Magic's 30th Anniversary is kicking off today, and that includes some preview cards. This post will be updated during and after the show to present all the cards previewed during the show.
Here are all but one of the upcoming promos for prereleases commemorating the 30th anniversary of Magic. That last card represents 2022 and hasn't been seen yet.
Brothers' War
Phyrexia: All Will Be One
March of the Machine
The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth™
Wilds of Eldraine
Lost Caverns of Ixalan
Set Codename "Polo" (2024 release)
For those still grinding the Regional Championship Qualifier circuits, here are the promos for the last Pro Tour of 2023. Participating gets you Mystical Dispute, Top 8 gets Thing in the Ice, and the winner gets Snapcaster Mage.
The next set is Brothers' War. Here's the other brother, Mishra. Expect one more meld pair, but in green. (Gaea? Titiania? We'll have to see.)
Oh yeah, Dominaria Remastered. It's a Remastered set based on every set in Magic based in Dominaria. Here are a few more cards from that set. Included here is release promo Counterspell.
Here's a holiday Secret Lair. The 30th Anniversary Countdown Kit is a 30-card set, referencing cards across each year of Magic, done in as many old SL styles as they could get. Here's the thing: these 7 are the only ones that will be confirmed. The other 23 are sealed. Are you willing to gamble for that?
Finally, we have 30th Anniversary Edition. It's a 4-booster box of non-tournament legal cards based on Limited Edition Beta (not Alpha, it's missing Volcanic Island and has a messed-up collation system). Each pack contains 15 cards, 13 cards in the modern frame—1 rare, 3 uncommons, 7 commons, and 2 basic lands—plus one basic land in the retro frame, one additional retro frame card, and a token based on old art. There are no mythic rares, and no rarities have been shifted. These cards do, however, have modern wording and modern corners, and we've slightly touched up some of the art for a clearer, modern look.
Here's a couple of cards you'll see. Yes, each card has a retro version. Yes, the basics have that wording. Yes, that's the old ugly white mana symbol. And yes, that's a piece of the Power Nine. The catch? It's worth $999 for the 4-booster display, and it's a limited print run. WPN stores do get one for free, and Premium WPN stores get three. Here's everything. The onyl cards removed are Contract from Below, Darkpact, Demonic Attorney, Earthbind, Weakness and Crusade.
For more details, go here for 30th Anniversary Edition and here for everything else.
Just imagine going back to 2011-2015 and telling people that foil Tarmogoyfs would be given out as door prizes at a prerelease
The Secret Lair advent calendar thing seems really sweet, but $150 is a decent chunk of money. I suppose it's an okay rate when compared to other SL drops though, lol.
$1000 for 4 packs of a new Collectors Edition seems kinda excessive though. But heck, new official proxies for cubes sounds kinda cool!
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
As a huge fan of Futureshifts I'm not complaining, but damn is that Japanese Tarmogoyf jarring among those retro promos. (Seriously, though, can we one day do for Futureshifts what we're doing now with retro frames? Thanks in advance.)
Also, Mishra's a beast, and not even that hard to meld.

Chrome Mox is currently about 80, Necropotence is 30, Pod it 17, Elspeth is 12, Typhoon is 10, so thats 95% of the purchase price there. The rest would have to be 23 copies of Squire to not at least break even.

