I assume the Ulgrotha legend is part of a team-up. Since Baron Sengir is the most famous legend Ulgrotha has, I believe he is the other legend.
Since they seem to prefer multi-colour team-ups, I assume it's either going to be Sengir and Autumn Willow or Sengir and Eron, whichever fits their colour needs best.
"A variant of a mechanic returns to a premier set for the first time since it originally appeared"
I wonder if they're reworking Amass. On Blogatog people have asked before about variants of it for non-zombie army creatures and Maro has said it'd probably be doable. Possibly a long shot, but Phyrexians and non-Phyrexians amassing armies is straight up what's happening.
There is no way the Phyrexians win. They won New Phyrexia, but I don't see how the story continues if they win Dominaria, especially with the other planes joining in the battle to save themselves too.
And Baron Singer has been redone in Modern Horizons 2. I feel that Maro would have counted that in coming up with his teaser. So maybe Autumn Willow.
“If the opponent protects it, remove a defense counter from it.”
So battles probably use defense counters and can be "protected"?
Does seem likely to be battles, yeah. This text kinda seems like a battle hate card also? It's the opponent protecting 'it', not text for your own battle or a battle support card. Unless battles create something for your opponent as like some kind of reward for you to try and take or something?
I think that might be the wording on the actual battle "If your offense succeeds, do X. If your opponent protects it, remove a defense counter from it."
I don't think a battle needs to give something to an opponent. It is my guess that they'll "protect" the battle just to keep you from gaining an advantage - inverse planeswalkers basically. The opponent doesn't get a reward from attacking your planeswalker except weakening your planeswalker. I suspect that battles will just be the same idea except your opponent blocks your creatures trying to "go into battle".
Is Baron Singer alive in cannon I could see him being the character returning from homelands. That’s if commander legends isnt counted as a return.
If the Baron and Autumn Willow team up, then that's still a legendary creature returning that we haven't seen since Homelands and alsoBaron Sengir returning.
No one else curious about this? I designed effectively transforming tokens for customs cards once, but used a different wording since I was not too happy about the wordiness of defining a front face and a back face in rues text. So I wonder whether the token will e created by a really wordy card or if it's going to be a pre-defined token like Treasure and Food.
Most likely it's just something like "a 2/2 Citizen creature token with 'Sacrifice an artifact: Transform this creature into a 4/4 Phyrexian artifact creature token.'"

Two draft archetypes that have a creature type matters component (one of which is Phyrexians - see above
What could the second be? Knights? Allies?
Let's combine the two and have the second creature type be Army! Though going by the story a new amass variant would create a Phyrexian Army anyway. The defenders seem less organized on most planes.

I mean, Maro said "A variant (of a mechanic) is returning", not that there is a new mechanic that's a variant of an existing one, which is how he always worded it in the past.
If he really means amass (which honestly makes plenty of sense, especially given the tribal theme) then shame on Maro, especially since he loves to play gotcha with precise wording all the time.
I'm pretty certain they are, but this one is probably Fblthp and Borborygmos.
The art we have of Fblthb does not really fit a team-up. And the Kylem duo is much more iconic than Borborygmos x Fblthb, so I'm actually inclined to believe it is infact the Kylem duo.

Phyrexian conversion creature is a good guess.
If battles are DFCs, maybe the token could be something to do with them. A token that interacts with them, a specific token battle, or a battle copy token.
Could also be something a little like day/night where you get like a macguffin artifact or enchantment that switches between modes of plane defenders vs phyrexians?

Unless (and I think this is what was ground suggested), it's "amass phyrexians" and the old one is being changed to "amass zombies"
That said, War of the Spark was not that long ago and that line seems like something said about a fairly old mechanic. It's not at all surprising that amass hasn't returned when it's only been 4 years.
Didn't see what is really needed. Something to remove poison counters or prevent poison counters (or both). It is flat out stupid that there basically is no way to do this. Hopefully its still coming just not hinted at.

Um I’m pretty sure the promo art is not part of the set they had art on the promo packs that don't appear in the set
Exhibit A I saw the midnight hunt version in person and none of the cards had art on that one.
Thinking back to the picture we had of the world tree and the roots/branches from Realmbreaker dissolving. I think this is the fire/flames Chandra and Wrenn are talking about in the story. I think Wrenn is the reason why those roots are disintegrating. Now if this is just slowing down Realmbreaker or totally destroying it... I don't know.
I just caught a mistake in my teaser. The variant of the mechanic did return once in a premier set. This is the second time it returned since it originally appeared. Sorry for the mistake.
so it’s the third time this mechanic appears…and you know what this may have also just unmasked what it is because there’s only one mechanic I know that appeared twice in a premier sets

dfc tokens would require rules change, no? under current rules tokens are not cards and comprules transform definition requires "cards" to work. but based on past weasel-wording by maro this could as well not be even remotely connected to actual transform mechanic but something completely different.

and Blake said more than 3 walkers but less than 10 flip walkers could easily do an amount like this.
and… it’s get even more likely if we go back to the wrenn teaser the realmbreaker/or her might flip into wrenn and eight (realmbreaker/the world tree)
Given that they made a planeswalker sparking an element of the story, I do think flipwalkers seem like a good guess, but there are plenty of other mechanics that fit the description. Ninjutsu, sunburst/converge, dredge (OK, it's probably not that), stun counters (probably too expected to clue), constellation, energy counters and you get the idea - there's a bunch.

Stun counters are evergreen
and It’s simple why the didn't appear in “all will be one”
In what world would it be a good idea to put stun counters in a set with proliferate as a mechanic
And by the way it mean it’s this mechanics third appearance in primer set (standard legal) that’s a variant of a another one like “megamorph” with “morph” flip-walkers is a variant of transform
besides wouldn't the lore be a bunch of people getting sparks to the phyrexians in a similar fashion to how elsepth got her spark

What worries me is the card that produces such a token. It would have to spell out what the token is, its characteristics, what triggers the transform and what are the characteristics of the other face. I'm guessing they will have to use the extremely-tiny-font tech on that one.

Unless this ties into a new keyworded mechanic that sits only in comp rules from day 1. I get that they haven't really done this but it could happen.

Oooh, looks like Eight is going to be better known as Realmbreaker. I don't think they'd go to all the trouble of a narrative buildup and not do that.
