Gandalf definitely has layers. And while I think there is an argument for green-white, as you say, checking the custom cards made for the character in the past certainly only seems to indicate one thing: Gandalf doesn't belong into black.
I think Gandalf should be partially white as self sacrifice for the greater good is part of white's philosophy. He was willing to die in order to save the fellowship from the balrog, and took Pippen to Gondor after he used the palantir to distract Sauron away from Frodo in Mordor.

I like this Gandalf. Works best as part of a group, does cool stuff with spells, then has to leave before he can come back to do it again. I've heard people kvetch about the need to pay for him again, but it's easily gotten around in several ways, since it's tailor-made to slip right into a flicker build. Jeskai, for example, could pull a ton of shenanigans with him.
