I dont think wizards should consider commander at all. One of the worst things to happen to commander imo is Arcane Signet. Took us from a 99 card (Sol Ring) format to 98.
Why does Wizards even care about the rules committee? I mean it's their game. Isn't the rules committee completely separate from Wizards?
Yes, Magic belongs to WOTC, and yes, the Rules Committee is separate from them. So why do they/should they care about the RC?
- The RC created and nurtured the most popular format in the game. True, it gained exposure when WOTC started producing product directly for it, but EDH was growing steadily long before it became Commander, and it has outperformed every format entirely under the control of WOTC since.
- The RC has maintained a fairly stable format that has avoided many of the pitfalls and dumpster fires of WOTC-run formats. I mean, how does the company who literally designs and prints cards for Standard keep screwing up Standard so bad, with record numbers of cards being banned and errataed?
- Taking over from the RC could create a rift among their customers. While a loud minority continue to hate on every move by the RC, the vast majority are happy enough with the format as is (hence it's popularity). Does WOTC really want to drive a wedge in that and risk doing to the Commander cash cow what they've done to D&D? (OK, maybe they are that dumb. Time will tell if they've learned anything from that fiasco.)
Let me reverse your question - why should you or WOTC not care about the RC? Do you really think they would run Commander even as well, let alone better, than the RC has?
Thanks for clearing it up. I'm just surprised a company like Wizards wouldn't want full control even if the committee have been doing a good job. A company like Games Workshop would have gone ballistic in a similar scenario. They "protect" their IP to a self damaging level. I could just see Wizards doing the same.

Well we did sort of see them do that exact thing recently with D&D. Will that do that with Magic? Probably.
Why would they want to pay someone to do work that is currently being done for free?
Looking at what happened with D&D, maybe now they want money from the RC

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.

See that's the problem. Wizards of the Coast is having the Rules Committee to do all the work for them when it comes to Commander where they feel as though they don't need to put in as much effort when it comes to quality control and marketing of Magic as a brand because they know it will sell and print money for them. If people are stupid enough not to boycott the game through buying directly from Wizards of the Coast via Secret Lairs and Amazon purchases over their Local Game Store (LGS) then they're just as much of the problem and not the solution. Printing proxies cost resources that players might not be able to afford and Wizards of the Coast is banking on their willingness to attain the real cards over the fake proxies for their decks.
