I'm surprised they haven't printed something like Torpor Orb or a modified Harsh Mentor to weaken sagas, etc..
Answers like the above might reduce the number of banned cards needed. Its a flashback to the original mirrodin block bans.

So I told my friend who owns a card shop that Fable and Invoke Despair should be banned but not Sheoldred however I didn't know if that is the path WotC would take. Fable and Invoke Despair have a similar problem to Expressive Iteration where they dig deep and likely the best thing you can do is play the same card turn after turn which is just miserable to play against. I'm not surprised to see Bankbuster here I was thinking the other day that if it had been printed in the first 20 years of MtG it would have been restricted in Vintage! Anyhow seems like a pretty good list I just crafted 3 Wedding Announcement to complete my playset and 2 Raffine (need a mythic rare wild card before next week to finish my playset which is my next unlock on pack opens so I will get there). Let the wildcards rain on me!
Here's what I posted the other day in a different thread...
Bankbuster
Fable
Invoke Despair
That is the bare minimum. So without any restrictions these others would be healthy to the format to be cut (Would love to see these restricted and not banned but WotC is too dumb to do the right thing)
If true I hit 6 of them. Wish it was my list in totality but I will take what I can get.

Playing since 1994: Currently MAGS (HomeBrew),Standard & Pauper (Pioneer and Modern are degenerate trash formats)
STOP using "dude/bro" as a pejorative or insult. Grow up.
Margaret Thatcher: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.”
Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Martin Luther King Jr.: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
Xcric: I'm under the same mindset. I mean if they're going to ban that many cards from rotation-ready sets they might as well just keep rotation as it is.
How long will it be before most of the playable cards of rotation-ready sets get banned? At that point I ask, why even bother?
Addendum: Well there you go. It's supposedly fake.
Oh, good. I do think bans are appropriate, but not quite so extensive. Just balance a Fable ban with any hit to Esper Legends and the field should level a lot.
That's a shame, all those bans made perfect sense. I've advocated banning both atraxa and emperor from before they were even legal to play.
those may still be banned when the ban announcement comes
Unless it's a big, sweeping ban of some sort (like the fake one), I doubt it. Neither of those is in the biggest decks at the moment and any bans targeted at Rakdos and Grixis control will almost certainly hit reanimator in other ways, making an Atraxa ban a little excessive.

Yea but reminder though this atraxa is pretty close to working in decks similarity to Griselbrand which is why the first decks it was tested in was those goryo's vengeance decks

Heck, there was a Standard where Emrakul, the Aeons Torn was legal with all the crazy and possible way to cheat him out as fast and possible, and still wasn't banned. It was an era where even banning cards like Jace the Mind Sculptor was considered extreme and outrageous because "standard shouldn't ban cards." and those were effectively years where bans were extremely rare in that format.
I really miss those times.
True but it would be a start in the right direction.
A dozen bans would be much better. And more than likely closer to 20 could go for a healthier format. Of course they could have just stuck with rotation as well and they could use restrictions in place of outright bans on some cards. Standard is save-able but I don't think they really want to save it.

I guess you were a Caw-Blade player then. According to WOTC the attendance drops seen in that period were almost as bad as when the Urza Block sh*tshow. Due to power creep and poor testing (T3feri, Veil of Summer, anyone?) banning cards in Standard is more necessary now than in the past, even though less bannings sounds better in a vacuum.
Fable is getting the boot and Standard will be better off without it, I'd also love to see Invoke Despair go since only counterspells or Surge of Salvation can save you from it so good luck if your not playing Blue or White.
Atraxa was also a stupid design choice, that card belongs in Commander, not in a format with 60-card decks and multiple copies of the stuff you'd like to fetch with Atraxa, including herself so even if you kill the first Atraxa you can bet there's another coming up right away.
I'd give Reckoner Bankbuster a pass though, any deck can play it but not every deck wants it, and it's slow enough to keep its power in check.
Sheoldred is a fricking pain in the ass to play against so maybe they'll give her the boot because of that, even if she can be dealt with in many ways across all colors.
You guess completely wrong, not even had those cards at that time. my favorite deck was the eldrazi deck at the time, the ancestor of modern tron today. I'm just not a crybaby that can't handle power, and that's a philosophy I keep in every format I play now, from modern to EDH.
Seems that way, though Monored can put serious pressure on Esper, Lithomantic Barrageis hell on Esper, on top of all of the other burn cards to keep their creatures in check except her, of course. I'm a bit worried about Atraxa being in the format, even if there's no Fable to dig for her anymore. I suspect one of those two may still get the boot in August. I wouldn't have banned Bankbuster, but Fable and Invoke Despair had reaally overstayed her welcome, so good on WOTC.

When these announcements are made, are they typically Standard if not stated?

Griselbrand was in standard with Unburial Rites and Faithless Looting and didn't get banned.