Ok now we’re never gonna hear the end of it that “wizards is greedy” people now.
they are changing $1,000 for 4 packs……of proxies (some what the return of gold border cards from the reserve list)
anyway let’s go over the other cards
Note worthy pre release promos Loyal Retainers that’s actually huge for people since that’s a $40+ card (sacristy reasons) Kor haven nice that’s about $15 so this could be useful for newer players Eternal witness this won’t be popular but I seriously prefer the newer arts of this card this became the best one yet in my opinion Chord of Calling wait seriously coming to “March” prerelease gets you a edh all star tutor? Sweet Tarmogoyf this is gonna be the end of tarmogoyf being expensive once and for all. And at the same time this is clearly the bait for people to do the lord of the rings set. Harvester of souls THAT ART!!!! Kalonian Hydra that’s a card you defintly need for counter related decks and $15 Path of ancestry this might be a popular and definitely and a blood bath in stores since tribal is pretty much the most played archetype in commander and now we got it in retro frame. Beast whisperer again…THAT ART!!!
play promo Thing in the ice that art is great on both sides that one might be popular
Brothers war.
dragon engine: that P/T is spooky since they are the size of buildings but on the other hand orginal dragon engine was a 1/3 and also…ANOTHER MECHANIC I DIDN'T PUT IN THE BINGO SHEET! Unearth is back! And I can guaranteed you there’s a lot more in the set.
Mishra: now people will be sad he lost blue in his colors but good news that attack trigger is just beyond psycho! It’s Gary but it counts attackers instead of black pimps
Mishra and dragon engine meld: that’s probably the easiest meld condition to date (brisela has to survive to end of turn) and he’s a duzy melded 3 choices for 6 amazing abilities (fun fact 5 of the choices are actual card effects)
1. Mind rot
2.lightning bolt
3. Combat damage trigger of Sword of Sinew and Steel (you chose only one)
4. Menace and trample part of Odric, Lunarch Marshal
5. One sided Golgari Charm (first choice)
6. This will probably be the least picked unless your deck is artifact matters (so anything in the set that makes atleast 2 powerstone tokens
green meld creature theory: I know Titania was in the war is she could be involved (but the tin-foil could be gaea)
Domnaria remastered
brids of paradise: wrong art we still rioting for a reprint of the 7th edition art of birds (but still needed a reprint though) Jester's cap that card is in my hidden gems list in Commander you can just get rid of the win conditions in commander decks with this. Time stretch what too you guys so long to reprint this card? Sneak attack always nice to see this reprinted and it’s doing the first art too. Swords to plowshares when this was shown in crimson vow this was my go to art from here on out and now we got a retro frame version of it. Tatyova, Benthic Druid old school players will be happy to see this one get retro treatment
There's a lot of good here followed by arguably the worst mistake in Magic history.
- Lots of great 30th anniversary promotional card picks here. Surprised Wizards was willing to include so many value cards among these.
- Decent pro-tour promo choices. A little underwhelming on the value side unless you get the Snapcaster though.
- Mishra looks solid - love that it has parallel play patterns to Urza (T3, T4, Meld).
- Dominaria Remastered looks great. Excited to pick up some full arts of some classics.
- May very well buy the SL - As many posters have already stated, much of the value is already there in what has been shown. Unless the remaining 23 cards are just absolute garbage, this seems like a good pickup.
- And finally....what?! What is this hot garbage final announcement? In my opinion, this is the pinnacle of WOTC greed and hypocrisy. I guess WOTC couldn't do a 30th anniversary without a representation of its own recurring role - giving the middle finger to its players. I sincerely hope the backlash to this product is severe enough to trigger a course correction.
I never say this and I am only ever going so say it once... but that $999 randomized pack is so much cash grab! And they are not even playable cards, and most are just plain bad cards!
Secret lair is good. Might get one if possible. Def worth it because.. playable cards.
Tons of cards again! Good times... the more cards and reprints the better I would say.
Phyrexian Dragon Engine is intriguing but kinda looks like it suffers from the Tenacious Underdog problem: to a certain extent, you'd rather dump it into the graveyard than actually hardcast it from your hand. Not quite sure how much it ends up competing with Ox of Agonas in Modern (although Dredge would much rather have the Ox, not all decks can handle that Escape cost).
"To celebrate 30 years of Magic the Gathering we knew we had to go big, but Elaine, just how big did we go?"
"1000 dollars for 4 packs big." would have been the proper answer.
And no, Wizards is never going to live this one down, haha.
"We created something new that lets fans and collectors really experience some of the most iconic elements of Magic's early years." My god they're trying to talk it up so bad. Honey, it's whalebait. It's not some special 'experience'. Unless the experience is being filthy rich lmao.
I am actually super stoked for the modern frame dual lands and Timetwister for EDH, problem is they'll cost a fortune even as EDH proxies. I'm sure nobody will go to other means to get their proxies *cough*
It's unfortunate about the secret lair being limited. I'd be willing to bet the speculator bot farms will hit it so hard, it will go from "coming soon" straight to "sold out" without it ever being "available" for normal folk to have a chance at it.
The catch? It's worth $999 for the 4-booster display
Not sure I would use the word "worth" - it may be priced for that much, but it sure isn't worth it. It cost them just as much to print those as a standard booster, and these proxies aren't even legal for play.
Ok now we’re never gonna hear the end of it that “wizards is greedy” people now.
Ok now we’re never gonna hear the end of it that “wizards is greedy” people nowfrom the people who have undeniably been proven right. Fixed that for you.
I get that WOTC is a business and the purpose of a business is to make money. I have no issue with that. But $1,000 for 60 randomized proxies?! There is no justification for that.

Plus, this set is supposed to be made up of cards that did well in tournaments; not sure of the exact wording but pretty sure it was worded to not be EXACTLY "tournament-winning decks" just to give them some wiggle room. Though it will be interesting to see what card they reprint for the year thay Cawblade was wreaking havoc in Standard. I feel like smart money is on JtMS but watch it be a Squadron Hawk just because they don't want to put TOO much value in this thing.
Edit: the EXACT words, from the article are:

WOTC might be a business, but they have obviously forgotten how to do good business.
We bought legal cards and sealed product because we wanted to support the IP and the community that came with it, all WOTC had to do to keep us happy was reprint needed/wanted cards so that they were reasonable to get. Instead they double down on raising barriers to block us off from them. Both the full art lands and the List were fantastic ideas for rewarding us for cracking packs, but instead they filled the List with chaff and only about a quarter of packs have a full art.

$150 is obnoxious…however we already have the value from all the cards but bloodbraid elf and Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh (particuarlly chrome mox and necropotence both together makes around $110 the other 3 is around $10-$15)

Anyways, I'm not even mad anymore, I'm not buying the stuff, it's way too expensive
