage around when they don't need to as mentioned in the article. There's WAY too many Paper formats in the game and they need to cut their losses but they won't because they want to use Legacy and Vintage to prop up sales for Commander even though they're not really able to tap into the Secondary Market in a way that gets themselves into legal trouble.
Also Paper Standard updates only needing to take place once per year? How exactly does that renew players' confidence in their deck selection and construction? It's clear that Wizards of the Coast / Hasbro are deliberately choosing not to fix Paper Standard because they know that fixing Paper Standard could potentially lead to less players on Arena and more players playing In-Person at Local Game Stores (LGSs) and they hate the social stigma that comes from playing In-Person at Local Game Stores (LGSs) with random strangers that might not be as dangerous. It's why they're pushing Commander as hard as they are.

Interesting. Fable needed a ban, for sure, Invoke Despair is a perfectly good choice and I'm not sure Bankbuster is necessary, but it's very heavily played, so I get it.
I am not sure this will improve standard much - as noted by seilaoque, Esper legends in untouched and will likely claim the top spot from Rakdos (note, Rakdos is one of Esper's worst matchups too). The Fable ban is probably a bigger hit for reanimator than it is for Rakdos and Grixis control lists, so I don't expect much of a rise there. Rakdos and Grixis are probably still viable, but my guess is Grixis probably takes play from Rakdos without Invoke Despair putting stress on the mana base.
Seems that way, though Monored can put serious pressure on Esper, Lithomantic Barrageis hell on Esper, on top of all of the other burn cards to keep their creatures in check except her, of course. I'm a bit worried about Atraxa being in the format, even if there's no Fable to dig for her anymore. I suspect one of those two may still get the boot in August. I wouldn't have banned Bankbuster, but Fable and Invoke Despair had reaally overstayed her welcome, so good on WOTC.
I would have banned the 3 banned cards, and Atraxa and Raffine alongside them.
Ugh, good riddance to those 3 but once again they should have taken it farther.
Atraxa, Raffine and Wandering Emperor should have eaten a ban as well.
So now those decks become far more annoying and overplayed.

Playing since 1994: Currently MAGS (HomeBrew),Standard & Pauper (Pioneer and Modern are degenerate trash formats)

So I told my friend who owns a card shop that Fable and Invoke Despair should be banned but not Sheoldred however I didn't know if that is the path WotC would take. Fable and Invoke Despair have a similar problem to Expressive Iteration where they dig deep and likely the best thing you can do is play the same card turn after turn which is just miserable to play against. I'm not surprised to see Bankbuster here I was thinking the other day that if it had been printed in the first 20 years of MtG it would have been restricted in Vintage! Anyhow seems like a pretty good list I just crafted 3 Wedding Announcement to complete my playset and 2 Raffine (need a mythic rare wild card before next week to finish my playset which is my next unlock on pack opens so I will get there). Let the wildcards rain on me!
I nailed the first two and will take half credit on Bankbuster! Shame none of the others got it though I could have used some Mythic Rare wilcards
Due to power creep and poor testing (T3feri, Veil of Summer, Oko, Thief of Crowns anyone?) banning cards in Standard is more necessary now than in the past
Fixed for clarity.

White still holds on to its engine so we might see monowhite start to creep up more than it has. The Wandering Emperor remains intact.
I'm not too familiar with the BR schedule. When will be the next time they come together to do a BR announcement? September after Wilds?
Oh, they say August 7th for the annual ban. Wonder if people can hold tight until then?
